The current rumor is that we'll see the teaser trailer with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor on August 1, 2008. It's been said NBC Universal paid good money to Warner Brothers so the trailer can accompany this film.

"Fuller" teaser trailer coming next week on satellite Tuesday night and Wednesday morning (probably same deal as the Terminator teaser where it'll be online about the same time) ...

I really hope Yates hits this one out of the park. Otherwise, the franchise may be doomed for me. The more I think about it, the more I dislike Order of the Phoenix.

Brilliant casting Ralph's nephew for the young Voldemort. Not exactly as I'd pictured the Riddle boy, but suitably dark and unsettling. The facial resemblance to Ralph Fiennes is uncanny, too.
Can't wait for the trailer tonight!

I saw the QuickTime 720p trailer and it does look great, though the "look" was darker than what I imagined when I read the book.

I think a big part of that is the footage showcased in the trailer. You've got the memories into Voldemort's past, which are supposed to be dark and nightmarish. You've got a climactic moment from near the end in an intrinsically dark place. And you've got Harry and Ginny being hunted at night in tall, swampy marshes in what I can only presume is a new sequence invented for the film. All of these are among the darkest the story has to offer.

The opening shot of the Hogwarts Express is beautiful and bright, even though the terrain is desolate. The scenes in Dumbledore's study, despite being lit entirely by the monochromatic memory vials, are also saturated. The shot of Harry holding Ron, Dumbledore with a very important ring, and the circle of fire are all vibrant looking.

It's definitely a different look than any of the previous five films, and not the return to technicolor splendor that I was hoping for. But it's something different, which is more than can be said for Order of the Phoenix.

This is also probably the first Harry Potter trailer that's told a story. The sparing use of shots from other parts of the movie visually reenforce what Dumbledore and Riddle are talking about. That expresses a narrative confidence that none of the other films have had.

Yates has burned me before, but that trailer has me excited -- surprisingly so.

I love the dates on the different vials, how they're labeled differently, some with just years, some specific days, some as Thomas Riddle and one as Thomas Marvolo Riddle, and others that just say Riddle.

And some have runes, like an interesting one with a triangle on it.

Yes, I thought it looks different too and I mean literally the look, not the mood or the camera work! At least for this trailer the image is heavily processed, like they used exotic digital filters.

That's what struck me the most- for the most part it eschews the standard of showing a lot of bombastic clips from all over the movie and instead on presenting the primary plot thread from the book. I'd say it was a brave move making a trailer largely absent of the title character, but when it's pretty much guaranteed to gross almost a billion dollars anyway, Warner's can take chances in their trailers.

I expect that should they make a trailer highlighting the happenings at "present day" Hogwarts then it will be significantly lighter in tone.

A lot of people thought they were just going to skip a teaser and go straight to a full theatrical trailer since were only four months out from the picture. Judging by this trailer, that's obviously not the case.

I agree with you Kevin that the full trailer will probably focus on the teenage romance at Hogwarts instead, which will probably feature brighter cinematography. I can already tell that some HTF diehards are going to hate this movie on DvD and Blue-Ray, because Bruno Delbonnel seems to be going for a really grainy look on the picture. The blacks also drop off like a rock, but it's hard to say whether that's due to the film's look or the MPEG4 compression on the video itself.

I guess it kind of makes sense given the success of OotP and TDK in that mid-July slot but I can't imagine the difference will be that big. It's a $300 million film give or take $20 million whether released in November or July.

I can't help but wonder if there are some sort of production difficulties/reshoots involved. Either way, I imagine that Warners has been considering the move for quite some time considering how delayed the advertising has been compared to the previous movies.

Well, that blows. Other than the prestige pics, this was the movie I was looking forward to the most this winter. Not only that, I was looking forward to Harry Potter in winter again. It just feels right.

Those TDK dollars and the fairly weak 2009 summer allow this to make sense. Kind of a bummer. But it does compute. Though I prefer HP in the fall.

See I'm not sure it really does compute. The series is remarkably consistent financially and I don't see them suddenly doing $400 million just because it was released in a weak summer. Especially since it doesn't have the final book synergy that OotP had. If anything I think it will gross less than it would have in the winter.

Dang it, that does blow and I agree that it feels right in the Winter. I just recently watched the movies again in building anticipation of this. Boo!!!

The DVDs for the holidays is an excellent point and may be what's motivating them on this issue.

What an assinine decision. There is NO competition this fall. It's a dead season. It's going to get pummeled next summer, without a book to buoy it like Order of Phoenix was.

Some are saying WB's summer '09 schedule may be undergoing a big shakeup because some of the work isn't looking like it will be ready, so they wanted a tentpole in the summer. They say the writer strike bumped some productions from the '09 cycle. Not sure I buy that.

I think the enormous furor from Harry Potter fans may force Warner Brothers' parent company, Time Warner, to reverse their decision within a few days. I wouldn't be surprised if Time Warner ends up with an Easter week release in 2009 at minimum or does an early December 2008 release.

This is definitely a response to how well The Dark Knight did this summer. Hell, it's the EXACT same release date. Personally, if it gives the filmmakers even more time to make the film just right.. then I'm all for it.
