Nintendo has announced they have quadrupled production that was planned for the remainder of the year, however... that's still apparently not close to enough. Nintendo had originally made a commitment for 15 Million units by years end, but market analysts believe demand may be closer to 20-25 Million units, leaving a significant short fall. Impacting that is also "repeat buyers" people who have purchased multiple-Wii or say they are giving Wii as a gift after owning one.
In short: despite production, Nintendo's partners (chip makers, etc.) were not prepared for volume. In kind of a suck for Nintendo, the ATI-AMD merger (ATI helps handle design and did help with Fab of the Wii-Revolution chip) has now been totally turned over to SiS in order to keep up with volume requests. In the longterm, this helps Nintendo, but the short term switchover doesn't help. Other part manufacturers simply underestimated Nintendo's Wii, and many said they believed Nintendo's original commitment to around 9M units previously was "high" and now tasked with 15 (and more) they are struggling to devote production lines.
