CONFIRMED: Alien films coming in 2010 to Blu-ray - Page 8

^ I would imagine that Cameron is trying to get across to the masses that he feels the picture looks great rather than using terms or descriptions that no one outside of HT forums care about.

But... But... We're the people who really matter!

Sure, because consumers decide the merit of a product, not sellers (or "industry insiders").

I've noticed that the UK blu-ray ALIEN set is going for $57+, whereas the US set is "on sale" for $97. Anyone know what the deal is with that? I have the Sherwood bdp-5004 and am thinking of saving the $40 with the UK set -- unless there's going to be something different about the sets (content or transfer-wise).

UK set: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alien-Anthology-Blu-ray-Sigourney-Weaver/dp/B003AQBYUG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1283038380&sr=8-1

US set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AQO3QA/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=04A594HY472TMWSPXMGW&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

It seems to be a trend the US producers believe US consumers should pay more.

I talked to Bill Hunt and he says that people are overreacting big time to these Cameron comments.  Every industry source he has talked to says Aliens looks fantastic.

Yeah. Like as if they would say anything else.

Bill Hunt: "Hey, did you see Cameron's new cleansed version of Aliens?"

Industry source: Yeah.

Bill Hunt: "What did you think of it?"

Industry source: I think it looks like ass. Cameron screwed the pooch.

Seriously, the same "industry sources", if asked, would probably say that the Ultimate Predator BD looks fantastic. It's what they are paid to say. I'm not saying that Cameron's supervised clean-up of his films won't look perfectly fine, but the statements of "industry sources" should be taken for what they are: biased promotion.

Um, no. The term "industry sources" would generally refer to someone with inside access,  who's ANNONOMOUSLY sharing their true opinions. That's why they're called "industry sources" and not Dave Dipshit @ 20th Century Fox.

The example conversation you give is actually quite apt.

Aliens08.jpgScreenshots of Alien and Aliens have been released at the Home Cinema Choice website, and they're looking good.  Very good.  What a relief.  But it also makes me angry about the stuff that wasn't done right.

Now, c'mon is anyone here surprised by the Aliens screenshots, was anyone seriously doubting Cameron

He may come across as a jerk in interviews but god damn, he knows his shit.

Well, I'm satisfied!

To what are you referring, exactly?

Predator is a pretty good example of it done wrong, horribly horribly wrong.

And Patton.  When I think of how it could have looked...

I thought the original poster was referring to Alien-specific things that were done wrong, not other titles altogether.

As for these screencaps... WOW!!!!!

Here's an Alien screenshot:

The caps look great!

Your first link is only going to the main page at DVD Beaver.

I copied and pasted Rickard's link and it worked, it showed a screen cap from Alien. What I am not clear on is what I'm looking at. I believe the DVD Beaver cap is the DVD and the second link is the BD. The BD is cropped a little closer then the DVD. So I think Rickard's question is which is the proper framing.

The BD is also slightly cropped compared to the DVHS:

So two out of three says the BD is cropped.  I'm not worried about it, though.

I'll hold out hope that someone else is going on with the screen caps from the BD.  Otherwise, ugh...

Correct. The first screen cap is from the first R1 SD DVD and the second from the upcoming BD as shown on the home cinema choice site.

And yes, I do wonder what the correct framing is. It is kind of confusing, the first R1 and R2,R4 SD "Legacy" look the same in terms of framing but the later R1 SD "Quadroligy" looks cropped and quite a lot like the new BD capture's framing.

Look at the DVD caps at http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare2/alien.htm and the BD caps http://hcc.techradar.com/playback/coming-soon/blu-ray-screenshot-gallery-alien-anthology-alien-06-09-10.

Edit: For those who had trouble with the links, I made a rough illustration of the BD framing according to the screen cap.

Are those two screenshots from the exact same frame?  Is the camera moving during that shot?

That is odd. I took this shot from the Quadrilogy set a few years ago. I have both region 1 and 2 sets but can't remember which one I used for capture.

I'm looking at the dark edge of the cover to Kane's cryo freezer and it's not in the exact same place in both screen caps.  All of the other reference points on the freezers look the same though, so maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me...

Not sure about the exact frame but I had a look at my Quad copy and the camera is not moving at this point and the scene fades almost immediately after this.

I have the R1 Quad set and the framing there is similar to the BD cap at home cinema choice.

When the Director's Cut was released theatrically, I remember watching for the framing of this scene because of the cropping I had seen at dvdbeaver but I can't recall how it looked...

Regarding Aliens... the caps look a lot better!

The BD is sometimes reframed. In this scene, it shows more information at the bottom and less information at the top. In others, it might be the other way around.

First Legacy, then Quad and lastly BD.

Here are more comparisons...

Aliens http://www.zonadvd.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=1143

Alien http://www.zonadvd.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=1142

Edit: a note of caution: the BD caps for Aliens seems to have levels between 0-255 but the dvd caps seem to have video levels 16-235

which is why there is such difference. But the Alien caps seem to have the same levels.
