EMA Sneak Peek: Meeting with Universal's Ken Graffeo - Page 4

Re: EMA Sneak Peek: Meeting with Universal's Ken Graffeo

I don't know if it's too late to get in on questions you plan to foward, but if not, can you please mention whether Hercules and Xena TV shows from the 90's are ever gonna make their way to the hi-def formats?

The Xena Season 1 on DVD in particular looks quite nasty, with obvious compression artifacts...

Thanks.

These shows (and most tv shows from the 90s) were edited and effects done in NTSC resolution. Its unlikely they will ever make it to HD. It would require re scanning all the footage at HD resolution, re editing each episode from scratch, and re creating all of the effects shots.

Fair point.

It was pretty cool to see how these features have progressed over the last year.

No problem whatsoever. With my "sneak peek"-comment, I was just making a point that if the time is short, then at least I would rather choose discussion/Q&A over sneak peeks.

Re: EMA Sneak Peek: Meeting with Universal's Ken Graffeo

Just finished watching all 7 videos from the EMA HD DVD debate. There's a link at the top of the software page I think. Bigtime kudos to Adam for moderating and keeping the panel/members focused. Excellent job.

The other comments I want to make are regarding Ken Graffeo from Universal and Kevin Collins from Microsoft. After watching them and listening I am now a bigger fan of these guys. Sure, they work for MAJOR corporations but these guys are film fans too. These people are not what we paint them to be or need for them to be. Do they want to make money? Yep...Lots of it? Yep....is that a bad thing? Nope.

My only gripe with the videos is wishing they were longer. I could have watched and listened all day. Good stuff.

Watching these made me regret my decision to not attend even more. Dangit!!!! ARRRRGGHHH.

Check out the videos and pics if you haven't.

Again, good job HTF!

Universal still hasn't announced any October titles. As we know, the final three months are the most important of the year, so I know, or rather HOPE that Graffeo and others realize that this final quarter could make or break HD-DVD in the minds of retailers & CE manufacturer's. Personally, I think we will get a few title surprises from them. It's possible that they didn't want to announce or discuss them at the EMA at this time......

At least I hope this is the case.

Maybe in December we'll see a Twenty fourth Anniversary HD-DVD edition of Scarface? As much as I'd like that, it'd make more sense to do it next December.

Re: EMA Sneak Peek: Meeting with Universal's Ken Graffeo

It was just announced that Close Encounter is being released by Sony in November on BD.

So much for the theory that there would be greater market penetration before his films would be released in HD.

What excuse the Uni have now?

Re: EMA Sneak Peek: Meeting with Universal's Ken Graffeo

That Sony owns Close Encounters outright while Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment has an ownership stake in his later productions?

I don't think they need another excuse, That is their reason. Stephen S. doesn't want them released yet. It's pretty safe to say if they had his blessing they would be out now.

Re: EMA Sneak Peek: Meeting with Universal's Ken Graffeo

Personally my MOST sought after Universal title for HD DVD is Phantasm II.

A snow ball's chance in hell...I know, but holy hell I would FLIP for that in HD.

Re: EMA Sneak Peek: Meeting with Universal's Ken Graffeo

There are 3 versions of CE3K (including the 2001 final director's cut which Spielberg no DOUBT has say over) with all new documentary and new interview with Spielberg with exclusives also on for the BD.
Hardly a case of "Sony can do what they want with the title..." in this instance...

I think it might have been a case of Sony was going to release it anyway so he might as well participate. Universal tends to be more deferential to Spielberg.
