Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

Loved the soldiers comment I don't know what it is, but it's winning. I'm excited about this one. Not far off either.

Here is a slow mo of the monster from the last trailer:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
did anybody else catch the girl behind the curtian that looked like she was going to explode??

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

I see, I'd clicked on the Teaser instead of the new preview.

Yeah, it looked like she was being pulled at each arm by two large squirrels, or Picachus. Or, maybe things wearing cloaks. Hard to tell since it was just their shadows. Bulky, whatever they were. Or it could be misdirection and she may just be between two people in biohazard suits. Probably not that lucky though -- this looks like the kind of film where everyone will perish.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

I'm glad that this movie isn't an M. Night Shamalan film or the monster wouldn't REALLY be a monster but a bunch of the locals all piled on top of each other wearing a corny ass monster suit.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

Pretty sure the silhouettes pulling the girl are guys in hazmat suits.

Anyone have a direct link for the trailer? Getting tired of waiting for them to load from Apple's site.

I had the same thought. It was bad on my laptop screen. It is hard to imagine it on the big screen. If it is like that throughout, it might be hard to handle.

I hope the movie ends up being as good as the trailers. Some movies make better trailers than movies.

That's what it looks like to me, but they look like they were pounding on her. The one on the right looked like he gave her a good one.

Got home on my computer and finally saw the picture. That was great. Maybe better as a spoiler though.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

There's a preview of the opening scene out -- mostly stuff from the trailer only longer. I have doubts about being able to keep track of characters when they never stay on screen for more than three fames.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

Abrams intends this film and the monster to be a surprise and for once i'm going to allow it, I choose not to see the monster or read any reviews until I see the film.

Too often these days the internet ruins the surprise of films, could you imagine seeing what the T-Rex looked like months or weeks before actually seeing it in Jurassic Park?

It's like with Transformers last summer, I already knew what Optimus Prime looked like before seeing the film and thus it took a little out of seeing him in the film and being surprised.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

Cloverfield opens Jan 18 -- is it pre-destined to be a stinker? It seems that the lousy movies are dumped in the trashbin of Jan and Feb release dates.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

Perhaps, they wish to change the month's perception?

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

If they were just dumping the movie out in January because it was bad, they wouldn't have put so much hype and ad money into it. They would have just started running TV ads in early January and hoped for the best.

Releasing it in January will probably end up being a very good move. The majority of its competition will be movies that have been out for weeks by January 18. Just the 'secrecy' of the movie and its ad campaign guarantee a big opening but if it's good, they'll make even more money because it will have very little competition.

Normally, but not always - wasn't Silence of the Lambs a February release?

While January is typically the dumping-ground for films, that is not what this feels like. Studios seem to try to slip their films out in January without people noticing, where the first trailer for Cloverfield was actually highlighting the release date over the film title. Right from the start this was a film that was always intended to be released in January. And January dumping-ground titles tend to be unsuccessful comedies or damas, not big monster movies. This is more like a big summer release, but with a few elements (like the handicam filming) that might make it a bit of an uncertainty when compared to the other big summer releases. But release it in January, where the only competition is either an Oscar-seeking film or some badly-madecomedy, and Cloverfield could do well in cornering the market of people that just want to see a fun film.

[EDIT: I see Travis has made the exact same point I was making. I guess that's what happens when you go and have lunch halfway through typing your reply.]

I hope that's the case, that this is actually smart planning to put a good movie in a time normally filled with dreck.

Some reviews are up from some private screening at Aint It Cool. Interesting spoiler also. Definetly all over this one.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

I will want to see the trailer that will be attached to this film for the Abrams directed version of Star Trek. Cloverfield looks interesting, wondering what the conceit is.

Isn't it too early for a trailer? There may be a teaser with a few quick shots of the cast, the name of the movie and the theme song but I wouldn't think there'd be any more than that.

From what I understand, the Star Trek trailer is a teaser. Someone has already seen it and was pretty impressed by the content in that it got him really excited about the project. And this person was a film director or some such similar capacity.

The ST trailer supposedly has some shots of the Enterprise too - in drydock I believe.

The Russian trailer is out -

VIDEO: Cloverfield - Russian Trailer

Harry Knowles has seen Cloverfield, I think he mentions in his review that he still isn't entirely sure what the creature looks like which doesn't bode well. Thanks to the wonders of shakycam we might not get a good look at the monster, I mean I got dizzy just looking at that 2min trailer.

However, he did say the movie's very "unconventional" feel is part of its charm, and because of that he really liked the film. Think of it as the Blair Witch Project done on a more expensive scale.

I was on the verge of motion sickness at the last Bourne movie, I did not enjoy that style at all. I hope this movie is not like that. If we never get a good look at the monster, it will put more pressure on the rest of the movie to be good to be successful. Jeez, if you've got a monster, flaunt it.

I noticed in the Little Rock paper this morning, there will be a 12:01 AM showing Friday morning. There will be a free Kodak camera "as supplies last."

Yeah, me too. I'm going to be anxious to find out how much of this is "shakycam". If it's in the Paul Greengrass - or Blair Witch - mode, I'll have to wait for the DVD. I can't watch that stuff on the big screen...

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

I hope they don't show the creature clearly, for some strange reason i'm compelled NOT to know what this thing looks like, go figure. I think it's because I don't want the mysterious lure of the trailer ruined just yet, like the creature won't live up to what i've already imagined in my mind.

I don't know.
