Not showing the monster worked well on Lost for quite a while.

o.t.
Friday morning?

i know it is technically the next day when midnight hits but do you really say tomorrow morning when you refer to one minute after midnight, when talking to someone?

really, if you said to someone you were going to see this, let's say tonight at the midnight show, you would say "i'm seeing this tomorrow." ?

back on topic, if i have a thursday midnight show, i'll try to get out to see it.

Harry Knowles has seen Cloverfield, I think he mentions in his review that he still isn't entirely sure what the creature looks like which doesn't bode well. Thanks to the wonders of shakycam we might not get a good look at the monster, I mean I got dizzy just looking at that 2min trailer.
So, having read your comment, I braved AICN to read Harry's review. And I'm not sure you're accurately describing what he says. What he actually says is:

It doesn’t look like any iteration of GODZILLA that we’ve ever seen. It is enormous. And even though I’ve seen it… I am hard-pressed to come up with a comparative creation. You know that big fucking thing in THE MIST? It isn’t that. Is the creature a biped? I’m not sure, I think it might’ve been a four-legged beastie… it has a tail, it has teeth and freaky eyes like that horse that died in ANIMAL HOUSE. It’s kinda of a grayish-yellowish-off-white looking thing. But more important than the creature is what this fucker does. He basically goes bug-nuts.
He's not saying that we never get a clear look at it. He seems to be saying just thaqt it's difficult to describe to people nthat haven't seen it. The only part of his review that even suggests lack of clarity is his line about being unsure whether it is a biped - and that could easily be because they never really see the monster moving, rather than because we never actually see the creature.

Except people aren't watching "Lost" specifically to see the monster. While people are going to "Cloverfield" mainly to see the monster.

I agree with this guy to a degree. I would like to see a monster movie in which they created something that could exist. By that I mean, something scientifically plausable, something that could have evolved, something that a scientist would say "yeah, something like that could have evolved." I don't agree with him to the extent that I would criticize this movie for not being that. I like fictional, can exist only in a movie, monsters as much as the next guy.

I read the entire Knowles review. I've never read his stuff before and his writing doesn't exactly impress me. The movie is "found footage", so while he didn't make this clear, we can expect some shakiness in the picture and when I go see it Friday, I will sit far, far from the screen if I can.

I saw Charlie Wilson's War yesterday (liked it very much) and the preview for Cloverfield mentioned they will be giving away one-time use Kodak cameras at the Friday morning (yeah, I'm referring to 12:01 am) showing. Not enough incentive for me to be awake at that hour.

I am glad we get to see the monster enough for there to be drawing of it. Most of the good monster movies will hide the creature for a while, but eventually reveal it. Even the first Alien, eventually gave you a decent look at it. The only scary movie that comes to mind that never shows anything is Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the original The Haunting

Well...yea! Hopefully... but people go to see these pictures first and foremost to see the creature. Whether it be a shark or a dinosaur or an alien. If the story and actors and not least of all the monster deliver... then you've really got something; A Jaws or Jurassic Park or Alien. If the story doesn't deliver then you hope the monster is at least cool to sustain interest.

Re: JJ Abrams-produced Monster movie (Codename: Cloverfield)

Aside from being "entertaining", why do people listen to anything Harry Knowles and the AICN people have to say?

I haven't for the life of me figured that out for like, years now.

That's the beauty, Todd, you can make up on your own what the creature was and where it came from.

Why do the majority of audience want everything spelled out for them, this is why we get so much watered down mindless junk from Hollywood these days. This is why we got a happy ending to I Am Legend. I love movies that leave a little bit to the imagination. If you were at this party you would have time to go to a computer and research were this thing came from. When the world comes crashing down you have to just start running. Even the media covering the story wouldn't know anything about it, which they showed in the movie briefly. It would take weeks if not longer for the details about something an event like this to come to light and the movie is just not that long. They captured the panic and nightmare feeling perfectly. They would have had to break the POV rule of the film to give us more details which would have ruined the flow and feel of the entire movie.

I loved Cloverfield, I've never had an 84 minute movie wear me out so much. It was great and a lot of fun.

Does anyone know if that track will be released in some form or fashion? iTunes, perhaps? If so, when? Thanks!
I agree, it was a great suite. Had a very old movie style feel to it, in fact I thought they may had dug up some old monster movie's suite and used it until Giacchino's credit rolled by. Over at the moviemusic.com forums the rumor is that Giacchino is working on getting the track released somehow. The uncut version is 12 minutes long and he used an 87 piece orchestra to record it. I can't wait to hear his score for the upcoming Star Trek movie (which by the way, the teaser was great too).
