Networking Issue

Thread Starter
I have been using 4 computers connected with wires and a 5th connected wirelessly to a Linksys router. Everything has been working fine. Today I had to mess with it. Instead of having both a desktop and laptop in the kitchen, I wanted to move the desktop down to the basement office. I also wanted to bring the router up out of the garage into the living room to get a better signal, so I bought a Linksys workgroup switch. All the rooms are wired to a central location in the garage. My internet is provided through a gateway in my living room. Here is the how they are connected:
  • The phone company supplies the DSL to the gateway in the living room.
  • From the gateway I have one wire going to the router in the living room. This way I can use its firewall and I have good signal strength.
  • A wire goes from the router to the switch in the garage.
  • All the computers are wired into the switch.
Now the issue; the computer that was moved is getting an intermittent connection. All the other computers are happy. This started after I installed the switch and before I moved it. I moved it anyway, and the problem moved with it. It is cycling between having a connection for about a minute and not having a connection. I tried another patch cable - didn't work. I tried un-installing and re-installing the network card - didn't work. I tried the network wizard - didn't work. I can think of only 2 other reasons:
  1. The computer is unhappy that it got moved to the basement. It is jealous of the new laptop so it is acting up.
  2. I might have given it a static IP address years ago. Would adding the switch effect this?
I tried to run ipconfig, but the dos screen just flashes up for a second and then goes away. What are your thoughts? Does it need a little TLC or is there another issue?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Networking Issue

You have to open up a command prompt window by typing "cmd" in the run line, and then type "ipconfig" in the black DOS window if you want to read what it says.
