New member spamming with PM's?

I just got this message from a new member named "turing2" and it was nothing more than spam for his Buddhism website.

Did anyone else receive one as well?

If so, this takes spamming to a new low, doesn't it?

Yup I received it as well, he signed up yesterday and has no posts. I did not reply of course.

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

Yeah, I never get PM and there it was. This site is good about not letting anyone in but it has happened to me twice in two years. I'll bet we get way more responses on this.

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

You should not be receiving any further PMs from this member.

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

I didn't even know you could send one PM en masse like that. I thought the 5 messages thing was just that - messages, not 5 users. Even then, to choose specific names, too.

All that effort involved makes me question the sanity and/or amount of free time someone like that has. I mean forget the fact that it's annoying, it's just really weird.

I got it too, and came to this part of the forum right away. Glad to see other members were already on this.

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

You guys realize that we can't forsee members that sign up
for the purpose of spamming, but if you keep reporting names
to us as it happens, I think we can guarantee that we will remove
those individuals pretty damn fast.

Thanks for the help.

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

I also got the "spam" from turing2 on 6/29. Sad to hear it was a bit widespread, but glad to see it was dealt with efficiently.

This is the first I've heard of PM spam. Hopefully it doesn't become pervasive. I imagine this would be a toughie to deal with.

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

The situation will get much worse before it gets better.

I personally handle the signups to this forum. You would not
believe the amount of "fly by night" telecom companies that I
catch trying to register here on a daily basis. Additionally, there
are just as many start-up companies that register here that you
can just tell are looking to use this forum to promote their business.

Fortunately, most of them are stopped at signup. If not, our spam
filter usually catches their posts and puts it in a "holding area" so we
can delete it before it gets broadcast on the forum.

The Moderating staff monitors our spam filters daily, and so far, it's
very rare that this forum falls victim to spam. However, I can see
spammers becoming a lot more "aggressive" than they ever have and
my fear is that it's going to be harder to keep them out.

We appreciate you guys helping us out on this front.

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

To put forth the effort of signing up, choosing specific members to message, and so on makes this seem like an isolated case, because it had nothing to do with selling any products, just promoting buddhism.

Not an excuse by any means, just an observation.

I was made an administrator of a small forum just so I could delete all the would-be spammers that register, so I can appreciate the time you all take to preserve the quality and integrity of this place.

Cheers to you

Re: New member spamming with PM's?

A-ha! I'm glad my friend suggested I do a search here as I got the message as well and it was a WTF moment for me. Who is this guy and why is he contacting me?

It was SPAM afterall. But for me, he said he wanted to say hello, though his signature was a quote from Albert Einstein about Buddism.

Yes, I'll also say cheers to the admins here for doing this increasingly difficult job of filtering.
