Saturday Night Fever on HD! (Just don't touch my hair)

Thread Starter
Nice to see a little blurb on The Digital Bits that Paramount
is planning a HD-DVD and BLU-RAY release of one of my top 10
favorite films of all-time.

Never expected this to be out so soon on either HD format, but I
am certainly excited.

Paramount has set a September 18 bow for the film's high-def debut on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.
Though no specs have yet been announced, the next-gen versions will debut simultaneously with a new 30th Anniversary Edition on standard-def DVD, so we can only hope for a wealth of new bonus content.
Paramount has set a retail price of $29.95 for both versions.

Also thought I read somewhere (Can't find the blurb) that it would be released with TrueHD. I if can locate the specs, I will post it.

Not a big fan myself but I'm happy for you Ron.

I'll be picking this up, but I'm disappointed they didn't kick out Grease first.

Was the video on the re-released DVD of Grease actually any better?

BTW, does anyone else think the cover art for SNF is hysterical? Is that a disco ball or the Death Star?

I've seen a few reviews that said it was an improvment, but I never bothered picking it up.

Re: Saturday Night Fever on HD! (Just don't touch my hair)

I share your enthusiasm for this film, Ron.
It's funny how over the years the perception of this film by many is that it's a cheesy, campy fun film with groovy music when it's pretty far from that.
My fiancee went to a screening of this at her college and everyone dressed in crazy 70's gear hoping for a kind of a Rocky Horror Picture Show type of experience (to be fair many hadn't seen it at all or hadn't seen it in years...)
The screening began well enough with the "strut" scene and everyone was having a ball but as the film progressed the audience realized that it's a pretty heavy and at time quite dark character study of some very politically incorrect, ignorant and at times outight repulsive behavior. (I wouldn't have it any other way, btw and doubt it would even be made today the same way, the cast would all be WB pretty boys and girls badly attempting New York accents, Bobby would have lived and Tony would have wound up with Annette...)
By the end of the film the crowd realized that the film wasn't the cheesy nostalgic campy film they had thought (or remembered) it to be.
One of the best films of the 70's and one of my faves.

love this movie. Can't wait for it in HD.

I hope this gets GREASE here sooner... that film REALLY needs a new HD transfer... big time!

Oh... and LOSSLESS AUDIO... Please Paramount... PLEASE.

Nice to see you here, as well Ron!

Agree, lossless or death!
If the sound doesn't kill the CD, its not HD!

Here's hoping they can finally get the trademark infringement issue with Coca-Cola resolved for 'Grease' so we don't get blurred backgrounds in the malt shop scenes anymore.

I'm really looking forward to the HD DVD release, myself. This is a favorite of mine and of course, I'll be upgrading!

Speaking of Digital Bits:
When I try to open their website I get "Guadalajara Youth Rescue".
Does anyone know what is going on?
Thanks

Re: Saturday Night Fever on HD! (Just don't touch my hair)

I'm looking forward to this.

I think the blurred Coke signs in Grease may have been cut into the negative, but I wouldn't confirm it.

What really needs to be done with Grease is the inclusion of the original sound mix, or at least a competent attempt at remixing. The 1998 mix is an abomination that screams of "we had 2 weeks to do something that would have taken 6 months to do properly". And include the original Paramount logo and the custom fanfare that came with it.

And its a pretty good sounding CD, at that. I know most will be happy if it sounds better than the SD DVD. Just, I want it to sound: better than ever!
I liked in your "Sleeping Beauty" review where you compare the SD DVD to the LD. I think EVERY HD Disc reviewer should have to compare the sound to the SD DVD. Some don't even do it even if its a dreaded combo. Lazy! If possible the D-VHS & LD, as well.
This is our hard-earned bucks were talking about here. I wanted to get "H&F" & "DG", yet there is no way if the sound isn't amazing.

Mack Daddy,
Next time I'm in Berkeley, I'll have to drop you off a bumper sticker!!! ;-)

Oh wait! Your in "Berkeley"!! You don't have "cars"!!!

It was like that for me (and a few others in another thread) on Saturday but it was only for a few hours that day and is working now.

Do you have to drive it to the city limits and walk into town? :-0
Or, is it parked by the bay, w/all the other vans??? ;-)

EDitEDbyED:
Well at least a bumper sticker will look good on it!

Hey, back on top ick, does Amoeba have "SNF" on HD Disc yet??? :-)

An HTF member made me a comparison-DVD where we could toggle between the 5.1 from the new DVD and the 2.0 PCM from the laserdisc. Guess which mix sounded WWAAAAAYYYY better....

(hint... laserdisc)

SNF is one of my favorite films...a heartbreaking study of lost youth, and now a nostalgic look at a time gone by.

It looks like we may be seeing some movement from Paramount to lossless. The forthcoming Blades Of Glory has PCM on the BD and TrueHD on the HD DVD!

Thanks for sharing, sounds (get it?!?!) like a cool comparison DaViD.
That kind of stuff is important to me. Not just blindly buying into the next shiny new disc. Still steaming about SD DVD's promise of "better than CD sound".

Truly great news Jeff! As great as the HD DVD of MI-3 sounds at 1.5mbs, I would have loved a lossless track. Here's hoping we get lossless on all those Paramount announced titles for both HD DVD & Blu-ray. Top Gun, Jack Ryan Collection etc....

This really sums up the film. It's a very raw film, filled with unpleasant behavior and racial slurs. I was a teenager in Brooklyn at the time the film was released, and it is quite accurate in portraying a segment of the population that did exist at the time. I look at the film as a part of gritty New York Cinema of the 70s, right there with the works of Scorsese and Lumet

Re: Saturday Night Fever on HD! (Just don't touch my hair)

Wait, I have a better idea....

If the Coke sign was blurred in the Grease negative, use CGI to put it BACK! It looks awful. REAL awful. I can't imagine how bad it'll look in HD.

Kudos for putting out SNF.

Now all Paramount needs to do is Star Trek II and First Contact

Re: Saturday Night Fever on HD! (Just don't touch my hair)

The Coke signs don't bother me as much as Olivia Newton John having backup singers during Hopelessly Devoted to You.....the original was of course a solo. I'd be pissed I were her.
