I just checked the screencap in the zoom mode and the flames are still translucent, just much brighter.

Not really big. The standard animation cel is ~ 8 1/2 x 11, but the backgrounds are usually larger to account for panning and tilting through the environment.

I decided to watch the one of the extras - Grand Canyon - have to say, it looks fantastic in 1080 ( 2:35 ) - should sound pretty good too in DTS HD - although in my case I am only getting the basic DTS core as I am running optical out. Nice little gem!

I'm very pleased Disney gave Grand Canyon a new lease on life with a 1080p presentation. And DTS HD to boot!

Can't wait for the Sleeping Beauty reviews! Post them here when you find them!

Believe it or not, cels were given away as promotional tools at Disneyland in the 50's. For free. Usually for things created for the Disneyland TV show, but I suppose its conceivable the same occurred for larger budget endeavours.

As a child of the 50's I was at Disneyland several times. I saw cells for sale and they must of been cheap, because I was able to buy one or two. Not from a significant production, but it was a cell. There was an alligator with Donald (or one of the ducks). Sadly, it's long gone.

I don't understand. The DVD Beaver comparisons between the Blu-Ray and the old DVD version don't show one having any more information than the other, the Blu-Ray is just sharper. I thought we were supposed to see more of the image.

Even though it's "just" 2D animation, the Blu-Ray has a serious edge. It's MUCH sharper. The beauty of HD 2D animation is that it seems as if the animation cell is right in front of your eyes. No blurring, no artifacts, no EE... just sharp black lines and vibrant color. Those screen caps are a thing of beauty. I can't WAIT to pop this in at home.

The tint (contrast) looks a bit different too me. Is it from the captures?
The tint on the covers are different as well; I like the SD DVD for the more purple color scheme.

Someone at AVS pointed out that Gary doesn't use the right colorspace when capturing Blu-ray, so that's likely the reason for the difference.

I'll wait another month or two before I pick this up. With Disney's track record, I'll wait for more of the reviews. I have no plans on double dipping on the Disney classics until they've done it right.

Lack of focus during original photography, perhaps, that was deemed acceptable during the dailies. The first capture also looks like the shot may have used the multiplane camera, as there are several more motion elements in the shot than in the second shot (yes, this film is permanently ingrained on my subconscious), which would use varying planes of focus to achieve the illusion of depth..

Just back from BB. I was there at about 11.35 and I think I was the second clock taken!

The "Sleeping Beauty" island had a good supply of clocks, right in the Center.

This is precisely why some frame grabs less than useful. From memory, and without the disc in front of me, this would seem to be atmospheric background, ie. something else in the foreground WAS in focus, and is now out of frame.

Yes! Now that you've described it, I can see that the tail of the red flag that is still in the foreground looks in perfect focus, but because it's one color, one tends to look past it to every thing else.

One needs to appreciate the genius of Disney and his multiplane technology!
