Computer Display Blacks Out due to HT Receiver

Hello,

I've run into an interesting problem with my Computer hooked up to my Home Theater.

I have my Dell Dimension with Windows Vista Home connected to my Yamaha Home Theater Receiver via DVI-HDMI cable. My Yamaha has 2 HDMI in and 1 HDMI out. I have my Panasonic 62" LCD Rear Projection TV connected to my Yamaha Receiver via an HDMI cable.

This is the problem. I lose the computer video whenever I switch inputs on my Yamaha Receiver. For example. I set my Receiver input to my computer (CBL/SAT due to it being an HDMI input) and I boot up my computer. I see the computer display and everything is fine for as long as I want. But, if I switch the Receiver input to say DVD to watch a DVD for even a second and then go back to the computer the computer video is blacked out. I hear the sound of the computer but not the video.

What do I have setup wrong? It seems to be that the computer is detecting the TV via HDMI or TV is detecting the computer via HDMI and then once it loses it it doesn't get it back. It may be a VISTA issue. I don't know.

Any help would be appreciated. By the way, I've tried to use a DVI-Component cable for my computer but I can't seem to get it to work. I can't even see the computer video when hooked straight into the TV.

I don't have all the model numbers right now because I am at work. If you need them to help me with the problem I can get them later.

Re: Computer Display Blacks Out due to HT Receiver

It sounds like you just need to make some adjustment settings to your computer video card.

Click on: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display

Under the Display, Click the Settings tab and then the Advanced button.

There should be a tab for your Video Card that will enable you to select the signal going out from it. Not knowing what type of card you have, I can't really guide you through but do have a look in this area you may have to use a Force Detection setting to keep the signal from dropping.

Hope this helps.

Congratulations, you have run into the HDMI handshaking issue. For some reason (copyright protection!), the developers thought it would be a good idea to kill the video signal if the source component doesn't get constant feedback from the sink component. Even a moment's interruption can do the trick.

Thanks for the advise.

I just got a chance to check this again. I will check the Display settings but from what Christopher is saying it sounds like I'm out of luck.

Christopher - Am I correct in assuming that there is no solution to this handshaking issue? If that is the case then this is very frustrating. You would have thought that the HDMI developers would have thought of this requirement. I mean come on!!!

This is a feature, not a problem.

It's possible you may be able to force the computer to do right by you, but Vista is designed to "respect" DRM, so workarounds don't necessarily exist. Yamaha should have set up the receiver as an "active repeater" so the source always got feedback, but apparently they didn't realise that was a necessity for acceptable operation with HDMI.
