Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

Thanks for the news Ron. I'll have to get the CE of Taxi Driver. Scorsese being involved in the prosses makes me happy with it. Its his film and I say let us see it his way. As long as Travis shoots first!

I asked Sony to send me a copy to review, but nothing yet.

DVDBeaver states that this version offers the most picture info, but looking at those screenshots the new version looks to be cropped heavier.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

I've always enjoyed Paul Schrader's commentaries, and what he has to say on this disc is interesting, but riddled with way too many long dead spots. I guess maybe he's a little weary of talking about Taxi Driver, because on Autofocus and Blue Collar he pretty much never stopped talking. Would have been nice if they could have at least edited some Scorsese interview clips into the track to fill the dead space. Worth a listen of course, but a bit disappointing.

Haven't listened to the other guy's yet...

Schrader's commentary for the UKR2 of Light Sleeper is excellent, too. The anamorphic transfer is also much better than the 1.33:1 open-matte R1. There's also a commentary by Susan Sarandon and Willem Dafoe.

It seemed to me that he simply hadn't watched the film for a while, perhaps since he did the LaserDisc commentary. It's a pretty easy film to get caught up in. His commentaries are all brilliant, even for a film like Cat People which I don't like that much, Schrader's take on why he did it, and what happened when he did it is fascinating. Likewise with Forever Mine, in fact, there are no bad Schrader commentaries.

Have the end credits been windowboxed on this edition? There was a matte on the right side on the other edition, but it caused the picture to be off center.
