Synopsis: Taxi Driver
At 26, Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (De Niro) is slipping slowly into isolation and violence on the streets of New York City. Trying to solve his insomnia by driving a yellow cab on the night shift, he grows increasingly disgusted by the people who hang out at night: “Someday a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets.” His touching attempts to woo Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a Senator's campaign worker, turn sour when he takes her to a porn movie on their first date. He even fails in his attempt to persuade child prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster) to desert her pimp Sport (Harvey Keitel) and return to her parents and school. Driven to the edge by powerlessness, he buys four handguns and sets out to assassinate the Senator, heading for the infamy of a `lone crazed gunman'.

Surprisingly, I don't have this on DVD. Maybe now is a good time

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

Sounds like the new extras alone justify an upgrade!

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

Yes, but I wonder if this package is going to update the technical specs on Columbia's already-existing Collector's Edition, which I own, and includes a decent Dolby Surround mix and widescreen transfer; is this getting 5.1 audio remixing or did I miss that somewhere in the press information?

Indeed!

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

What I want to know is--will they restore the original "red blood" ending?? I know the original elements were lost but it could be easily reproduced in the transfer stage--all they did was dial down the saturation, so all they need to do now is turn it back up.

So there is actually 3 commentaries then? Strange that the Scorsese commentary isn't listed in the special features run down.

Firstly, I agree that they could try to recreate the look using modern digital tools. But if they do, I hope they would use seamless branching so at the start of the film you select which version of the ending you want to see - either the transfer that is accurate to what the film prints looked like in 1976, or the version with the ending digitally manipulated to evoke the original intent of Scorsese and Michael Chapman.

Personally I'd be annoyed if they only provided the option to see a digitally manipulated version.

I own the last one, but this is one of my all time faves, I'll pick this up for the commentary alone.

I don't like the bleached out look they gave those last scenes so I'd love to see this as well - but unfortunately they obviously haven't restored them because there's no mention in the list of bonus features.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

I think the current DVD has an excellent transfer. From memory the film under went a photo-chemical preservation in the late 1990s, so I assume the original DVD transfer was made from a new inter-negative.

Any improvement in the transfer this time around will probably be because of better film scanners, digital manipulation, and compression tools. The film elements themselves are probably as good as they will ever be.

DVD Times has updated it's specs and has deleted the Sony press release reference to the Scorsese 'commentary'.

Didn't the original Criterion laserdisc have a Scorsese commentary?

I beleive it was Schrader and Scorsese. So it is a bit disappointing Columbia didn't get it from this new DVD. But it is possible Criterion just wanted too much for it.

NO Scorsese commentary means I'll be keeping my Laserdisc!

A triple dip and no HD version on the way still! Grrrr...
I have the Japanese SB version which looks fab to hold me over.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

Ian Jane at the DVD Maniacs Forum posted a single comparison of the old vs. new transfer of Taxi Driver.

Brighter and with more cropping, especially at the bottom.

I feel that the UK edition of the previous SE still looks great, though I will double-dip as the extras should be amazing.

Edit: Looking at the bloodbath scene on my UK disc, the change in the elements is obvious. Am I right in saying that they duped the neg a few generations to desaturate the blood to appease the censors. It will be interested to see how saturated the color is on the new transfer.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

I wonder how this will compare to the R2 Japanese Superbit version?

Are they sourced from the same transfer?

I'm waiting for a DVDBeaver comparisson with this one..

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

DVD Beaver compared the original R1 DVD, the CE and the Japanese Superbit in 2005:

Taxi Driver comparison

The Japanese Superbit is far too warm - the colors are off. Not very typical of Chapman's lighting in the 70s. I have seen this in 35mm and it believe me, it has a cool color scheme and the night exteriors are underlit. It also has the most cropping.

I have always wanted to see frames from the 1991 Criterion Laserdisc transfer, which Michael Chapman supervised.

Apparently, according to Peter Biskind, it was a trade-off with other cuts the censor wanted made; Scorsese gave way on the blood, because he wasn't displeased with the way it looked.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

Guys,

I have some information I was able to obtain regarding this upcoming
release of Taxi Driver that I'd like to share with you.

This new Collector's Edition DVD is from a new remastered HD source.
Sony worked with Michael Chapman on the color and overall look and
both he and Thelma Schoonmaker (Marty's editor) approved the HD
transfer.

The overall look of this DVD transfer will be subtle compared to
the last release with some places perhaps not as so subtle. Sony
was very diligent about removing a lot of dirt and scratches and
such. However, in the end, this is definitely Chapman's color correction.

There also seems to be a myth about the color ending of the film.
There seems to be the impression that the original color ending of the
film is lost. Not so. The original negative for the ending is what it has
always been and was never removed or cut out. There was never an
alternate negative. The reason the film looks desaturated is because
of a photochemical process the negative was run through at the time
Scorsese was finishing the film. The ending is the way it is because
Marty wants it that way (whether he originally intended it or not).

In fact, it is my understanding that Scorsese is adamant that the look
not be altered in any way, which means the film will still look grainy
and somewhat degraded when it comes out. It is intentional and
as such, this is something that people don't seem to be aware of.
The Columbia lady logo is even degraded (look at your old dvd) and
Scorsese insists that it not be replaced.

Quite often people will jump on the studios for what they feel are
transfer mistakes that were made in house. Most often, transfers
are supervised by the Director and what you get is their interpretation
of what it should look and sound like. For instance, this release sports
a brand new 5.1 audio track mixed by Marty's own sound people.

The studio would never think of doing something on their own
without involving the original filmmaker.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

So the big question is why isn't Sony releasing this on Blu-Ray?... since they've released other Sony classics on Blu-Ray like Are We Done Yet?, The Benchwarmers, Little Man and Stomp the Yard.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Taxi Driver Limited Collector's Edition

As if Sony/Columbia's experiment with snapper cases on the last release (one of the only titles they released in snappers if I remember correctly) wasn't bad enough, this time they sink to even lower depths with the packaging (in my opinion of course !).

While I prefer uniform keepcase packaging for all releases I don't mind digipaks when they are properly done (the Criterion digipaks for example). But this one comes in a three-fold digipak with a lame plastic sleeve that doesn't slide over the entire width of the digipak. In the cover scan just the black portion on the left with the title is the plastic sleeve. Pretty sloppy packaging if you ask me but oh well at least the improved transfer and the chock-full of supplements on the second disc make it a worthwhile upgrade for fans of this movie.

-D

P. S. And yeah it was funny to see Scorsese being touted as the Academy Award winning director of Departed (on that little sticker on the outside). What's next ? A blurb citing Meet the Parents in order to sell DeNiro in Raging Bull ?

Yup, the packaging is painfully bad. Someone was buckin' for a promotion. Hopefully, they'll be fired, instead.

DVD Beaver just posted up their comparison of the new Taxi Driver SE:

I'm gonna have to pick this one up, as the original version is defintely showing its age.

Best Buy's buyer once again knocks it outta the park--none of my area BB's had this in stock.

Ended up getting it at Target, 3 bucks cheaper anyway.
