When you go to write a message. In the toolbar you will see a white icon. Click on that and you will be given a list of smilies to use.

Thanks, Parker, but I want to know how to create them from scratch. Where, for example, does the dancing banana come from? Somebody created it. How?

You can use paint for stills... Or find some animated GIF maker, and pair that with paint.

Probably using one of the (photo-) paint programs. E.g here's Corel Painter X. To make 3-D looking little creatures, you must either be a better painter, or use some high-quality tools.

Making a moving smilie isn't very difficult, though. Making a nice/beautiful/funny one....
