Calling all Jazz fans! Need some Chris Botti recommendations.

I just bought tickets to see Diana Krall and Chris Botti. Well…actually I bought the tickets to see Diana Krall…and Chris Botti was a bonus. I want to buy a couple of his CD’s before I go see him but I’m almost completely unfamiliar with his work. The only time I’ve heard Botti play is on Sting’s concert DVD “All This Time”. I really like that Bluesy/Jazz style. My other Jazz favorites are Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, Diana Krall, Boz Scaggs, Dave Grusin, Spyro Gyra, Stanley Jordan, Norah Jones and Lee Ritenour. I would like to get a Top Five suggestion list of CD’s that I “MUST” have, before I see him next month.

p.s. I tend to stay away from "torch songs" and "show tunes".

Well, I have Night Sessions, which seems to follow the standard "smooth jazz" template for the most part. I haven't listened to it for a while.

Where I first became familiar with him is with Bruford Levin Upper Extremities (BLUE) project. That's definitely a lot more experimental and probably wouldn't get you familiar with what he normally does.

I saw Botti at the JVC Jazz Fest back when I was living in Miami in summer 2005, part of a great evening with sets from Raul Midon (absolutely amazing if you've never heard of him), Brenda Russell, and Peabo Bryson. You might consider checking out his live CD from 2006 (also available on DVD and just released this week on Blu-Ray), give you a good idea of how his shows are structured...or I'd second checking out Night Sessions.

I third 'Night Sessions' and also recommend 'Slowing Down The World'. Love that smooth jazz vibe.

I also want to get 'To Love Again.' as it has a great duet with Jill Scott called 'Good Morning Heartache'.......great track.

Yes to Night Sessions as being the "jazziest." When I Fall In Love if you want the romantic ballads (according to Chris). His new record Italia comes out in late August/early September and will have a Bocelli duet written by David Foster along with Morricone tunes from The Mission, Malena and Once Upon A Time In America. Eighteen tracks were recorded and probably 11 or 12 will make the cut. Can't wait!

No you bought tickets to go see Chris Botti....we saw the same show you did. Dianna came out and did 6 songs...6...for $165 for mid level tickets for 2.

Thankfully Chris's show was excellent. If he toured on his own and Dianna toured on her own and offered to play 2 hour straight, I'd pay to go see Chris.

We were incredibly disappointed with her.

We have Italiana and its a great CD. We also bought his last CD at the show and the name escapes me. Great CD but poor production, Italiana is great.

Our best however is Chris Botti Live on BluRay. Its my reference audio piece along with a select few others. For live music its amazing.

He puts on an excellent show as does everyone in his band. Pick up Chris Botti Live on DVD if you don't have a BD player....but if your an audio fan the BD is worth buying a BD player for.
