Resetting H.P. Deskjet Printers

I refill my own cartridges, but one of my H.P.'s won't accept the level. Is there a way to reset these?

Thanks in advance

No, that's a "gotcha". They set it up so that the internal software is copyrighted and protected by a security measure, so that trying to reset it is a DMCA violation. The threat of jail time thus keeps competition out of the market.

Most of their printers will accept refilled cartridges, but you won't get a warning when ink is running out.

In some printers, it won't even print at all!

There was a report on one of the French Canadian consumer shows about a year ago showing just how bad the problem was. There's a series of high-end Epson printers out there that use around SIX cartridges in their cradles. The show found out that even when the printer indicated a cartridge was empty, there was a surprisingly high amount of ink still left inside the cartridge. I believe that particular printer was the subject of a class-action lawsuit.

The best printer I've seen was an older model that was retrofitted with four small jars of ink and some rubber hose. The printer could last forever without a refill!
