Timeless Media Group - New Releases - Page 7

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

I tell you, I support TIMELESS and their releases - I was pure genius to use their own sourced prints!

Heck, I know a couple of the collectors who supplied them 16mm - so I know they got decent prints to use!

Still, better 16mm from the loving hands of collectors than butchered prints from the studios!

Movies Unlimited is listing 1/28 as a release date for "LARAMIE in Color": Part I with "all 28 episodes" from the 3rd Season. I don't understand what the "Part I" is all about.

Well, color episodes from Season 4 could be "in color" part 2

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

Just watched most of the first "M Squad" DVD. The first episode looked pretty good and I was encouraged but the second episode is so washed out it's barely watchable. Episode 3 isn't bad, but 4 and 5 are not so hot. It almost looks as if they used different transfer equipment for some of the episodes but, unlike other sets of theirs that I have, this one so far is the most variable in pq.

We know timeless gathered prints from several sources and transferes to complete the series.

Timeless didn't get transfers directly from Universal on this release and others, like "Checkmate" and "Arrest and Trial." They are simply getting the license to release "M Squad" on DVD from Universal but have to come up with their own print sources, which include 16 mm prints submitted by collectors, hence the disparity in the picture quality from one episode to the next. It may be not the most ideal way of releasing a television series, but at least Timeless has resurrected a number of older shows that would never have received a major studio release.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

Just finshed watching the 70 of 78 episodes TEXAN set. I liked it. It's similar in tone to TATE and THE RESTLESS GUN. The prints were fine and full-length for the most part with product placements on some of the end credits. I think the annoucer was Marvin Miller, (The Millionaire).

I was surprised and pleased at the theme song, which I did not remember being part of the Texan. It also shows up in the Untouchables as tense background music. I think this thumping, driving tune was also the main theme for the fire-rescue show, RESCUE 8.

The second season shows had a pair of story arcs type episodes, which were shown out of order. The set followed the episode order that's found in reference books. I guess that's accurate, and another case of the original network executive, whose job is to mix-up episodes that have continuity to confuse the audience.

Towards the end of the run, they reworked/rewrote at least three episodes, so they could use the action footage again. They even brought back the same villian actors to be the bad guys, so they did not have to reshoot all the shootouts. I wonder if they knew the Texan was being cancelled and decided to really same some money?

#71 "Lady Tenderfoot" reworked #12 The Easterner
#76 "Mission To Montery" reworked "The Caballero"
#77 "Badman" reworked #19 "Return To Friendly"

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

Timeless is also releasing a two-disc condensed version of "The Texan" on February 24th with, what I'm assuming will be, 10 episodes based on the stated running time of 250 minutes at DVD Pacific's web site.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

There is no doubt that the Texan did not have much of a budget to work with. The most laughable episodes were the ones in the cattle drive arc. Bill Longley, AKA the Texan, AKA trail boss, on a horse shot against a movie screen of moving cattle. I'm sure a lot of shows did similar things, but as a kid I never would have noticed it. Other than a couple of bad episodes, I have to say that I have for the most part really liked this show - a good solid "B" Western with plenty of good old fashioned values. Also, it is great to have all of the episodes.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

I previously watched the Restless Gun and now I'm about 10 episodes into The Texan. While I'm enjoying The Texan I will have to give the nod to the Restless Gun as the better show. I'm just not a big fan of The Texan music score (it feels out of place to me), and I think John Payne just did a better overall job with the role. To bad there are more episodes available for the Restless Gun.

While The Texan is more complete, there is more variation between the video quality of the episodes. The Restless Gun is pretty consistent throughout. With The Texan, they go from almost studio quality to extremely washed out.

Still I'm just thankful to be able to watch these at all. Being 48, these are before my time and I do not recall them as reruns like Bonanza and the Rifleman when growing up. So far I have the Restless Gun, Guns of Will Sonnett, Laredo, Branded, and the Texan.

On it's way is M Squad that I just got a really good deal on for under $60. I'm assuming the quality is going to be similar to the Texan, all over the map.

I've watched eight of the 15 discs so far. The first three to four discs do, in fact, have varying video quality, but after those discs video quality becomes more consistent. I haven't had any major issues with the season 2 episodes that I've watched thus far.

I would have to totally agree with you Bob. I just finished disc 10, and not only is the video much more consistant, but the Jazzy score that they added in season 2 only makes the show better. I'm really going to be sad when I've finished this set. It has to be one of the coolest TV shows around and probably my favorite discovery from 1950's TV.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

I guess it would be too much to hope for, that the Feb.24th, 250 minute, TEXAN release would be the missing eight episodes.

I think the reason those process shots look so out of place on the Texan cattle drive arc is that, prior to these episodes, most of the outdoor scenes were really outdoors. In some of the cattle drive scenes, I don't think they were really even on horseback, (live or stuffed). They looked like they were just standing there, and holding some reins.

I agree with Brad that John Payne is great as Vint Bonner in The Restless Gun, and I really believe that he is the fastest gun. Or maybe just the better actor than most TV gunmen.

When you watch all these series episodes in a row it's fun to spot the same sets, props, and even actors over and over again.

Did you guys notice that tall thin actor, who plays a detective in most every episode of M-Squad. He usually is the one who gets shot any time Lee Marvin and the squad break in on an armed suspect, guns blazing. But he's back in the next episode and sometimes even that same episode where he was shot. A quick healer.

Another actor I have noticed in the background on M Squad is Al Cavens, who usually plays a uniformed officer in the office scenes. Cavens and his father Fred were the sword masters and guest star sword doubles on Zorro. What's amazing about that, is that Fred Cavens was in his 70s at the time.

Interesting that you mention that, I happen to watch about 8 episodes of the Texan in two evenings and I'd swear I saw the same house with front door, living room, and banister stairwell in four of the episodes. Each with the same angle camera shot but just different families. I was thinking the very same thing.

There is also a particular dead end canyon with a cave I have seen multiple times across shows (e.g., Texan, Guns of Will Sonnett, Restless Gun). I guess there are only so many good canyons to shoot from in California, or this is on some studio lot.

I've finished all of the Restless Gun and I've now been bouncing back and forth between The Texan, Guns Of Will Sonnett, Laredo, Branded, Rawhide, Have Gun Will Travel, Wanted Dead or Alive, Wild Wild West, and Gunsmoke. Soon to be added to the list will be M Squad and Big valley.

Always looking for other options. Some other series I've seen referenced are Tate, Cheyenne, Tall Man, and Cimarron City. What do you all think of these and are there others I should consider?

I think you would enjoy all of them, try also 'Have Gun, Will Travel' anither excellent western.

I am a little concerned at the most recent review on Amazon of the forthcoming 'Laramie' from Timeless. This reviewer seems to have actually watched it & is quite scathing about the quality. Anybody else seen it yet ?

Each show has it merits, but if I were to select just one I'd have to go with "Cheyenne," for several reasons. First, "Cheyenne" was one of the first of the "adult westerns" debuting during the Fall of 1955. It also was one of Warner Brothers' first entries into television production. Second, it is the only one of the numerous Warner TV westerns of the 1950s like "Maverick," "Sugarfoot," "Bronco," and "Colt 45" to have a full season released on DVD. Third, the transfers look very sharp for a 50 year old TV series. Fourth, there is a modern day interview with the series' star, Clint Walker. Warner's presentation does omit the "Warner Brothers Presents" promotional films with Gig Young that were used to promote then currrent theatrical releases like "The Searchers" and "Rebel Without a Cause," and during its first year, "Cheyenne" rotated with other WB produced shows, so there are only 15 episodes in season 1.

Of the other three, "Tate" is the rarest and all 13 episodes of the summer replacement series are included on Timeless' release. "Tall Man" and "Cimarron City" are releases utilizing whatever prints that Timeless could cobble together; in that respect they are incomplete, but considering that these shows haven't aired in years, they are worthy of consideration.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

Brad, that canyon and caves location you have spotted, is called Bronson Canyon,in Griffith Park, Los Angeles and in addtion to the shows you mentioned it appears in the Lone Ranger, (in the the TV origin story and the Lone Ranger 1956 movie), Range Rider, Whirlybirds, Assignment Underwater, Rawhide, Kung Fu, Combat!, Garrison's Gorillas, Rat Patrol, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and even Mod Squad to name a few. I believe, with some prop trees in the front the caves were also the secret entrances to the Batcave and Zorro's hideout.

After your comments and a little more research I agree. I have plenty to watch for a while but I'm going to put this top on my summer sales list. In addition, watching "M Squad" has me also thinking about picking up some "Untouchables" this summer.

It looks like the "Cheyenne" DVDs came out in 2006, is there any word about future seasons being released or was this a one shot deal?

Also, I sure would like to see some of the old "Wagon Train". I know they have some of the later color seasons, but I'm a fan of Ward Bond's and would like to see his episodes. I first recall seeing him in the old Errol Flynn film "Gentleman Jim". From there on it was amazing how many films I watched that Mr Bond ended up having a part in. Anyone hear if TMG has any intention or even ability to release these?

Good stuff Bob, thanks for the insights. I have some of the other series you mention above so I'll have to keep a look out.

I haven't heard anything further about more seasons of "Cheyenne" and given Warner's miniscule output of pre-1970 TV shows on DVD, it doesn't look good for future releases. Warner also issued a three episode sampler of "Cheyenne," but one of the episodes is a season 1 "repeat."

Timeless did release a few of the Ward Bond episodes last Fall as part of the mega "Wagon Train" release but they were more of a bonus to the extended length color episodes which were the main focus of the set. I have no idea how well "Wagon Train" sold, but I wouldn't be surprised if more of the Bond episodes were released in the future.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

It appears that the forthcoming 2 disc release of 'Restless Gun' has six episodes which were not on the previous box release whilst the 'Tall Man' has four. Quite what the marketing strategy is here I can't figure out ?
Don't know about 'Cimarron City'.

well, it's simple - TIMELESS found more 16mm prints they didn't have when they did the first box releases!

Or they had them but weren't able to find anymore to create a three DVD set. TMG seems to like to release in either three DVD sets or entire series collections. At least that is what I found with the other releases from TMG that I have, e.g., Restless Gun 1, Laredo 1 & 2, Guns of Will Sonnett 1 & 2, Branded 1 & 2, and M Squad series set.

Can you supply us with the individual episode titles on these upcoming sets? I can't seem to find them anywhere on the net.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

Just finished, watching The Texan starring Rory Calhourn.
What a great show and also enjoy the opening and closing soundtrack credits.
Rory Calhourn was perfect as The Texan and Clint Walker would have done justice to that role as well.
Now for M Squad and Gunsmoke Season 3 (After I finish Here Come The Brides-this weekend).
I will now hope in wait for "Season Sets" for The Tall Man
The Restless Gun
Cimarron City
I am getting tired of purchasing repeat episodes after initially purchasing:-
The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp
Jim Bowie
The Little Rascals etc..
-where they are now coming out in complete season sets.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

I emailed TMG a while back about more releases of the Restless Gun and they said don't expect anything any time soon. According to Amazon the new set is from EDI not TMG and based on the time given it would seem to contain about 8 episodes (200 minutes).

Since TMG fit 24 episodes on 3 disks I'm not sure why EDI can't fit 6 to 8 on one disk (listing shows 2 disks)

EDI appears to be either a sub-licencer or an partner label.

Chris, thanks for that info! "Billy's Baby" is another Christmas-themed episode, so it looks like I'll be buying that TALL MAN set for sure.

Re: Timeless Media Group - New Releases

Does anyone know the titles of the 10 episodes of the Texan that were released on Tuesday? I am curious if the set contains any of the missing 8 episodes form the 10 dvd set issued last year. I really enjoyed watching those 70 episodes and would nice if the set could be completed. Also, is anyone aware of any westerns Timeless may be releasing later this year?
