Quick audio decoding question

Thread Starter
So I have an audio card and a receiver and let's say I'm playing a DVD with Intervideo's WinDVD. I can choose to decode in, say, Dolby Digital in all 3 places. What happens in that situation? Does only the first device (the player) decode the audio? I'm guessing I should choose only one decoder, and the best one at that (probably my receiver) but will the signal be decoded multiple times and is this a bad thing? Thanks,

Matt

Re: Quick audio decoding question

Since you have a receiver that is capable of decoding Dolby Digital, you'll want to use that option and send the audio via S/PDIF to avoid running multiple cables from your sound card to the receiver's multi-channel inputs. You'll need an optical or coaxial cable, depending on the connector options of your sound card.

In WinDVD, go to Setup, choose the Audio tab, and in the Audio Output Configuration section choose the "Digital (S/PDIF) out to External Processor" option.
