Jean,

You Dog!

Tell you what....I'm interested, but going to wait for other guinea pigs
to try it on their phones first. I'll do mine based on those results.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Yeah, I would hold off too. I'd be worried that Apple would get upset because it could put a dent in their business model and do a firmware update that would either clear the memory, cause some issue or brick the phone because it was modified. Kind of like the modded Xbox's that go on Xbox Live and get banned for life. But then again, maybe I'm over-estimating the possibilities of Apple's potential retribution.

I just started a separate topic regarding the first truly awesome third-party iPhone "app". Every iPhone owner will want this "app" on his/her iPhone:

So the ringtone modifications works?

Just got mine from the Soho Apple Store -- there were some boxes stacked behind the registers. Too bad I was away during the madness, and missed opening day

Anyway -- I'll unpack it when I get home tonight.

Yup.

The instructions are pretty easy to follow. I would just warn ANYONE doing this that it might be Bad for your phone if something goes wrong. On the positive side, people with messed up phones have successfully simply restored them.

I'm interested to see how much Maddox's review on the iPhone is going to slow down their sales.

Link (Rated TV-MA for Adult Language & Awesomeness).

Not getting endorsed by the Best Page in the Universe has to hurt Apple with the pirate population.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Man, AT&T is truly awful.

I started the online activation process last night, got e-mail saying my address couldn't be verified. Called their customer service -- was told that they their computer system for NYC hadn't been working since Saturday(!) and after spending an hour+ mostly listening to their insipid on-hold music, was assured that the number transfer and activation were complete. "Waiting for AT&T activation" and No Service on the iPhone. They tell me -- just wait a couple of hours. This morning -- still No Service. Back to AT&T C.S., more on-hold music (mercifully shorter), bla-bla, power cycle the phone, still Waiting for AT&T activation" and No Service. Now they tell me it may take up to 24 hours as I'm transferring a number.

If I call my cell number from the land line -- busy signal. Anyway, I guess I have to wait until tonight before I have to deal with those #%$#$!! kind people from AT&T again...

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Well, finally this morning, 36 hours and three long phone calls to AT&T CS later, I got service. Not a good experience, but hopefully I won't have to deal with AT&T CS again for a good long while.

The iPhone itself is great. Three things in dire need of improvement:

1) Ability to sync different things from different computers and to move music, etc. manually: this for me is a huge issue as I don't have music on my PowerBook which I used to sync contacts/e-mail with, and I don't have e-mail/contacts on my MacMini HTPC where all the Music/Video is. Currently only Podcasts can be synced separately.

Apple, fix this NOW please. There is no reason on Earth why the iPhone can't be as flexible as an iPod, including manual updating of Music/Video.

The only thing I was able to sync separately were Podcasts.

2) Ability to read/write e-mail in landscape mode. This is crucial also -- for me e-mails, when I zoom them in enough to make them readable I have to keep moving them left/right to see the entire text.

3) Push e-mail from .Mac -- come on, don't make your paying customers second class citizens! (Right now push is available from Yahoo only).

Also: Ability to use the iPhone as a modem (tethered to a Mac either via bluetooth or the USB cable). It would be huge for travelers.

Also: iChat support, including voice.

EDIT: Added the third reason which I somehow forgot while typing

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Hasn't happened to me yet -- but I don't do all that much web browsing -- in WiFi areas I usually have a computer around.

OTOH, Safari 3 Beta crashes on me regularly. (I keep using it though, because it has a couple of huge improvements over Safari 2). Presumably the iPhone browser is based on Safari 3(???).

You can set this behaviour in the program called Image Capture that should be in your Applications folder -- run it and go into the preferences to set what happens when a camera is connected or when a scanner is turned on.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

I thought this was cute. For the record, I don't have an iPhone and have no opinion as to how good or bad it is other than the fact it does not have user replaceable battery.

From the Huffington Post:

Quote:
Dearest iPhone....

To be honest, I'd much rather be writing about how fulfilled I am with you and how wonderful you are. It seems that you've fooled others before me and they are willing to ignore your obvious flaws. But they are shallow sheep! I need more. The fact that I have to hit three keys to make a phone call and I can't dial out of my contacts just by typing is unacceptable to me. I don't want to scroll through all of my S's just to call Steve (I have like 80 contacts in "S" alone - five Steves! -- sorry, but I have a life outside of you). The last straw for me was when I found that if you are sick or hurt, I have to pay Apple 99 bucks a day for a replacement while you're in the hospital. That is so unfair.

I want you to know that despite my decision to break up with you and give you back to my Mac guy, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that as we part, our lives may be touched with much joy, keeping in our hearts and souls the affection and respect we've felt for each other and hope that the next version of you is a little more compatible with what I need in my most prized and important companion.
A sad kiss on your tiny (wonderful) screen,
Chris
P.S. The Blackberry is not as pretty as you, but it gives me what I need for now.

It's a nice device, but I think I'm going to wait for rev.B before buying.

Surgically alters thumbs to better use iPhone
Written by James Benfly
Wednesday, 08 August 2007

Quote:
Thomas Martel, 28, of Bonnie Brae is a big guy. So he has a hard time using the features on ever-shrinking user interfaces on devices like his new iPhone. At least, he did, until he had his thumbs surgically altered in a revolutionary new surgical technique known as "whittling."

"From my old Treo, to my Blackberry, to this new iPhone, I had a hard time hitting the right buttons, and I always lost those little styluses," explains Martel. "Sure, the procedure was expensive, but when I think of all the time I save by being able to use modern handhelds so much faster, I really think the surgery will pay for itself in ten to fifteen years. And what it's saving me in frustration - that's priceless."

"This is really, on the edge sort of stuff," explains Dr. Robert Fox Spars, who worked on developing the procedure. "We're turning plastic surgery from something that people use in service of vanity, to a real tool for improving workplace efficiency."

The procedure involved making a small incision into both thumbs and shaving down the bones, followed by careful muscular alteration and modification of the fingernails. While Martel's new thumbs now appear small and effeminate in comparison to his otherwise very large hands, he says he can still lift "pretty much anything I could lift before the surgery - though opening spaghetti sauce jars has been a problem. That was a big surprise."

Microsoft Zune Phone

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

OK, Guys: My Verizon contract is up this week and I'm ready to take the iPhone plunge.

This phone will also be my first real iPod (although I've used iTunes for years); so I'm pretty excited about this!

Do any of you iPhone "old timers" have any caveats and/or suggestions/advice to throw my way?

I'll be purchasing the 8 GB iteration of the phone (of course)! My office uses Msoft webmail and I have a personal Hotmail account. I would expect that I should have no trouble syncing those accounts.

Wow! My mind just boggles thinking that I'm going to have Wikipedia/Google/ESPN in my pocket(!) and all for $60/month, even including a reasonable voice communications package!

Am I getting *too* excited, or what?

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Joseph,

Owning the iPhone for a few months now I am less
than enthusiastic about it than I was. I would suggest that perhaps
you wait for the next revision.

Though the phone is leaps and bounds above any other I have
used, it's still waaaaay overpriced at $600 for all the minor flaws
that it has.

Email is a real hassle on the phone if you don't set it up with
a GMAIL account. Even then, if you are the type who receives
lots of messages, mass deletion is cumbersome.

The other day I missed an important phone call because I was
checking and responding to email. In other words, phone function
is totally cut off when working with email.

Overall voice quality/clarity is poor on the phone. So is the
speakerphone.

Worst of all, at least in my area, AT&T is horrible compared to
Verizon.

If I had the chance to do this all over again, would I? Yes, only
because it is a fun little gadget. However, it pains me to realize
that Apple will be releasing a better version of this phone which
most certainly I'll need to upgrade to in order to rid myself of the
problems that exist with this one.

You should verify you can access office email from your office to your iPhone before buying. Hopefully it does, but there's a lot of talk on how the iPhone doesn't support some standard office Microsoft email systems.

Ah, unless you mean you will use the iPhone web browser to go to your web-based email system! In which case, well, I'd still double check. I've found Microsoft Outlook Web Access only works well in Internet Explorer -- the magic sauce doesn't work well in Firefox; I've not tried Safari.

I'd be interested in getting the opinions of alot of Iphone users, the device definately was sold on hype over substance.

Well as an iPhone owner I'd say the hype is based on substance -- Apple doesn't have some magical ability to turn the press into a hype machine. If the product is say AppleTV, the hype doesn't exist.

As Ron points out the iPhone has stuff in need of improvement. But what it does have completely blows away everything else on the market. After playing with my iPhone a bunch of people at my office are dropping their existing phones like hot potatoes and getting iPhones, others are counting days until their contract expires.

It may or may not be right for you -- but it is a breakthrough device.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Thanks for the replies!

Dave, I've already tried "MSoft Outlook Web Access" with the PC version of Safari, and it works just fine!

But after reading Ron's less than ringing endorsement, I have to admit that my enthusiasm is a little tempered now.

From my way of thinking, though, this is not just a $600 phone. It's a $350 Video iPod with an innovative interface combined with a $250 web-enabled smart phone. Since this would be my first iPod, I think it would still be worth the leap for me. (Of course, it helps that it's also a fun gadget!)

But after reading Ron's remarks I'm going to have to at least *think* about it for a few days ...

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

I had one ordered and scheduled to ship. Of course, my wife talked me out of it because it was a lot of money to drop when our baby was due at any time.

I still want one, but I think I'm going to wait a while.
