iPhone - so...what's the deal? - Page 5

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

My wife and I both want this phone, and since we are already AT&T customers it will only cost $20 more monthly per phone for the data plan. Only thing holding us back right now is it not being 3G. So were probably gonna hold out for version 2. But if the user reviews are favorable, I might pull the trigger early.

looking forward to your review Ron.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

I arrived at the Freehold Mall at 2:30pm EST

There were 70+ people on line in front of the Apple Store.

Around the corner, at the AT&T store, there were only 10 people.
Couldn't understand why there was only 10 people but I got on line
and the manager is assuring us that we will get one in a little over
2 hours.

Even at 4:30pm the line at the A&T store is less than 30. Must
be close to 100 in front of the Apple store.

Pretty cool site here. Many of us have our Macbooks out and
are typing away madly on the internet.

Is it possible that the Apple Store had a coolness factor that a mere cell phone provider's outlet doesn't have? Afterall, part of Apple's cachet is their coolness appeal. Also, it could be because it is an Apple iPhone and those in line at the Apple Store may not realize they can buy it from AT&T.

Sounds like you'll be out of the store in a flash.
Have Fun!

AT&T locations have a limit of 1 iPhone per customer, Apple stores will have a limit of 2. Maybe that's why?

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

There are reportedly already over 200 people in line at the Apple Store in Plano, Texas. It is only 3:00pm.

I'll be ordering mine online.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

AT&T vs. Apple: The iPhone is an "Apple" product. All the ads clearly state it's an Apple thing. The interested, but non expert, consumer may only really get that it's Apple and go to Apple, sort of on auto-pilot.

It's also an Apple "event" -- for those into first day, early adoption, be part fo the event, I'm guessing that going to Apple is part of the whole experience.

Just guessing.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Ron, perhaps you can take a photo w/ your new phone from outside the store and upload it to the forum.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Nah, only buying one phone.

4:30 now and only about 35 people on the AT&T line compared
to about 100 people on the other side of the Mall at Apple. That
makes sense about the 1 per person limit.

AT&T just closed their doors. They are setting up for the onslaught.

We have been told that you need a credit card to activate as
there is (I think) a $40 fee. The activation is done online.

I am getting all this information second hand from the manager
but the phone comes with its own dock and a USB charger (not
a wall charger).

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

The FAQ said $36 activation fee, but if there are taxes...

....and understand, I am getting all this from the store manager
so the facts may not be 100%

Something like this would take care of that.

According to iLounge (who are usually very accurate about these things), there is indeed a USB wall charger in the box - the standard Apple square white adapter with a USB jack on one side and the prongs for the wall socket that pop out of the other. Also in the box - the dock, the USB-to-dock cable (useable for hooking the dock or iPhone to your PC, or the iPhone to the USB power adapter), the stereo headset (typical Apple white earbuds with microphone and little inline click remote), and a cleaning cloth.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

I gotta say, I thought I had made a decision to hold off, but there's an AT&T store right on the way home and it's going to be hard to keep my car from pulling in.

I've got a fever, and the only prescription is... iPhone!!

Reports are that the stock ratio of 8GB units to 4GB is about 4:1. Ron, what size do you plan on getting???

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

From AppleInsider:

Quote:
The rumor floating by way of MacNN is that the first 50 people at each Apple Store will receive "a special gift" in addition being some of the first to claim an iPhone.

This may be why the line is so much longer at the Apple store.

The articale says flagship Apple stores are receiving 580 phones; less (unspecified) for the smaller units.

And Woz was the line-starter at the San Jose Valley Fare Apple Store this morning!!

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Craig,

Is it just at the Apple stores? I'm at AT&T (with 20 minutes to go)

I am getting the 8GB version. For $100 more...why not?

Last entry. Battery running low.

If you're referring to the 8GB to 4GB ratio, I believe I read somewhere it was both Apple & AT&T stores.

Looking forward to hearing from you when you get home with your new toy!!

What's this, porn with a USB power adapter? That sounds too kinky for me.

That's what the cool net kids are calling the inevitable pics & video of unboxing a coveted new piece of geek gear.

I think I first heard the term uttered by Cali Lewis on the GeekBrief TV video podcast.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Got it. Only 15 minutes on the line.

I'm activating it now. Had to first download the newest version
of iTunes.

So far things are going well. Unfortunately, I'm charging it
up tonight and working tomorrow so I won't have any thoughts
till late tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.

If I can sneak a photo tonight I will.

Update: Phone activated. iTunes already picked up all my configured
email accounts (mac and POP3) and is transferring them over to the phone
including contacts, calendar and photos. The entire activation took under
10 minutes.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Did you transfer your Verizon number over??

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Listen...It's late and I have to be up early for work.

Would a blurry picture with my fingerprints on the device do okay?

iphone.jpg

Yes, transferred Verizon information. You will need your Verizon account number.
You are told that it may take up to 6 hours to be transferred. You can make calls
but not receive.

Signup was so damn easy. Took mere minutes. The synch was just like an iPod synch.

Will have more for you all tomorrow afternoon...plus, I am sure that there are others
who will be chiming in.

Re: iPhone - so...what's the deal?

Quick thoughts....

Shitty speakerphone. Sounds very "tinny"

Calls sound reasonably good when next to ear.. Nothing great.

Email looks amazing! First time I ever saw email displayed
so well on a phone.

I am hooked into my home WiFi and the Internet loads very
fast and looks amazing. You browse with your fingers, tapping
and enlarging.

I even like the keyboard. The very first time I used it I was
typing pretty damn fast with minimal mistakes. The keyboard
is not hard to learn.

I need to turn in for the night, but just a few minutes using this
and I am already in love. On the surface, the phone is that good!
