Me too, it's not like on Angel where he'll lose his soul if he gets happy lol.

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

Sigh.....

I guess the slight change in the thread title is better than no change. I still think that no other show thread has a "commentary" in the title.

It should just be Moonlight: Season 1

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

Aargh! I just watched this weeks Moonlight and noticed in the coming attractions at the end they said something like "only 2 new episodes of the series remaining" (paraphrasing from memory). Does this mean the show will not be back?

I had not heard this. If so, that is very sad and shocking. It won its timeslot this week.

No one knows. No one will know until CBS announces their fall schedule later this month.

I don't think parsing the language of the previews has ever been a useful way to determine what's going to happen with a show. Why do people keep doing it?

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

A little bit of good news. In a Hollywood Reporter article, they said the following regarding this show:

Quote:
"Moonlight": Since returning post-strike, "Moonlight" remains the weakest link in CBS' Friday night lineup. Yet the vampire drama continues to win its time period. A pickup is all but certain.

Here is a link to the entire article:
Networks generous with renewals

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

That is good news.

I needed some after learning about the upcoming PG-13 and McG directed Terminator film. [[[SPIT]]]

Mick St. John just might be the most likable, and cool, vampire ever.

"Tradition, mostly." It is like asking people here when a movie that hasn't even opened yet is going to be released on DVD, or if there is any news on season 3 of a series whose first two seasons were released six years ago and sold barely enough copies to cover the silk-screening costs.

According to the IMDB home page they now have Moonlight listed under the cancelled category.

I read about the cancellation on Variety this morning. I liked the show but apparently not enough of people.

Oh well.

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

This really sucks....

It is amazing how a show can consistently win it's timeslot and yet not be worthy of a 2nd season.

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

CBS is a rough place for a new show to get traction - they have so many shows that do very well that if they decide it's worthwhile to churn the bottom 20%, that often includes shows having success other networks would be satisfied with.

TURN IN YOUR WHEDON FAN HAT RIGHT FREAKING NOW.

Blech!!!!

Interesting thread title change, but wouldn't (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight" but pretty much a ripoff of "Angel") be more appropriate?

Angel, Kate, Darla, Doyle, probably a few more all with similar situations but different names and faces, and that's just from seeing nothing but previews and tidbits of the show, not even a full episode of it.

Can someone confirm or deny any of those familiarities or were the previews I did see just misleading?

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

There was no similarities at all.

I am a huge Angel fan and I still loved Moonlight. The world is big enough for 2 vampires. LOL

I actually prefer the vampire mythos in Moonlight more than Angel.
It makes them seem much more real.

Along with Scott-S, I will deny those similarities. As an Angel fan, I would say you did yourself a disservice by not watching the show. I wouldn't say it was as good as Angel, but it was good for what it was. My wife watched a handful of Buffys, and never watched Angel that I can recall, but she loved Moonlight. I don't know how I'm going to inform her it was cancelled. (I saw a post on Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily yesterday, indicating that the CW might end up saving the show, but I wouldn't count on it.)

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

Nicholas, Can I assume from the last line in your post that you haven't even seen the show?

If so, I don't understand how you can call a show a ripoff of another. The only thing Angel and Moonlight have in common is the word Vampire. Nothing else is the same.

Even the Vampires are completely different than the ones in Angel.

By these standards, there can never be a another show made that contains vampires without you feeling it is just a ripoff.

I said that based on the following that looked familiar to me, based on previews and even a couple of scenes I looked at:

-Vampire gets close to a reporter who looks a lot like a detective on Angel (even mentioned in this thread)

-female who turned lead character into a vampire supposedly dead for years comes back, and may be a human? Sounds like Darla to me.

-sidekick/mentor figure who lives a bit of a wild life and has major issues of his own. Sounds like a more serious version of Doyle.

Obviously there can be many shows about vampires. Look at the short-lived "Kindred: The Embraced" from 1996, a show that was big into vampires and human police, and had no similarities to this, Buffy, Angel, Forever Knight, and was another interesting take.

Great show, and was supposed to be brought back on another network (FOX aired it, so you know what that meant) but the chance of that happening died along with the show's star vampire.

It's difficult to have a meaningful conversation when you know so little of the show. But I've seen every episode of Angel and every episode to date of Moonlight, and I have no hesitation in saying you're completely off-base.
  • The vampire doesn't just "get close" to the reporter. They have a long history together, the exploration of which has been a major plot arc of the season. If you'd watched even the pilot, you'd know that.
  • The vampire's former wife who returns is nothing at all like Darla. Above all, she returns on her own and for her own reasons, whereas Darla was brought back by Wolfram & Hart, and there is no Wolfram & Hart in Moonlight or anything like it. Indeed, the whole epic battle between good and evil that was the foundation of Angel is entirely absent in Moonlight. Its world is the cold and lonely universe of the hard-boiled detective story, but it just happens to include vampires.
  • Joseph and Doyle are not remotely similar. For starters, Doyle gets dropped on Angel's doorstep, whereas Joseph is Mick St. John's oldest friend. And Joseph doesn't have visions and has zero interest in his friend's involvement with the human world.
Now, I'm not saying you have to watch Moonlight or like it if you do. But please don't try to tell people who have actually watched the show what it is and isn't about.

Re: Moonlight cancelled

It is sad that Moonlight has been cancelled. The show is good. Too bad many of the CBS promos are so sucky. The problem with Fridays are that they aren't the ratings hit for many shows. Moonlight is a solid show that could hold an audience and maybe even grow in time.

For starters, I ASKED if the similarities I observed were true or not, and people, including yourself, said they weren't. Plain and simple.

How exactly is that telling anyone what the show is about?

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

I'm still having a hard time with the fact that it's been dropped, Mick St. John was the coolest, and most likable, vamp ever (to a degree even cooler than Angel who I loved also) and i'm really going to miss him and his exploits.

And when told that the similarities you observed did not exist, you insisted that they did and proceeded to itemize them, even though you admit you haven't watched a single episode of Moonlight in its entirety.

You can call that whatever you want. Let's just call it wrong -- plain and simple.

Re: Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight")

CBS TV executives do it again, cancelling another worthy show. No wonder "network" TV is in such a sad state with people like this in charge.

I really liked Moonlight and will miss it.
