Moonlight - season 1 thread (not quite a ripoff of "Forever Knight") - Page 2

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Well, he also produced Veronica Mars, and is apparently bringing Jason Dohring along - bizarrely, in the part originally played by Rade Serbedzija in the pilot.

Which is... odd. I wonder how much Greenwalt intends to retain from that pilot.

No, I just saw a few ads for it on TV. I'm sure Google will dig it up though.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Amber Valetta is out as Coraline, and Shannyn Sossamon is in. According to Zap2It.com:

Replacing Shannon Lucio as Beth Turner is...Sophia Myles:

And, finally, the ancient vampire Josef is being de-aged [in human form, LOL!]. Josef will now be played by Jason Dohring, replacing 60-year-old actor Rade Serbedzija in the presentation/pilot CBS had shown execs:

I guess David Greenwalt means business!

Looks like the only original cast member to survive is Alex O'Loughlin! [Now if only his character can get a new name! Mick doesn't work for me and seems close to "Nick", the vampire lead in FK!]

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Bringing Dohring on board actually makes this look a bit better to me.
On VM, he even had his Angel-like moments of sincerity that reminded me of early Buffy season 2.

Bizarre direction to go, changing the character THAT much.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Greenwalt's done this before - I remember when the pilot for Miracles was first picked up, it was described as a young priest who investigates potential miracles for the Catholic Church, and Hector Elizondo was in the regular cast. By the time Greenwalt was done reconfiguring it, he was a guest star in the first episode and Skeet Ulrich's character left the church.

Fortunately, as of right now, I like everyone who's come in quite a bit, but they're going to have to practically reshoot the entire pilot.

Just read about this too, I'm late on it I know. But I love VM and like Dohring's style a lot - I'm glad he's got a new show for next fall. He's a solid actor - Definitely means positive results for Moonlight.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

One thing to realize in discussing Greenwalt's changes, is that only a "presentation" style pilot was shot, 14-20 minutes, more like an extended trailer. Basically, it was enough to get the show ordered, but I doubt much of the original footage will ever actually make it to the air.

BUFFY had a 30 minute pilot presentation, which had a different actress playing Willow, different school principal, and no Angel, no Master, no Luke.

ANGEL was different - a 6 minute self-introduction which changed to a setup of the two core premises of the show - helping those in need, and the detective agency. Both premise setup scenes made their way almost verbatim into the actual pilot episode.

BONES was pretty much the same pilot broadcast with one significant change:
Agent Booth was fully aware of what happened to Bones' parents, whereas the broadcast version cut that out because it became a season-long plot thread that continues to this day.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I'm sorry, but the set-up for this show sounds way too much like Angel, I mean how could one not be constantly reminded of Angel when we have another show depicting a good vampire fighting crime in LA?

At this point it seems like an Angel ripoff to me, but i'll watch to see if it can find it's own flavour and voice.

I also don't get the title, I tend to associate the word 'moonlight' with werewolves rather than vampires.

I don't really get the title either, but I do remember early in the development season it was originally titled "Twilight." I assume it was changed to avoid confusion with a series of vampire novels by that name.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I just watched the On-Demand promo for this show and I did see a scene where the main character was outside in the day. He was in partial shade, but he did have direct sun on him in places.

Does this mean the vamp mythos of the show doesn't have sunlight hurt them?

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Maybe; there's enough versions where vampires just have no special powers during the day. I also kind of got the impression when I read some of the descriptions of the presentation that it's a quasi-SFnal take on the idea (more Blade than Buffy), so sunlight might just hurt rather than cause instantaneous combustion.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Well if this show is a rip-off of Angel. Then Angel was a rip-off of Forever Knight. Which is more like this show. A Vampire cop who wants to be human (or good) again.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I've seen enough of the promos. It's certainly got an ANGEL vibe to it, but in a half-assed way.

Greenwalt's not even on the show anymore, but apparently they're keeping the elements he put in place.

Either way, I won't be watching.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I'll be watching - my twin nieces are in it :-)

(playing the same character of course).

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Every show will inevitably get compared to a past or current show. I don't think it matters if it's reminiscent of Angel or Buffy or whatever if it's well written and well-played.
Give it a shot!
ps- Greenwalt left for health reasons- not b/c he didn't believe in the project...

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I know Greenwalt left for health issues, but I have even less of an incentive to watch now. They say they're keeping his ideas because they liked them, but who's naive enough to believe that when it's a new show that hasn't aired yet?

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

So it's got some baggage... I'm watching! Can't wait for tonight!!

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I'll be giving it a chance. Fridays are kind of light (show-wise) for me anyway. The only other shows I watch are also on CBS, so now I get 3 in a row tonight.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Not over yet but I like what i'm seeing so far, has a very different flavour than Angel which will help set it apart for me. I also like how Mick is only mildly put off by sunlight, I think this is the first time i've seen a vampire show or movie debunk the sunlight=death myth.

I've never heard of this Sophia Myles girl before now but for the love of Zeus she's gorgeous, i'm totally smitten. Very Kate Winslet, she even sounds like Kate when she does American accents.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

The acting in this is terrible though.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I don't know, I thought the acting was alright. I liked the pilot and this Mick St. John is definitely one cool customer.

Can't wait to see more of this show and of Sophia Myles.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

If you want to see more of Sophia Myles, check out "Art School Confidential"...

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Yep, already added to my queue, Patrick, checked out her bio on IMDB as soon as the show ended lol.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I recognized Sophia from Underworld 1, thought that was clever casting.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

She was also in one of the best episodes of Doctor Who last year.

As to this show... I'll give it another shot next week, since it won't be conflicting with Las Vegas and is thus easily DVR-able. It's not really what you'd call good yet, but I've got some hope - the Pate brothers (late of Surface) seem to be involved, and Shannyn Sossamon's Coraline looks like a good, insane antagonist when she inevitably shows up in the present.

I agree. Awful performances by most of the cast.

I also find the potential romantic link-up to be creepy since Mick has acted as kind of a father-figure/guardian to her (albeit from afar) since rescuing her from the other vampire. They may not be related, but the back story still presents an incestuous vibe.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

Thats the way I felt about Angel and Buffy. It just felt wrong to me.

Did anyone else feel like the cut scenes were exactly the same as the ones used in Angel? I am referring to the Helicopter city shots, and quick, sped up, cutting used to transition from one scene to the next. They did the exact same thing on Angel.

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

This was middling as I'd rather be watching Joseph than Mick on this show. But I'll continue to record it for weekend viewing since not much else is on on Friday nights (though Friday Night Lights will get my live viewing in that timeslot).

Re: New CBS show "Moonlight" a ripoff of "Forever Knight"?

I just watched this.
I didn't plan on it, but decided to give it a try.
I thought most of the characters were flat and uninteresting.
I like Sophia(loved her in Doctor Who's "Girl in a Fireplace" The best doctor who next to "Blink")

I hated the beginning interview part.

I kind off got the Sin City, rescue the little girl then fall in love with her vibe.

It was nice to see Dohring and Kevin Weisman again

But I still want to give this a chance, as it may get better down the road.
