Streaming Audio

I have a Linksys music bridge that I use to stream MP3 music into my living room. The problem is that it frequently crashes. I reboot of my computer usually fixes it, so that leads me to think it is the software causing the problem. I am using the music match software (free version) that came with the bridge.

Is there another program I can use to send music to my bridge that would be more stable?

Re: Streaming Audio

I don't think the program needs to be Musicmatch, it just needs to be a music server. Does anyone know of a good, stable music server program that I could try?

Re: Streaming Audio

Well, the Slim Devices server is a great one and it does stream MP3's (or indeed just about any format can be converted to MP3 on the fly.) It's freeware and I use it all the time to stream music.

You can find it at http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html

It's made for their Squeezebox hardware player, but you can stream music off it to any Shoutcast capable bit of software too.

I use the Foobar2000 player to stream the music on; the controls are on a web page that the server runs. Foobar2000 is a very light-weight, high quality player, I've left it streaming for days on end with no problems. In fact I frequently just leave it running in streaming mode and stop the music using the Slimserver stop button on the web page.

But basically, you download the server for your chosen operating system on the page above and install it, on a machine that has access to your MP3 collection (or indeed has it stored.) Then you start the server, do some basic setup and point it at your MP3's and have it index them.

After that, you just start Foobar2000 or Winamp or whatever you want to use to stream the music and connect to http://your.server.ip.address:9000/stream.mp3 and then you can just go to http://your.server.ip.address:9000 to get to the web interface where you can select songs, play them back, browse your music collection etc etc. Very cool stuff.

Takes a bit of setting up, but shouldn't be insurmountable by any means.

I'm not sure how the Linksys device works, but if it works by redirecting the output from a program to the device using software on the PC then it should work fine for this.

Re: Streaming Audio

I have a Linksys music bridge and I've never had a problem using iTunes. I think you can also use Windows Media Player. Actually, anything will work...even QuickTime.
