Thanks for the suggestion Ben. That one looks good to me. Now I just need to save up for it.

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

I am in Omaha, NE. I went back there today and they have not restocked. All that is left is the display model. So either I got the last one, or the only one. Either way, I feel special.

I would suggest going down there and looking for yourself.

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

A little bit of an update. After watching a couple of more movies, POTC: DMC and Ghost Rider on Blu-Ray, I noticed that the bass is somewhat muted when running the audio through digital optical cable. It's there, just not very powerful, requiring you to turn it up to full reference volume to get somewhat of a punch. I checked my setting and everything looks ok. Just to be safe, I tried playing one of my HD-DVDs and the bass was fine, so it can't be the subwoofer. Anyone else notice this with their Panasonic players? I went ahead and ordered the Zektor HDS4.1 switcher so that I can try out the lossless audio tracks using the analog output. Should recieve it next week. I'll report back after doing more testing.

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

Ben, I know I am a little late coming to this thread, but it looks like I am going to have to replace my Samsung a little sooner than I planned (an accident with a glass of water and my five year old grand daughter.)

What is the general concensus on the new Panny.

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

Bummer-

though the Panny seems like a great player all things considered... except (if I understand correctly) it still doesn't do DTS-HD MA. Does anyone know if there's a player announced/on the horizon that will?

I was really hoping to wait until the third gen players hit late this year, but my darling Grand daughter has forced the issue. As far as DTS-HD MA support, I have not seen any players that currently support it which is a shame.

So now my Sammy gets it's resting place next to my many defunct Video Game systems and my Pioneer Elite LD/DVD player. May it rest in peace .

Actually, the Sammy has been acting up the last few weeks, so all in all, it might all be for the best. I just hate spending the $600.00 right now, but I also cannot be without my BD player.

If this BD player might be more of a "hold over" unit, what about the new lower-priced Sony model?

While I normally do not buy Sony Electronics (some very bad experiences), I did seriously consider it. This may sound silly, but the biggest turn off to me was the blue front face. I just cannot not picture it next to all of my other components.

I had the same problem with the Tosh XA1. I was glad the the XA2 came out with a completely black front face and was able to retire the Black and Silver XA1.

It is looking like the Panasonic is probably the way I will go, and assume that I will be looking to upgrade it sometime next year.

Thanks for the input.

The new Sony has my eye actually if it does indeed decode Dolby True HD???? The price is better although some say it's a re-badged Samsung??

Thomas:

Sorry to hear of the waterworks but I'm jealous that you get to blame the reason you HAVE to buy a new BD player on your daughter.

It is always nice to have someone to blame when I buy something I really want.

BTW, I have pulled the trigger and ordered the Panny through Value Electronics.

If it is, it would be the new Samsung, which is a great unit. I would have picked up the second gen Samsung but it was $200.00 more than the second gen Panny.

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

I thought about the Sony, but even at $100 less than the Panny there is no way one could score 5 BD movies and make up the difference. Glowing user reviews of the 1st gen Panny, the instant BD library with the new unit, and the deep price cut cinched the deal for me. Looking forward to firing this one up in the Cave. I haven't yet seen the new Pirates film, so I may do a Jack Sparrow marathon with the Panny and then go catch the 3rd film.

I don't know. The first 2 POTC on BD are marvels to behold. They are that good, even though I never cared much for POTC 2. After viewing POTC3 this last weekend, doubt I will be buying it when it comes out. It was about 90 min. too long.....

Hey Thomas...congrats on the new Panny - you are going to love it!

As far as the consensus on the new Panny, it is roughly equivalent to the previous model - - they are actually the exact same player with the new one adding an "a" to the model number. From what I understand, the previous model had a BD burner for a drive where this one is just a BD-ROM. That's what has driven the cost down. Fear not, though, Thomas... the Panny behaves like a 3rd gen unit. It is fast and free of any known bugs. I've never had even the slightest hiccup with mine.

Let us know how it all turns out! I think you'll be impressed with the picture and will definitely see it as an upgrade over the Sammy!

Ben, thanks for the comments. I am very much looking forward to receiving the Panny from Value Electronics as soon a Robert Zohn get's them in stock.

While I would have liked to hold onto the Sammy for a few more months, I am not too upset by it, as the Sammy was starting to show it's age. I must say that the Sammy has been a fine machine and I can find little to complain about the player. It always did what it was supposed too.

Maybe one known bug or at least an oddity that nobody so far can explain.

DVD discs in "LOTR:Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition" will not play. The discs aren't recognized by the player. So far multiple folks have reported this at least with Firmware up to 2.2 and I haven't heard of anyone the discs would play. The Theatrical cut plays and apparently the other EE's play fine, but not Fellowship EE?

That's odd... I just popped in my copy of the fellowship EE and it is currently playing without any kind of problem...

So, I guess it doesn't effect all players.

My Panny will be only used for BD playback, so that should not be a problem for me. My Tosh XA2 will continue to hold top position for and SD DVD's I want to play. It is one fine uoconverting player.

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

Interesting, mine wouldn't play at 2.0 or 2.2. A lot of BD10 folks have reported this problem previously and a number of the BD10a players still refuse to even recognize the disc. I haven't heard of another disc that exhibits this problem.

My A2 and 3 SD DVD's recognize the EE without any problem so I'm sure it's not the disc. What video setting/output resolution are you using?

Software V.2.2 1080p via HDMI (obviously).

Sound sent via analog output. Maybe using HDMI for sound causes the problem? I have that disabled on mine. It's odd... I halfway expected the player to sputter and make some horrible sound when I tried to play the disc... the good news, is that I haven't watched the extended edition in ages. I'm now an hour and a half into it and am loving every second!

Just for fun:

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

Tried with the HDMI Sound off and still I get a "No Read" using HDMI Auto, HDMI 720, HDMI 480p, switched to Component only and still nothing at any Video setting. Same goes for all 4 discs of the set, none of the discs will even begin to load.

No problems with FOTR Theatrical release or the other Extended Editions.

That's so strange! I just finished the second disc and the whole thing played flawlessly.

Have you turned off the player sounds?

Re: New Panasonic DMP-BD10a Announcement - $599 - 5 free BDs

Yep, tried with Player sounds off. I didn't think that would help a lot b/c it's not like it loads the disc and then stops/freezes/locks up, the disc never even gets recognized as a DVD which is pretty much what most of the reports say.

I'm guessing a set of production discs has some sort of odd encoding that the player doesn't recognize of some players just have trouble. Since it only seems to affect this one specific DVD so far as I know I'm guessing it's something specific related to these discs.
