Windows XP won't start up

Thread Starter
This started yesterday. Windows gets into a boot-up loop and gives me a choice of booting normally, from the last good configuration, or in several types of Safe mode. None work; I always gets back to the same screen.

I haven't recently installed any new hardware or software so I don't think that's the problem. The hard drive is relatively new (about a year or so) and I don't think that's causing the problem either.

Every so often, prior to this, the PC (IBM Net Vista) would get hung or respond very slowly and the only thing I could do to get out of that was to power off and then power on the PC. My wife said she did this right before the boot loop started happening.

There isn't a whole lot of irreplaceable data on the hard drive so it wouldn't be that big of a problem to reformat/reinstall if that's what's necessary.

I was wondering, before I try that, if there's anything else to try first. Thanks!

Re: Windows XP won't start up

It could be many things, but my guess would be bad sectors on the drive. Since you can't even boot to safe mode; that guess doesn't help you. If you can boot, even in safe mode, do a scan disk which will turn off the bad sectors. Then if you're lucky the bad sector will be in the swap area.

If you want to save what you can, uinstall the disk on another PC and try the scan disk. If you don't care that much, then go with the reformat, which also checks for bad sectors.

And, while it's a long shot, before doing any of that try reseating the cables.
