Website Hosting?

The humane rescue group that I volunteer for, may need to relocate from its current server and find a new host. I'm asking for recommendations for a good hosting service. FuRR is not a rich organization, so we are looking for the best bang for the buck.

We'd need at least 2 domains and some email addresses. I've not been in charge of the current server, so I don't yet have the info on our bandwidth usage. Hope to get that in a couple of days.

BTW, we are located in Little Rock, AR.

Re: Website Hosting?

Avoid 1and1.com. I'm using them for my Camera Club site and the server is VERY slow.

Re: Website Hosting?

For about $80, you can get StartLogic to host. I've used them for about 5 years now, and with only a couple of minor quibbles, I've been satisfied with them TONS of webspace for the price, since I am working on a low budget start up videography on the side thingie....

Is that $80 per year? How has the response time been? What's their url?

Edit: I meant to mention that on another thread elsewhere 1and1 was recommended.

Re: Website Hosting?

I have been extremely happy with Lunarpages I have been with them for several years, in fact I have two accounts with them (wanted two different IP addresses).

You get:

350 GB of storage
3,500 GB/month of bandwidth
Free domain names for life
You can host up to 10 sites on one account
Unlimited email accounts
and lots of other goodies.
Cost is $6.95 a month.

Their customer service is superb, I really have absolutely zero negative things to say about them.

Re: Website Hosting?

Just my $0.02, but I am always leery of services which promise things there is absolutely no possible way they can provide, like 350GB of space and 3,500 GB of bandwidth for $6.95/mo. There is just no way, besides, you don't need it.

I have been with a few hosts over the years and the current one (last 3+ years) is the only one which has never changed hands and done all sorts of other crap. Their uptime is excellent and their service is decent. It could be better, but I think it is more than can be expected for the price. They have a very basic plan which includes up to 500MB, 5 GB bandwidth, 5 domains, 10 POP3 emails and other stuff like server side spam filtering for $60/year. So that would handle both your sites on the $60/year. You can see the plan Here.

They can offer that much space and bandwidth because they know that 95% of all the users will never use that much.

I had one of my sites get Digged and I used over 2,000 gigs of traffic for the month and the system never even hiccuped. My site routinely uses 20-30 gigs of traffic every month, far from the alloted amount available, but it's nice knowing I have that cushion if needed. As for disc space I have had over 100 gigs of stuff on my site at points (uploading stuff for friends to download) and never had a problem.

Lunarpages has been around a long time, they have never changed hands since I have been with them and the only changes they have made to my account since I started was upgrading the amount of bandwidth, server space they offer and other upgrades. Lunarpages also offers a forum that you can use before you become one of their customers, a rarity in the business.

Lunarpages is the 5th or 6th hosting company I have been with and they are easily the best that I have used.

Avoid nexpoint like the plague, they were by far the worst I have ever used and their customer service is pathetic.

Hostgator is another good company. I have also heard nothing but good things about asmallorange but I have no personal experience with them.

Re: Website Hosting?

Well Chris, until you, every single one of these places I have heard about cut off accounts well before reaching their advertised bandwidth. Maybe they are the exception to the rule.

I am not familiar with expression "Digged".

Re: Website Hosting?

I once was "slashdotted".

As for providers, how about godaddy.com? Yes, the commercials are VERY "breastaking" ( ) , but the service does work. And for $4 per month for the economy plan (minimum 2 months), it's a quick way to set up a Web site without being stuck in a long term commitment. If it doesn't work out, simply cancel and go somewhere else.

Hosting plans as listed on GoDaddy:

Economy: $3.99/month
• 5 GB Space
• 250 GB Transfer
• 500 Email Accounts
• FREE! Software
• 10 MySQL Databases
• 50 Email Forwards
• Forums, Blogging, Photos
• Metropolis Hosting Community

Deluxe: $6.99/month
• 100 GB Space
• 1,000 GB Transfer
• 1,000 Email Accounts
• Unlimited Web sites
• FREE! Software
• 25 MySQL Databases
• Unlimited Email Forwards
• Forums, Blogging, Photo Galleries
• Metropolis Hosting Community
• $25 Google® AdWords® Credit

Premium: $14.99/month
• FREE! SSL Certificate, $19.99 value!
• 200 GB Space
• 2,000 GB Transfer
• 2,000 Email Accounts
• Unlimited Web sites
• FREE! Software
• 50 MySQL Databases
• Unlimited Email Forwards
• Forums, Blogging, Photos
• Metropolis Hosting Community
• $25 Google® AdWords® Credit

I currently have the economy plan because it suits my needs perfectly without breaking the bank. And I've yet to see my site go down.

slashdotted, another term I'm not familiar with. As for commercials, they would not be acceptable. We would not want visitors to our site distracted from our message.

Re: Website Hosting?

Francois was talking about GoDaddy's TV commercials.

As far as the "digged" comment, I suspect he was referring to some sort of bandwidth drain. People will do various things for no other reason than to be a pain to others. I had a recent incident where an image was being loaded a few thousand times an hour. I could see no reason to do it, other than to be an ass. It wasn't a hotlink or anythink productive I could see. Anyway, it was sucking up bandwidth at the rate of about 2GB per hour.

Re: Website Hosting?

Lunarpages +1

My site's bandwidth reached 29 gigs last month and I had zero hiccups. I, like Moe, have been through half-a-dozen+ hosts and Lunarpages has been the best. Check out webhostingtalk.com and you'll be hard pressed to find many negative reviews about LP.

Media Temple is the only other host I'll recommend because my company uses them all the time to set up accounts for clients. Very nice control panel they got, not to mention they use a "Grid Server" system of hosting for better reliability.

GoDaddy has the worst CP I've ever seen and one client I had while I was freelancing said they hated GD's hosting service. I switched them over to Lunarpages and they've had no problems since.

Good luck!

Re: Website Hosting?

Being Digged means that your page makes it to the front page of www.digg.com and when that happens you can a huge influc of traffic. It's the same effect as being slashdotted.

If digg.com and slashdot.com find your page and people like it you can expect a ton of traffic coming your way. Both of these have been known to bring pages down because the servers cant handle all the traffic or people go over their alloted bandwidth.

Re: Website Hosting?

Bump. I'm looking for an alternative to GoDaddy now. I LOVE their customer service but my uploads to them are very very slow. Anyone have good current recommendations?

Re: Website Hosting?

Sam, I've used http://www.futurequest.net for 10 years. Customer service is outstanding....e-mail questions are answered within 10 minutes usually, never more than 20 minutes. Their servers are speedy and reliable.

I would also recommend pair Networks - World Class Web Hosting

I signed up with them for a site before futurequest rolled out a budget priced package and they've also been outstanding. No complaints.

Re: Website Hosting?

I have used e-rice now for a year with out any issues. For $10 per year I think it is a great deal.
