James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

Has there been any discussion of releasing a few of the older 007 films on Blu Ray in 2007? I would think it would help further the format.

I've held off getting into the new formats as I'm waiting for more titles and well for the dust to settle too. : )

It already looks like Casino Royale will be released again in 2008. Both DVD and Blu Ray? The disc was short on extras, trailers and of course audio commentaries.

Thanks for posting!

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

I've heard/read no rumors about the Bond films coming this year on BD FWIW.

If they show up great, but I'd be very surprised.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

they just had the remastered DVDs last xmas.

I would expect the blu-ray versions of the Bonds around the release of the next Bond movie in the winter of '08. Casino Royale has been a big hit BD-wise and Sony will get the other Bonds to HD between now and Bond 22.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

They need to re-work some of the film masters first!!

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

Actually, wouldn't it be Fox getting the other Bonds to BD? I think the new DVD editions were Fox-branded, since they're the ones distributing MGM product now.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

Whether it's Sony or Fox (and it is the latter) is irrelevant - MGM makes the decision to release them. Fox is just the distributor.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

Considering that a remastered title like Spy Who Lved Me showed the exact same sins in the exact same places as the earlier plain SE release (halos EE in the first half of the film, lessening in the second, etc) I'm wondering if not all the films were given the 'deluxe' 4K remastering treatment. There are remarkable similarities between the earlier SE release and the new CE, and the only differences between could have easily been on account of manipulation of the existing digtal master (contrast boosting, etc).
Some of the early films look clearly better, but some of the later (and less popular) don't display near the same care or quality.

Its a shame but when they eventually do hit Bd- which seems like at least another year and 1/2 off- that these are the masters they will be using. In the case of Goldfinger and Thunderball and Dr No, that's not a problem- but for some of the others like Spy, it will just mean it will be that much longer before a proper version is released

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

For HD would Lowry (now DTS) have to complete new mastering work for the films?

I'm hoping the new Casino Royale (3 disc dvd version) and the other Bond films are released on Blu Ray in 2008.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray

It was stated that Lawry had the original camera negatives for all of the Connery films. Beyond those I don't know if Lawry did the scans or if they were just given digital files to work on.

Cool. How did the films look on the MGM HD channel?

I'm really hoping all the films come to blu ray disc in 2008!

Although MGM makes the decision, I'm afraid it will matter whether it's Sony or Fox. At least to my pocketbook!

Sony tends to price BDs at $24.99 (available $19.95 on Amazon) while Fox tends to price them at $34.99 ($27.95 on Amazon). Multiply that by the number of Bond films...yikes!

Yes. That part definitely matters, and unfortunately it's Fox as distributor.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

Sony BD's are actually 18.96$ at my local Wally, which is very nice

Fox pricing is not that bad in some cases, I got the Die Hard Quad set for around 75$ online, I think it will be safe to say that the Bonds will be sets as well

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

When the Bond films do show up (hopefully in November) I'm sure they will do box sets again for the films. makes the most sense.

I hope they also do the 3 disc version of Casino Royale (2006) which is coming to DVD this year, will also come to Blu Ray.

New DVD Edition Of 'Casino Royale' To Reportedly Contain Three Discs - James Bond 007 - CommanderBond.net - James Bond At Its Best

I'm hoping for more extras on the other Bond films as well. Mainly interested in more deleted scenes and promotion ads (tv, radio and trailers). I'm a bit puzzled why some of the current dvd's have many ads for some films and hardly any for others..

I do like many of the new DVD features. Great stuff.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

I originally was not going to add any more Bond DVD's to my collection because I want them in HD. But after seeing the remastered DVD's with DTS for $9.99 I was week and purchased a few of them. But that does not change the fact that I would like to own ever single James Bond movie in HD! I guess we will have to wait and see if the Bond titles get the DTS treatment or will they get uncompress PCM? Ultimantly it should all be good as long as we get lossless, I will be happy.

20+ Bond Movies would look great in my HDM collection.

I have bought them all SO many times: VHS (letterboxed), laserdisc, the original MGM few and then the special editions. I have selectively bought some of the Ultimate Editions (all the Connerys, a couple of Moores, the one Lazenby).

But when they come out on Blu-ray, I'll no doubt buy them again. [sigh]

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

I would be suprised to see these this early in the format. I bet they want to wait until more players are out. These are also releases that scream for 2.0 interactivity, and with 20+ titles that will take time. Like others here I have double/triple/quad dipped on these too many times (VHS, LD, DVD 2x), so I hope they do the first BD release right so these will be must buys.

Also check out that the new 007 Monster Box with all Bond films DTS remastered AND the 2nd disc for each film plus 2 books was selling at Costco ~ 2 months ago for $129. Of course I bought one....

Christ, that's a great price. What, like six bucks per title? I'm checking my local Costco(s) tomorrow, but I imagine they're all gone.

I can't wait for the first wave of these comes to blu Ray. i'm sure they will be out in October just before Quantum of Solace comes to theaters 11-7-08.

I was thinking the exact same thing - either that or they'll release some/all of them whenever Quantum of Solace comes to DVD/BD.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

Has anyone heard any further news on Bond on Blu Ray?

I posted in the Standard DVD forum as well in the thread there.

At the end of each Bond film on the UE's there is credits for the Lowry mastering. I believe only the first 9 films were given a 4K scanned transfer.

I am curious if they would rescan the later ones for Blu ray.

I will be very happy for a start already if they bring out the Connery Bonds.

When the big public starts buying into BD, these are titles that simply need to be on the shelves already, IMO.
(Among several others, BTW.)
Currently, many people trying to decide to jump on the new format's wagon, are not extremely impressed when they look around in the HDM sections of the stores.

I'll agree with this with the added stipulation regarding the price.

I used to love to go into Best Buy or Target and look through their entire dvd inventory. Maybe find something I could get at a good deal, etc.

Now I still go around and look, but perusing their Blu-Ray inventories is just sad. Bad enough there just is not a large catalog of titles out in the stores, but when looking at the prices and the minimum I see is $24.95 with the majority at $29.99, and Fox's at $34.95, there's just no way I can bring myself to buy any titles in a brick and mortar shop.

The lack of catalog is obviously due to the format war and studios hedging bets or unsure of what format to choose, so time will now change that. I just hope the price follows suit. I can understand paying a bit more for the better medium, but not double. Time will most likely affect this as well, as it did when SD-DVD first come out, but until that time I'll look to save my money by buying online. That's where the real catalog of titles is currently at anyway.

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

I posted this in the standard DVD forums, but thought it was relevant to the Blu Ray thread as well...

I made a somewhat curious discovery in the credits for the mastering on the James Bond films. Previously I had believed the first 9 films had been scanned at 4K by Lowry / DTS Imaging. However, I have now found that the first 8 films have a 4K Film Scanning credit. The Man With The Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me do not have 4K Film Scanning credits, rather they are given Video Masters credits. Moonraker however does have a 4K Film Scanning credit. I know believe that the first 8 were scanned at 4K (Dr. No - Live and Let Die) as well as Moonraker. However, The Man With The Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me appear not to have been scanned at 4K.

The remaining films after Moonraker all list a Video Masters credit.

The Lowry credits appear at the conclusion of each films End Credits.

Can anyone confirm what I have found?

Am I correct that the films listed with 4K Scanning credits were done at 4K while the other films have only Video Masters credits meaning they were not scanned at 4K?

Could this be a possible explanation of the haloing and EE on The Spy Who Loved Me? Or is it another reason, possibly the DVD authoring?

Lastly, would the films not scanned at 4K need to be redone for a Blu Ray release?

It would have been nice to have ALL films receive the same treatment.

Overall I am very very happy with the UE DVD's. I'm really looking forward to Blu Ray. I am now wondering though if a Blu Ray release is another year away? 2009 maybe?

Thanks for posting!

Re: James Bond 007 films on Blu Ray?

If that's the case I'll be happy with the first 8 films on BD in the near future and can wait for the rest.

Hopefully before the Bonds make it out MGM adopts a policy that ports over all bonus content. Bare-bones Bond BD's would really piss me off.

My understanding was that all of the Connery film's were scanned from the original camera negatives by Lowry at 4K. That is Dr. No through Diamonds are Forever with On Her Majesty's Secret Service thrown in for good measure. In my opinion of the pre 1980 films these look by far the best now.

Beyond that I believe it is hit or miss as to the elements that Lowry had to work with. Some films they seem to have been given digital files to clean up and others they were given best available elements. I know for Golden Eye for instance they were given a print that was prepared for producing a Pan and Scan video. If you watch the opening title sequence and compare it to the original DVD release, you can see that all the titles have been shifted into the TV safe area and the image has been cropped in slightly to help make details show up better on small TVs. This was very common and is still done when preparing Pan and Scan versions.

The point being that Lowry did all the clean up, IE dirt and dust removal and color correction, but as far as I know they only had the original negatives on the first 7 films.

It would be nice to see Lowry have a crack at the original negatives of all the films seeing what a great job they did with the first 7, however that would probably delay the release of the later films onto blu-ray by several years.
