Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

How can Fox Veto releases, Fox distributes MGM/UA titles and that's it. MGM can veto releases and what not.

I don't understand something ... if MGM/Fox can release the complete series of The Addams Family then why can't they do the same with Green Acres??? Both shows were from the same time period and between the two Green Acres was the most popular one back in their hay days.

Yes but Green Acres didn't have 2 movies in the 90's to attract new fans.

Actually Green Acres did have a movie in the 90s. It was called Return to Green Acres which reunited most of the cast of the series.

Popularity 40 or more years ago does not translate into what is popular or going to sell better today. Beverly Hillbillies was a huge hit when it was on, scoring some of the greatest ratings ever for regular series episodes at one point. Far more popular than just about any other 60s sitcom and all we've seen released are 2 sets from MPI of the PD episodes. Also, look at the ratings from that era and see how many times The Danny Thomas Show was in the Top 10. Now, when the show reruns it's ratings death.

Green Acres gets enough eyeballs to keep it on TVLand.

Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

"The Beverly Hillbillies" didn't only get "some" of the highest ratings ever -- it holds the all-time record (and always will) for the highest rated regular episodes of a series.

We can't compare a Complete Series set between "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres," seeing as how the first ran only two seasons and "Green Acres" ran six. However, it would be nice if all series were released as Complete Sets to begin with, so we wouldn't end up with so many incomplete series.

Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

Not to hijack this thread, but the biggest travesty in all of TV on Dvd releases is that the Beverly Hillbillies is not out in season sets. I think that MPI's sets more than anything may have hurt the series chances of ever being released that way. With MPI releasing almost all of the first season, Paramount may feel that fans may not want to double dip for the first season, which is hindering them from getting any of the seasons out. The Beverly Hillbillies is my favorite comedy of all time; no show has ever made me laugh as much, and it hurts me that I don't have access to the show on dvd.

I agree Doug. It's strange how something can be so big in its time and so nothing as the years go by.

Now that I'm watching them again on TV Land, I see it's another series where the black and white shows (the first three seasons) are better than the color ones. Being black and white doesn't help its chances much.

Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

Oh! I do really wish Green Acres will come back to continue the season sets, and
I really wish The Beverly Hillbillies will continue the volume sets (like the Addams Family went by volume set rather than season sets) I remember Vol 1 &2 of Beverly Hillbillies but it stopped I wonder why the stopped?? To the henning family PLEASE!! continue the vol. sets or start a season sets pleasse!! ): I want my Beverly Hillbillies!!

Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

It was our understanding that the Henning family only owned the first two seasons. The rest is up to Viacom or whoever.

Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

I thought all The Beverly Hillbillies episodes released by MPI were PD. Working with the Henning estate allowed them to access the family's copies of those episodes, and all those extras.

Perhaps it's the PD status of those episodes that's preventing Paramount from releasing them.

Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

Episodes #2 through #54 of THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES are in the public domain. The broadcast version of the show's pilot is still under copyright, as are all episodes from #55 on. Paramount owns the negatives for these public domain episodes, as well as rights to the series overall. The Henning family holds no rights to either THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES or PETTICOAT JUNCTION. As Mr. Tucker said, they merely provided MPI access to Henning's collection of 16mm air prints, and to certain bonus materials.

Re: Green Acres? - Not a bang but a whimper

I know this is probably a dead horse, but is there any news about season 4-6 of Green Acres showing up on DVD? TV Land has been running through the entire series since the beginning of the year so I am capturing them on my Tivo, but I would like to get them on DVD (with intact end credits and no "bugs" in the corner of the screen).

I am very interested in the remaining seasons of Green Acres on DVD, and would definitely purchase them.
