Please don't laugh at this one

Hey guys,

I have really been enjoying my new TV, it makes movies and HD TV so much fun. I just purchased the new Sony KDS-55A2020 and couldn't be happier. I can't wait to eventually get a HD or Blu Ray DVD player, but that is another story.

In the meantime, I have purchased an upconverting DVD player and while not as crisp as the new formats, still quite impressed with the quality. This has caused me to revisit some DVD's that I haven't seen in a while.

Now for the silly question, some movies just don't fill the screen. In Normal Mody they are widescreen, but more like picture framed. When I use the TV to zoom in the aspect ratio changes slightly. Does this mean those movies are non Anamorphic? (Original Office Space, Criterion Spinal Tap, etc).

I look forward to your answers.

Have a great Tuesday!

That is correct. Those DVDs are not anamorphic which makes them be windowboxed on the normal setting on your TV.

You know, I checked the digital bits website's anamorphic guide and it explained it clearly to a slow learner like myself.

If you look on the back of dvd case they might say if they are non animorphic or not.

That might help future purchases.

Just for the OP or others, this is not always clear either. Often it may say "enhanced for widescreen TVs" or other such unclear terminology. And in other cases it may say nothing even if it is actually anamorphic.

Most titles these days are Anamorphic, thank goodness. But, tragically, there are still a few movie gems that can only be found as letterboxed 4:3 (i.e. "The Twilight Samurai").
