what do you guys wear, how did you select them?

I've been told that I have a wide face at the temples, and need a somewhat wide frame. Suggestions?

Thanks!!

Re: I need glasses!

I was about 40 when I needed glasses. I usually use Lenscrafters because of the quick turn around. They usually have coupons available in Sunday newspaper inserts and mailings.

As for looks, try on different frames in the store. If you have a decent salesperson, they should be able to provide some advice on what looks best.

BTW, with Lenscrafters, they guarantee satisfaction. If they didn't get the prescription right or the doctor changes the prescription because you didn't like it, they will redo at no charge. There's probably a time limit on this, but not sure what it is.

BTW, expect not to be totally happy when first trying out the lenses, you have to get used to them. I also find I prefer the progressives, which are basically bifocals without the visible differences in the grinding of the lenses. Bifocals hurt my eyes. Of course progressives cost more.

For looks, go with a woman. this applies to shopping for clothing and the like.

Re: I need glasses!

One thing to consider when getting glasses is how active you are (mountain climber or couch potato) as some glasses are made to stay on better if you are very active verses if you are less active. Another is if you need them all the time or just for reading or just when you are driving.

If they are glasses to be worn all the time it will certainly take some getting used to and a good idea, though it can make it more expensive, is to get the lightest frame and lenses possible so that it's not as much a bother.

Re: I need glasses!

Pearle Vision's website allows you to uplaod a face shot of yourself so you can "try on" all their virtual glasses to see what you may look like.

How about contacts?

Re: I need glasses!

I'll definitely go w/ a woman. great idea!

couldn't stand contacts - I can't even go near my own eyes w/o wincing.

Do transitions really do the same job as sunglasses? do they get dark enough reliably and consistently? or would you recommend buying a seperate pair of sunglasses?

much difference between the designer brands and the Luxottica brands, or even no names, other than price?

And did you guys go for the full tinting package? anti glare, anti scratch, etc?

Re: I need glasses!

One thing I do when I get a new prescription for my glasses is I wait until I wake up in the morning before wearing them. I find the transition a lot easier then taking off the old ones and putting on the new ones right away. I wear rimless glasses with progressive lenses. It took awhile to used to the progressives but I like them.

Re: I need glasses!

Here's my story: I've been wearing glasses for 20+ years. I get new frames every few years and I've NEVER liked any of my frames, until recently...

Everytime I get new glasses, I also get a 2nd pair of prescription sunglasses. I'd always go a little conservative on the regular glasses and a little more sporty on the sunglass frames.

About 4 years ago, they had these really cool looking Nike sunglass frames that are super flexible (i.e. Nike Flexon)! Well, I LOVED my sunglasses. I loved them so much that when I updated my prescription, I wanted to change my regular frames to the Nike sunglass frames. I was a little hesitant because these frames are frameless underneath the lenses (i.e. the metal only goes over the top of the lenses), but the salesman said they would work just fine as regular glasses.

This is the first time in YEARS that I've ever liked my regular glass frames. I never thought about using sunglass frames (or what they typically use for sunglasses) as my regular frames, but that did the trick!

Definitely see if you can find the Nike prescription lenses. They rock!

Gas Permeable contact lenses.

I only wear glasses when I must.

Re: I need glasses!

Here's everything I know on the subject:

To see if they fit your face, check to see that each pupil is centered in its respective eyeglass lens.

There. That's all I know.

Oh yeah...welcome to the club, Four-Eyes.

Re: I need glasses!

Since I'm primarily a contact lens wearer, I chose glasses pretty much within 5 minutes of shopping and chose a pair that my eye plan would cover and nothing more...

Re: I need glasses!

Three things:
1.) I would also go for the anti-scratch. It won't prevent scratching but there will be minor wispy scratches which otherwise appear as major dents if you don't have it.
2.) If the transitions don't turn dark enough for you, drop the cash for a prescription pair of sunglasses especially if you drive alot. Or like me, driving into the sunrise on the way to work and into the sunset on the way home - at least during the summer months. During the winter, there is no sun either way.
3.) If you are active and will need your glasses to see, make sure you have the attachable leash (I don't know what they're called, I'm blind without my glasses ) Or it may be worth it to buy a second pair for emergencies. Depends on how accident-prone or forgetful you are.

Otherwise welcome to the club!

Re: I need glasses!

Definitely bring a woman. My wife always picks out my frames. Of course, I can't see myself clearly when trying frames on anyway.

Get the scratch restant coating, and UV coating if you are outside a lot.

As for sunglasses, where I get them, they sell the hook-on sunglasses pieces that will fit over your frames (some more expensive brands include them with purchase, and some brands are magnetic rather than padded hooks). Theses are not the geeky clip-on versions from yesteryear. I've been using those for about 4 years now. I think they run about $40. It's easier to slide them on and off than to fumble around trying to switch glasses, and much less expensive.

Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention I've been wearing glasses since I was 6.

Re: I need glasses!

I like the Flexon frames. I am clumsy and am always bumping my glasses. They used to bend and once they bend, they never fit right. You can't bend the Flexons and they fit nicely. YOu can twist the hell out of them and they bend right back.

EDIT: Here's my pair:

I have a pair of Nike flexons on my face at this very moment in time. Mine have metal all the way round the lens though and they have magnetic clip-ons.

They, as you say, rock.

My tactic with glasses is the same as with buying a tie. As an ineffectual and incompetent shopper, I try to find a female or gay male shop assistant and ask them.

Nike Flexon? Sounds like a relative of mine!!!

=========================

The only things I'd add to the discussion is:

Sure...bring a woman. But also make sure it's a woman with a reasonable fashion sense (one close to yours). That probably goes without saying...but I thought I'd say it anyway!

Also, no matter what she might suggest...MAKE SURE YOU ARE HAPPY with the choice. If you hate 'em--but she likes 'em--that's not a good thing either. If she likes 'em--and you're iffy--she might be right.

Come to think of it...it's time for me to head out for a new pair. AND, I need to change my provider (of the past 15 or so years) as my work has switched-out insurance plans!

Since this post is over 2 years old, I would hope the OP has found his solution.

Re: I need glasses!

I have been trying to figure out why there are people joining HTF only to reply to a old post. I googled "I Need Glasses" and this post is on top of the third page of results. I guess it is possible that someone needing glasses and doing research came up with this thread? And then they decided to reply with out looking at the posting date?

bahadir - Welcome to HTF. Could you help us out? What made you want to join HTF and reply to a 2 year old post?

Re: I need glasses!

Well, just to annoy the OP a bit, I now purchase my glasses online from sites such as Zenni Optical and Eye Buy Direct. The cost savings are HUGE!

My only issue with Zenni Optical is that they don't buff the edges of the lenses, causing them to act like mini prisms. Eye Buy Direct however does buff the lens edges properly, but their frame selection can be a bit limited at times. Eye Buy Direct's major advantage is that you can upload a picture of yourself, and try different frame styles. Unfortunately, not all the frame are within scale, so check the measurements carefully!

The biggest advantage with both of them is the cost. You can easily get a pair of basic glasses for well under $30, shipping included. Complex prescriptions, bifocals and transition lenses will of course cost you extra.

I think I just saw him stumbling down the hall over there...

Francois: Interesting. I would never think to do that. Might be a way to get a cheaper back-up pair...or maybe a pair of prescription sunglasses (which my vision policy no longer supports! ).

Usually they come to, uhm, promote something. We keep our eyes open therefore.

Re: I need glasses!

I would assume that most new people tend to read all of the topics when they first join because they missed all of the conversations. Replying to an old topic is probably common because they want to respond.

It's easy for the "regulars" to figure out what's new and what's not, but a noob may be a bit overwhelmed with all of the topics and may forget about looking at dates. I know I've joined forums and went through old posts and saw some topics I'd LOVE to respond to...but I've always been careful to know when a topic has run it's course. Some people might not understand this unspoken netiquette and you can't always fault them for that.

Tinted lenses cost much less than transition lenses. And you can choose the strength and color of your tinting.

As a reference, transition lenses in "dark" mode are the equivalent of 50% tinted lenses, which is just right for me, but might be too weak depending on where you live and what you prefer.

The sunglasses I don't like are the goggles, mainly because the lenses are not parallel to my eyes. My prescription is strong enough that any significant deviation from the alignment of my eyes will result in blurred vision.

If you already have a pair of comfortable glasses, measure the overall width, bridge width and temple length, and use that as a guide when you shop online. The measurements are also usually written on the frames themselves and may still be readable.

Finally, if you don't already have it, have a friend help you measure the distance (in millimeters - ask a Canadian ) between the center of your pupils. That measurement is important for proper centering of the lenses.

Re: I need glasses!

Wow, 2 year old post that just picked up speed and still on the first page!!

Yes, I found my glasses, but I'm thinking it's almost time to buy NEW glasses!!

I ended up getting a pair of oakleys (and Rx oakleys as well). coated the wazoo outta them, scratch, glare, you name it...I'm not sure what the exact model is. Will I buy Oakley's again? likely not. next sunglasses I buy will be Maui Jims (had a pair of non-Rx before the current ones and loved them). I've got a friend who's an optician at a fairly high end place who said she can get me a good deal on just about anything whenever I'm ready.

I have a pair of Rx Maui Jims and I love mine, however, I did have two issues with mine: on the first pair the lenses cracked and the second broke at the nose piece, both times were fixed under warranty and have had good success every since but I did have to endure a month without mine.
