UNIVERSAL,WHERE IS FLASH GORDON IN HD?

Thread Starter
Am I the only one hoping that Universal will release this in HD DVD when the SD comes out in September? From memory it's great fun and always looked fantastic.Given the poor quality,IMO, of some of the other titles they are releasing in HD, I would have thought that this title, given its apparently devoted fan base, would not only sell discs but players. Come on Universal!

I really, really, really hope this gets announced for HD-DVD...the colors in this movie would pop so well.

One of my most favorite guilty-pleasure films of all time!

Count me as another who would buy this one in a heartbeat. If they were to announce this for HD DVD, it would be my most anticipated confirmed upcoming HD release. No joke.

Yep guilty pleasure. While they're at it an HD version of Conan the Barbarian would be most welcome. CROM!!

Add me to the list. Camp classic. I'm buying it either way but HD would be so much sweeter than a SD DVD.

BTW, anyone know what extras they are putting on the DVD? Commentaries?

I'm also keen to get this title on HD-DVD - not worried about the extra's, just give me the film in Hi Def. Come on Universal

Re: UNIVERSAL,WHERE IS FLASH GORDON IN HD?

It boggles the mind that this wasn't release simultaneously in HD DVD. Someone at Universal must think that this film's following is so small that all the pent up demand for a SD DVD SE would evaporate if it were released on HD DVD as well. Perhaps they're right, but to say I'm disappointed in their decision would be a major understatement.

Also, re: Conan: The Barbarian, this HD DVD needs to happen, but I think they may be holding it in reserve for the 'all important' Q4.

A new SD DVD version was announced today, but no HD-DVD version.
I have a homemade HD-DVD version I made from the Showtime broadcast and the colors look amazing. Only DD2.0 soundtrack but it will hold me over until universal releases the real thing.

How did you make an HD-DVD out of an HD broadcast? I didn't know they had recorders yet.

Was a release date give? I'll buy the SD just to hold me over until the HD.

Yes, August 7th.

Re: UNIVERSAL,WHERE IS FLASH GORDON IN HD?

It might not mean anything - it seems to me that many HD releases are announced much closer to the release date than SD ones, probably for the same reason that we may not see the HD version right away - the studio wants to make sure authoring and replication facilities are available to produce sufficient amounts before committing to having product available.

Thanks. Hopefully an HD announcement will be given before this date, if so I'll wait, but if not I'm so buying this.

Re: UNIVERSAL,WHERE IS FLASH GORDON IN HD?

Count me in for an HD DVD release! I wonder if they'll use this release as a benchmark to determine if an HD DVD release is viable?

I hope you're right.

Universal along with the BD exclusive studios need to get up off their asses and release some catalog content that'll actually sell some players instead of sitting back and letting Warner do all the work.

A big and healthy selection of desirable titles will tempt the fence sitters much more than a 20% price drop on the players.

The HD broadcast streams can be captured via firewire, and software like Ulead's DVD movie factory 6+ can author HD-DVDs. There's a huge thread over at the AVS forum giving you more details. It's been possible since the day the first HD-DVD players hit the market. So basically any Cable, or Sat HD broadcasts can be made into homemade HD-DVDs.

Re: UNIVERSAL,WHERE IS FLASH GORDON IN HD?

What really bothers me about this news is this-
When you (or more importantly, the suits at the studios) look at the N/VS sales data, you see some truly awful numbers for catalog titles.
But the thing is, most of those catalog titles were either just recently re-released on sd dvd in remastered SE editions (like Bullitt or The Getaway) or they have been sitting in discount bins going for under $10 for the last few years (American Werewolf in London). Flash Gordon has pent up demand since it has never recieved an NTSC anamorphic transfer. For that reason alone, people will be picking up a new disc. It has also been OoP in R1 for at least 4 or 5 years now, another reason people will pick it up. Had this been a day and date HD release as well, we would be getting a much better sense of just how well (or poorly) catalog material will move on the format. As it is now, even if they come back and release the HD version in 6 months to a year, A lot of the pent up demand will have been satiated with the sd release and even hardcore fans are going to less than thrilled with another double dip so soon.
Very, very unwise decision on Universals part.

In fact, If I were them...and I really did have an interest in driving this format ahead, I would consider several releases like this- with high cult appeal- as temporary HD only releases...maybe 6 months or so, before there is even the regular sd release. I realize this release is designed to tie into a TV series as well, but this should have been planned much earlier- or- the movie (on sd) could be held back to coincide with the promotion of the inevitable TV series release on dvd (though of course that could well be what is being planned for an HD version). I just think this is one case where they have a golden opportunity to use a catalog title to generate a burst of enthusiasm in the HD DVD format, and they aren't capitalizing on it.
Not saying this release in itself would have driven player sales- but the chatter about it, had it been a true exclusive over even sd dvd, would have gotten peoples attention- and that combined with upcoming lower priced players would have contributed to the inclination of more people to buy into the format in the future.
And then the eventual sd release would have still made money for them.

would have been a win/win as far as I could see.
oh well....
