Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

This is kind of new territory (TV series continues as comic book) but I wouldn't want to discuss it on any other forum. My assumption is this thread will follow the same rules as a show discussion thread. In other words, no spoiler boxes needed for content from issues that have already been released.

So far I'm digging Xander's increased maturity and responsibility and quasi Watcher status with Buffy. We haven't been fully reacquainted with everyone else, but I'm excited to catch up with what they're up to. Sadly, Dawn still seems to be the whiner.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

I've read reviews in EW, and they are very positive. I'm intrigued. However, my wife looked into getting the comic for me and it seemed a bit difficult to come by (can't just run to a local bookstore and pick it up) and a little pricey ($5 per issue?).

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

DaveF, I saw issue 1 at Borders for $2.99. I don't know if every Borders carries it though. You may want to hurry because I'd bet that issue 2 is going to hit Borders soon.

This isn't a knock against the series but so far my favorite bit has been the recap in issue 2. They summarize what has happened with the characters and then the last line says "Oh and Dawn's a giant."

I had trouble finding it locally, but then I wasn't that committed to getting them on day of release. I ultimately ordered from tfaw.com, which makes the price around $5/issue because of shipping. But Border's is a good tip.

Being an inherent collector I'm a little bummed I didn't get the first printing of #1.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

The bit about the hooking up between Buffy and Xander was just weird. I just couldn't picture the actual actors getting busy on the TV screen. Maybe I just think of their characters more as brother-sister, so any subsequent hookup just feels odd.

Well, it was part of her dream, right?

I also liked how they answered the whole Buffy dating the Immortal thing. I never really cared for the idea and it feels better that it's a doppleganger decoy.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

My wife got me the first two issues; read them today. I'm ambivalent: I didn't care for the direction of S7 and this furthers it, but I enjoy the snap and and vigor of the characters still. I'll give it a few more issues and decide whether to stick with it.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

I picked up both covers for issue #1 but missed issue #2, so it looks like i'll just wait for the complete book when it comes out later, which is how I prefer to read it anyway since I don't have to wait a whole month to find out what happens next.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

After reading the first 3 issues, I'm underwhelmed for now, but hope it picks up steam soon.

Yeah, it seems off to a slow start and much of it seems to be catch up or reminders of past events. I was sort of disappointed with the latest issue - I was hoping Willow's reappearance would be a little more dramatic. But I'm sticking with it regardless.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

A couple more issues in, it's developing into an intriguing story line that elaborates on the ideas presented in the Angel episode "Damage," namely what happens when a potential-turned-slayer is not either sane (as in the case of "Damages") or moral? Appropriate that Faith be the one tasked to the job and the whole "My Fair Lady" transformation with Giles playing Henry Higgins was pretty entertaining.

Next month the Angel series continues in comic book form. Should be cool!

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

I found that I liked the BKV issues more than the Whedon issues, then again, I think BKV just knows how to pace comic book issues better than Whedon.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

I've liked the Faith storyline too. I had a good laugh at Faith thinking "What the *&^*%?" and saying the same thing in one frame.

Did you ever read Y: The Last Man? I'm curious to check it out but I think it's a little more adult than his Buffy story or his episodes of Lost.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

Yes, I've read 58 of the 60 issues of Y The Last Man (only because there 2 remaining issues in its 60 issue run are coming out in November and December). It's best read in chunks (DC releases trade paperbacks in such chunks (usually 5 to 6 issue arcs). I also read the 2 BKV runs on Runaways.

Yeah, I knew it was ending soon. I haven't read a Vertigo book since the days of Preacher and Sandman. I may pick up the first trade of Y to check it out especially since it's fairly inexpensive.

Anyway, back to the Buffy thread.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

I don't know if anyone is still reading this book but I love it. I'm not a mega-Buffy fan (in the sense that I've seen all the episodes and enjoyed them but, quite honestly, it's been so long since I've seen them that I can barely remember any of them) and this book is a highlight of my comic reading each month.

It took me three and a half months but I finally picked up the first Y: The Last Man trade and I thought it was excellent.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

Y The Last Man ended as well as it could, so there's that to look forward to.

I did get to talk to Georges Jeanty for a little while at the Atlanta Comics Expo. I asked about whether or not he was staying on the book, and he pretty much confirmed that he was in for most of the issue for season 8, which will comprise of about 40 issues, so that's over 3 years to cover season 8 of Buffy. There will be fill-in arcs here and there, but he'll be doing most of the issue, as his pencilling speed allows (probably 9 issues/year). I asked him about how it was working with Joss, and he couldn't have been more complementary about Joss, and how unassuming he really is.

The latest issue of Buffy did raise an eyebrow or two.

Re: Buffy Season Eight Comic Book

Ok Buffy S8 Comic fans, I need a primer on "Fray". We've continued to buy the comic monthly and have enjoyed it so far. But my wife and I know nothing about the fray and this last issue was the weakest so far (made worse because the drawings were noticably worse than normal).

I enjoyed the last arc with the Japanese Vampire clan. And it makes me look forward to when I can rewatch Buffy with my wife (I've seen them all, she's seen a handful).
