since the hd/dvd players have built in dd/dts decoders, can one connect the audio out straight to a multichannel amp?(without a preamp)

You mean the 5.1 analogue channels out?
Yes you can. No problem, except, perhaps, that you would like to have a master volume dial.

thank you cees. may be on of the future models they might install a volume control/speaker balance card.
