The Dark is Rising!

The exclamation point is my addition . I did an IMDB search to see what composer Christophe Beck of Buffy is up to and saw "The Dark is Rising" at the top of the list and to be released in the Fall! The young adult novel was one of my favorites growing up and overall it is an excellent series. I was encouraged to see Christopher Eccleston and Ian McShane in the cast, so fingers crossed that the film will do the book justice.

Some stills are now up and around. With divided attention I saw part of a 'the filming of', which looked intriguing. Will be following this and "The Golden Compass" due to McShane's presence as trailers are released. I believe it is slated for an Oct 2007 release.

Hm. It sounds like the Stanton family are Americans living in the UK? I'm pretty sure that's a departure from the books. I'll withhold any judgment...for now.

Just saw the trailer; can't say I'm thrilled with the impression it leaves, but I'll reserve total judgment until I watch the film.

For those looking for the trailer:

I've actually been talking to a friend of mine about this film. Personally, I've never read the book, but she's a big fan. What distresses her, tho, is the scuttlebutt that most of the Pagan and Arthurian subtexts are going to be stripped from the story. Not a surprise, since Walden Media seems to be very Christian oriented. So far, that's the way it looks from what I've seen.

Not a big fan of the kid, but Ian McShane gives some nice weight to some of those scenes. We'll see how good the movie turns out.

If this is true, then they might as well name it something else as those things form the core of the series.

Don't forget The Golden Compass is getting the same treatment. 2 neutered fantasies in one year.

I don't think that is going to affect "The Golden Compass" much. The anti-religion stuff doesn't really start to hit hard until the next book.

I think the books have greater problems to be addressed than just that. The kinda downer ending, for example. I also think the anti-religion stuff gets pretty heavy-handed. Hell, the movies might actually IMPROVE the story.

Re: The Dark is Rising!

I saw the trailer for The Dark Is Rising, and speaking as someone completely unfamiliar with the books, the young protagonist looks like an export from the Disney Channel. I wouldn't have been surprised to see a shot of him skateboarding through a castle.

Re: The Dark is Rising!

Looks like they made an adjustment to the title - it's now called "The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising." Trying to fight the cynicism, but this seems like an attempt to capitalize on Potterphilia. If I ever go see this, I'm sure I'll enjoy it as my expectations will be so low...
