ReInstalling Office 2003?

So, my PC crashed and the guy who repaired it reinstalled XP Pro into another directory. He also installed Office Pro 2002 (I have 2003) into its own directory. No data has been lost.

I want to reinstall Office 2003 without losing the pertinent settings and data for it. I don't believe the reinstall will wipe out documents but I've worried about my Outlook 2003 data. I have to get back my personal folders and other settings for it.

There are two directories now for Office. Office10 which I believe is the 2002 version and OFFICE11 which I believe is 2003. Should I just install Office into another directory and and try importing into it?

I'm not sure how to proceed.

Re: ReInstalling Office 2003?

First of all, export all the data from Outlook into PST files. Then get those off the harddrive, for instance by placing them on a CD-RW or DVD-RW. Also export your sorting rules if you have those, and your contacts. Once that is done, you'll be able to recover if things go south.

I would strongly urge you to do the same with any and all documents you have. Nothing beats backups when doing any sort of work on the machine.

Frankly, if I were you I'd be cranky about the apparently shoddy work the repair guy did. I'd also consider going the backup everything-format the machine-start from scratch route, but that may be too over the top for you.

If reformatting is too much then I'd at the very least do "backup Outlook and everything else, remove all Office installs and reinstall 2003" - but that's just me.

There are lots of info resources on the web on how to backup Outlook. Here is the first one I spotted when I googled - it should be fine but don't blame me if it isn't.

Re: ReInstalling Office 2003?

What I did was to install office 2003 and than copy the .pst file into the correct directory. This worked a little but not enough. I than uninstalled office and reinstalled with the .pst file already in place.

this worked better, but did not get my email accounts setup so I manually set them up. That basically got my Outlook working.
