Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

This is great news Shane. Excellent series and should be a stellar set in HD.

I am very much looking forward to this release. I wonder if it will be in the oversized cases the other Japanese releases I have purchased came in.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

I sure hope that when the US release for this comes out on Blu-ray, it'll have PCM 5.1. That would be nice

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

Why are people expecting this on Blu Ray? I thought HBO was doing HD DVD exclusively. Or did the Sopranos come out in Blu as well as HD DVD?

Either way, look forward to this coming out on HD DVD in the US. Assuming it ever does. Absolutely fantastic series on DVD. I might double dip if I can sell the DVD's.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

HBO content is distributed by Warner Bros. so it would be on both formats just like the Sopranos.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

Given Warner's treatment (or lack of) with many Blu-ray titles, who knows when and how it will be released on Blu-ray. (The BD-J issue doesn't explain all of Warner's actions by any means.)

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

Total set will cost around $200.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

The high price of the dvd set is the main reason I never got around to buying it.

The BD-J issue explains the lack of BD releases for the In-Movie Experience titles, such as Batman Begins and V for Vendetta. The currently HD-DVD only titles without In-Movie Experience, such as Forbidden Planet and Casablanca, is explained by the earlier launch of HD-DVD. Like the recently released The Dirty Dozen and Enter the Dragon, the BD versions are slowly catching up.

VERY slowly...
I'm still waiting for the Bd of "The Perfect Storm"...

It was originally $100 for the set....ever since I have seen it for $80 or less. As low as $50-60, iirc.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

About once a year I see the original set at Costco for about $50. Not a bad price for such a good series. I don't know if I'd be willing to import it for $200 + shipping though... that's a bit too high for me.

But, what about the explanation for lack of lossless audio on the Blu-ray version of Happy Feet (and other movies), for example, but not the HD DVD version?

or $30 at most used shops in pristine condition.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

There's an odd disparity between US and UK DVD pricing.

We Brits pay far more for new release discs and catalogue titles, generally, but benefit from some very agressive discounting in promotions and sales.

Band of Brothers is usually sold here for about £18 ($36), from an RRP of £60 ($120).

Just the result of when it was in production. Look for TrueHD on Warner BD titles in the near future.

How do you figure that? The HAPPY FEET BD had to be in production around the same time as the HD DVD version. Yet, it didn't have a TrueHD or lossless PCM track. IMO, Warner has been trying to handicap their BD releases right from the start. Unfortunately, I can't prove my suspicion.

Dolby TrueHD is Dolby TrueHD regardless of the format on which it is placed. If Warner had TrueHD tracks prepared for HD DVD releases then why weren't they used on the BD versions? It is not like they would have to do any remastering. All they had to do was put the TrueHD track on the disc. SONY was putting uncompressed PCM tracks on their releases. Space limitation wouldn't be a viable excuse, so why couldn't Warner put the TrueHD tracks on their BD releases since those tracks take up considerably less disc space than an uncompressed track?

I could see why Dolby TrueHD tracks would not have appeared on some of their very early releases, but that doesn't explain why HAPPY FEET doesn't have a TrueHD track. The BD disc was released at exactly the same time as the HD DVD, so it had to be in production at exactly the same time. What is Warner's excuse now?

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

I'm pretty sure this will come out on Blu-ray eventually, so I'll wait for a US release. Hopefully it'll be less than $200... as much as I absolutely love Band of Brothers, I'm not sure even I would want to spend that much on it.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

The sd disc set is one of my most watched discs( at least once a year) but at $200 even if i watched it 20 times it works out to still $10 a viewing.

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

I adore this series, and have watched it a half-dozen times. But that price tag is a little steep.

I'm glad it's coming out, however. Maybe someone would like to trade me for it.

Mini-review of the Japanese HD DVD -release can be found here:

Damn, I want this series.. But sadly not with this price (nor the format)..

Re: Band of Brothers coming to HD DVD

I already own the sd version and the picture and sound is outstanding as it is. I'm not going to upgrade to hd-dvd if and when it comes out. I'd much rather spend the money on other titles I don't own yet
