Missing Notification Area

Running WinXP I had hid many icons not in use in the notification area of the task bar. Now the notification area is not showing anything. When I right click to change it, it is not highlighted to allow me to change any settings. How do I bring that back?

What if you right-click the taskbar and select Properties? If that works, there is a "Notification Area" section on the bottom half of the taskbar properties window and you can try unchecking the "hide inactive" annoyance.

That feature is not available anymore. Don't know what I did to screw it up
