Of course it costs more money in the long run but paying about $25 is alot easier pill to swallow than about $45 for most people. And according to TV Shows On DVD, it's taking longer than they thought to restore the cartoons rather than a WB conspiracy to make $10 more between two sets.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

The MSRP isn't a big deal. The MSRP on the first volume is $65, while it's only $42 on Amazon.com. I would expect the second to be around $26, which is a quite reasonable price for 31 restored cartoons with extras.

Sticking to the MSRP as the rule of thumb is about as bad as the complaining about Criterion's DVDs for the same reason.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

I look forward to the war year Popeye's as much as the next person but considering how much we all bitched and moaned about these cartoons being unavailable for years, $26+/- for excellent restorations is something to be cheering about - even if it isn't four discs.

has anyone heard if best buy is doing the tin for vol 2

It's not in the Best Buy flyer, so it's pretty safe to say "no"

I sent an e-mail to Jerry Beck to see if he knew more, but haven't heard anything back.

I know its kind of early to ask this, but I want to hear everyones opinion .Do you think theyll continue the series with volume 4 , even though the black and white shorts are finished ???? Im as much a fan of the 40s- 50s color shorts , as to the black and white Fleischers.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

Well i thought the original intention was to do all the theatrical shorts, the work on the next set, early tv, then the HB ones, but the HB ones are coming out at sort of the same time, and definitely in smaller sets as it doesnt cover that same kind of material, the end of last year till now has truly been a banner time for Short Features, live action or animated, only wish that the Betty Boops, Puppettoons, Terrytoons, would finally start to show up, and Fix Tom and Jerry

Yes, I know they said they would do all the theatrical shorts, I just hope they stick to that plan.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

Best Buy's ad this week shows Vol. 2, which they're selling for $24.99. In small print under it, it says "Vol. 1 ... $9.99".

I wonder if that's an error. I paid close to 40 bucks for Vol. 1, and considered that a bargain, since the list price is $64.98.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

Could the Best Buy ad reference to Volume 1 mean that the $9.99 price is for the first volume of the H-B "Popeye and Friends" release?

Amazon.com: Popeye and Friends, Vol. 1: Popeye & Friends: Movies & TV

That's probably what they mean but to add to the confusion, the only thing they have a picture of is the 1933 to 1938 Volume One.

It would make for interesting price challenge, that's for sure. If you can get the first volume for $9.99, I'd pick up 3-4 of them for gifts.

Yeah, I said it over in the Weekly Roundup thread but since they show Volume One in the ad, I think you'd have a case to argue for the $10 price.

I was thinking about stopping by Best Buy today, maybe I'll try picking one up to see what happens.

EDIT: I went to BB and they didn't have any Popeye Volume One in stock so I couldn't check the price.

I was thinking the exact same thing, at that price i can see getting 3 more sets and using them as gifts, i only wish that best buy had continued with the tin like they did on the first set.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

What happened to the non-pd of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS? I know that they "down-sized" volume II of POPEYE, but will they release it another context?

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

Personally, I'm just as happy with 2-disc sets providing that all the Popeye cartoons are included and that the chronological order is observed. I just hope the release schedule won't take too many years to complete.

I don't see how WHV is going to find room to include Gulliver's Travels unless one of the discs is a flipper.

Perhaps we can look forward to a fully restored Hoppity Goes to Town as an extra on the next set.

Personally, I wish both animated features, Gulliver's Travels and Hoppity Goes to Town, could be fully restored and supplemented in their own separate packages. They are milestones in animation deserving of special editions.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

Gulliver's Travels and Mr. Bug Goes to Town are supposed to be handled by Lionsgate, for Republic/Paramount. They're restored and preserved at UCLA, so it's not like it would be a big deal to put them on DVD properly. Then again, UCLA restored the whole run of Betty Boop cartoons years ago and they're still MIA from DVD.

problems with Popeye Vol 2

Notice regarding Popeye the Sailor 1938-1940 Volume 2, Disc 1

Warner Home Video is advising consumers who purchased Popeye the Sailor 1938-1940 Volume 2 DVD that two shorts on Disc 1 have an alternate opening credits sequence.

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

I bought Vol 2 yesterday (at Best Buy) but because it is not in a tin case, it looks "out of place" alongside Vol 1 - this is annoying for a series !

Still hats off to Warner for setting up the program to offer up a replacement disc program for Disc 1 of Vol 2.

Regards,

Re: Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1 (1933-1938) 7/31

Well, I have to sadly say I'm not that impressed with Vol.2. The first set seems far superior in both quality and "mutterings." The first set was much funnier, too. I sat through most of the shorts on this (which they're calling "episodes" now) and hardly broke a smile. Seems to have less Bluto, too, during these years. I skipped ahead to watch the two with Popeye's Poop-Deck Pappy, but those seemed inferior, too.

Did something change in the production department during these years? A change in writers, or animators?
