Stargate Universe (3rd stargate series!) - Page 6

Hmmm....that trailer makes it seem as if they are stepping up their "action" game a little bit. I'm intrigued.

And it's back April 2nd.  At least, that's the date here in Canada on Space.

I've seen the trailer for the last half of the season and I'm still not impressed. Sci Fi missed out on a great opportunity to repeat the previous episodes and to get new fans to jump on the new series but they have the idiot policy of not re-broadcasting repeats of current season episodes.

Up here in Canada, Space has been re-airing them (at 9pm) straight through with ep 10 coming the same night as ep 11 (ie, the first new ep).

According to GateWorld (beware of spoilers in the story), Robert Knepper has been cast as a recurring villain in season 2. That could certainly get interesting.

Just a reminder, the mid-season break is now over and the series resumes tonight!
Put me down as someone who found the return last night to be really.. blah.  Yes, lots of space action, etc. but it all ended up meaning nothing... everyone back right where we started before the break.
I guess it is a matter of perspective but I kind of laughed in the end when Rush and Camile were talking about Young being dangerous. If he were really all that dangerous he would have bashed Rush’s head in on the planet. As it is Young at least gave him a chance at survival.

Things between Young and Rush are at a different level.  They know about this alien race and the alien race knows about them.  There was some definite progression.  We'll have to see how it all develops.

At least there were no soap opera snippets in it. We have to be thankful for that.

I'm amazed that no one has picked up from their past experiences that Dr. Rush is the most dangerous person on the ship, ready to let people die for his own personal interests.

 "First Space Battle here!"

That line by Eli was the best thing about the ep!

The CGI aliens were pretty cool as was the aforementioned Space Battle; but I'm still really struggling to remain interested in this show.  To tell you the truth, I was *really* hoping that we wouldn't see Dr. Rush for another four or five episodes ...

Well, apart from Sergeant Sugartits going all gooshy over the widower-dude, the "Yup, I'm Gay" moment for the same dude, followed by Ms. Headlights crying herself to sleep at the very end of the episode.

It would have been better to have an episode or two with him missing or at least for more time on the show to have passed.

"How do they know English?"  How did the entire inhabitants of the Pegasus Galaxy?  That's a weird one to try to put back in the bottle now.

Ming Na's a real bite in the ass.  I'm starting to miss Gene's philosophy of no one fighting amongst themselves in the future.  Oh, hell.  That's because this isn't the future.

I missed the scene where Caine revealed he was gay, but I don't think I'd turn down James's advances (James is the name of "Sergeant Sugartits"--not some guy).

Kind of just okay.  I started catching up on Spartacus this weekend, and it was a minor annoyance to stop watching those episode to come over to this one.  I'm really kind of annoyed by the rock song ending they always seem to do.  It was kind of interesting at first, but now it just screams, "This isn't your father's Stargate, beeyotch!"

Near as I can figure, humans on other planets speak English... just because, while other alien species have to learn English before they're able to communicate with our heroes (Asgard, the Nox, etc.). The aliens in SGU do not speak English, they merely sent the one word message: "Surrender". Presumably, they obtained that word from Dr. Rush's mind.

I don't mind the song montages so much, but it did seem kind of unnecessary in this ep. It felt like they put it in there just for the sake of it, without having much footage of actual interest to use in it. Other than that, though, I thought it was a fine ep. Good to see some good ol' Stargate ingredients like space battles and alien creatures begin to find their way into the series.

I worded that bad.  I knew they got the word from Rush, but the Stargate people finally figured out that it's dumb that far-flung aliens know English with no explanation.  The Universal Translator was a brilliant creation, and they should have grabbed an equivalent from Teal'c back in Children.

Ah. Well, like I said - humans speak English, aliens do not. So it kind of makes sense that they'd wonder how these aliens "knew" English.

I get what you're saying now.  It blew right past me the first time.  I guess it's because I was thinking of the Nox in their human guises and wasn't getting the distinction you were making.

Nah, Caine didn't out himself as gay or anything (that I'm aware of) -- I simply called him evidently "gay," because no sane hetero man with a half a cock would've turned that action down.

I was waiting for that reveal too - does seem to be a pretty lame excuse.  Now, couple that with the fact that she, being a highly trained military soldier, could probably break his IT/scientist body in half if they had a messy breakup, then he might have a better excuse....

Finally watched Space.  I liked it better than most - it's up there with Time.  The problem still remains that this isn't a Stargate show.  If this were simply titled "Destiny", or "Universe" or "Whiny People In Space" I might have a slightly different opinion.  I'd still watch it, since it's sci-fi, but I'd watch it like I watched BSG - save it to PVR and watch it when I felt like it.  But I'd judge it on its own merits/demerits.  Not compare it to some standard that's already been set.

It's technically good - I really like how you only heard the blasts from inside the ships.  I liked how the aliens looked.  I liked how the aliens didn't know English.  (I know episodes like this won't be the norm - way too expensive.)  But too much of the characters are still unlikeable.  Too much internal drama, and forced in my opinion.

It'll be interesting to see what the ratings are like for this week's episode.  Space, while seeing an improvement over the midseason finale was still the 2nd lowest rated episode.  Was it because it was Good Friday, or simply because viewers don't like what they see?
Might also be because people forgot it was airing.  Count me as one of those.  I found out that it was on by coming into this thread on Sunday. Oops. :)

Other than hating the rock song at the start and being annoyed for a while after that, it was pretty good.  I'm a Military.

Yeah, things are heating up quite nicely.

I've read some fan response where it seems a lot of viewers are siding with the mutineers, and I can't really see why - there was little reason for it beyond Rush/Wray's wanting to be in charge. Ultimately, they all answer to Stargate Command, right? For all the talk about how the civilians should be in charge of the military, as supposed to the other way around, I don't see the SGC approving this. Especially when, as has been pointed out again and again, these are the "wrong people in the wrong place". Plus, they're in a constant life-or-death situation, not creating a new society as Wray was arguing.
If Wray started in with talk about civilian leaders around me, I'd ask, "Who elected you?"  If I were Scott, I don't think I could share a bed with Chloe after she was in on the attempted coup.  That may still be his reaction.

I'll be interested in seeing what happens to their relationship due to this.

Did anyone else watch this in 5.1 and notice all the bass - especially at the beginning?  It felt to me that there was some extra stuff there to make you feel vibrations.

I thought it was a better line than that, didn't Eli say "First real space battle here"!

All I have are seventeen year old PSB Alpha speakers in my set-up, and no subwoofer. The bass vibrated the floor! The system never did that before!

I still wish Rush was dead. He's as bad as Princess Leia heading back to the rebel base knowing full well there was a tracking device on the Falcon!
I have got to say that for two supposedly intelligent people Rush and what's her name really didn't think the situation through. Unless they were going to lock up the soldiers indefinitely how did they think they would be able to control them long term?

Even without the guns and facing armed civilians the soldiers over time would be able to pick them off one by one until they regained the ship unless they were locked up.

I really liked the line where the medic basically told the civilians they were doomed to failure because they had brought war to the ship and war is what we (soldiers) do.
I'm not sure we were watching the same thing. In their minds, they did lock them up. They took control of ship operations and sealed off the solders into a certain part of the ship. Or at least they thought they did.

And one other thing... being intelligent doesn't mean you're omniscient. It also doesn't mean you never "forget to think about" something someone with generally less intelligence considers.
