'The Fighter': Aronofsky reduced to hired gun?

I am a Darren Aronofsky fan but...

Another true story of a boxer's fall-and-rise? Meh. And Damon and Wahlberg now playing brothers? Double meh.

Re: 'The Fighter': Aronofsky reduced to hired gun?

The guy's got a family to support now. His son's supposed to go without braces or college just so he can maintain purity as an independent auteur?

Seriously, though: Being a hired gun never stopped great directors from doing excellent work. Hawks and Ford are two obvious examples, but there are plenty of others.

And just because it's a boxing picture doesn't mean it can't be great. Imagine if someone had said, about thirty years ago, "Why is Martin Scorsese wasting his time making another true-story film about some boxer?"

It was only a matter of time before it happened, for reasons which should be obvious.

I've often wondered why no one ever cast Robert Redford and Brad Pitt as father and son, I find the resemblance uncanny. Or maybe it's a case of "all white people look alike" .

Anything Aronofsky does will be a pleasure. As Michael says, he's got a wife to feed and house...and she has expensive taste Well, not really. But who cares...anything that gets a film of his to theaters before 2012 is a good thing.

Plus, I suspect The Fountain wouldn't have been terribly good for his career. Astonishing movie, brilliant movie, I loved every second of it, but in the pure dollar terms that Hollywood focused on, it was a flop. Making a few workman films, provided he is selective in selecting his projects and chooses films that actually offer something worthwhile and challenging, something more than just popcorn films, may hopefully build his name and allow him to then branch off into his more personal projects - I guess much like George Clooney makes the Ocean films in order to make Good Night And Good Luck.

How do you get this close to the more fitting example yet miss it, Steven Soderbergh?

IIRC, the all star cast of the Ocean's XX flicks takes a serious pay cut, they kinda have to, who can afford them all at top billing? They're all buddies of Soderbergh anyway, and it looks to me like they're helping him pay the bills.

Every now and again you post something that reminds me you look like a young, bald George Harris. My mind flashes to that picture of you in fatigues from "The Seige" every single time.

You're right about Soderbergh. The "Ocean's" pics pay for really out-there shit like "Bubble".

Because I like Aronofsky, but I'm not a fan of some of the more out-there Soderberg films.

Or because I'm an idiot. I was actually thinking about Soderberg, but I think my mind was wandering, and got stuck on Clooney.

Redford's character in the film was the brother of Pitt's character, played as a young man by Craig Sheffer. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Pitt's character does not survive the story told in the film.
But many reviewers of River commented on the resemblance and suggested the Pitt's part was one that Redford might have played in his early years.

Probably the closest example is Spy Game, where Redford played Pitt's CIA mentor.

He's one of those directors those, such an Iconoclast that I'm sure any movie he makes should be interesting.

Sources said Aronofsky is awaiting a Paul Attanasio rewrite before signing on.

Unless I'm mistaken, Attanasio did some great work on "Homicide: Life on the streets." This could be a great movie.

Well, Paramount is fast-tracking The Fighter, and it looks it won't be starring Matt Damon, but rather...

Brad Pitt!!
