Rocky--3rd Straight Sony DVD that won't load on my player

Rocky Balboa is the third straight Sony DVD that I've rented/purchased that will NOT load on my Toshiba SD-3800.

This started with Stranger than Fiction, then happened with Casino Royale, and now Rocky Balboa.

CR and RB did load on my ten year old Panasonic as well as my PC. I did not test Stranger than Fiction on any of my other players.

We have a thread here to discuss the problem with the CR disc...I imagine others will have similar problems with RB and any other Sony disc that is released until Sony decides to do something about this.

As I said in my original post, RB plays on my old Panasonic player and my PC. Also, I have no problems with playing other discs on my Toshiba SD-3800 and really don't think I should have to buy a new progressive scan DVD player just so I can watch Sony discs.

Toshiba is sending me some firmware that they think will help, so we will see.

Re: Rocky--3rd Straight Sony DVD that won't load on my player

Toshiba manufactures HD DVD players - BluRay's direct competitor. Hmmmmm......

Let the conspiracy theories begin?!?

Just kidding. But this is very weird. Is there something about Toshiba's players that is different than most other brands out there?

Plays flawlessly on my Toshiba D-R4.

Re: Rocky--3rd Straight Sony DVD that won't load on my player

A few years back Criterion's "Spellbound" wouldn't play in Toshiba players (including mine) and apparently the problem was so wide spread that they had to do a second pressing. But it was only Toshiba players that had this problem.

I got the firmware from Toshiba, installed it, and the Sony discs still would not play.

As a consumer I am at a loss as to what I should do. Suggestions?

Buy an illegal copy, it won't have that problem

Re: Rocky--3rd Straight Sony DVD that won't load on my player

I had the same problem with Stranger than Fiction and Pursuit of Happiness on my Toshiba SD4700. The player tries loading the DVD and then shuts down. Returned the disks once and then hit google and discovered many people reporting the same problem. Definitely Sony screwing us with a new copy protection scheme and its affecting a lot of players. Appears to be ALL new Sony releases in 2007. I've been compiling a list of DVDs and players on my site wamajama.com

Here's the list of players so far:
* Compaq NC4010
* Dell laptop 5150
* Harman Kardon DVD101
* Harman Kardon DVD-25
* JVC DR-MV7
* Pioneer 810H
* Pioneer DVR-57H
* Sony DVP-CX995V
* Sony 400DVD Changer
* Tivo SD-H400
* Toshiba DS4700
* Toshiba SD-3750
* Toshiba SD-3800
* Toshiba SD-4700
* Toshiba SD-4800
* Toshiba SD-5109
* Toshiba SDH-400

The irony is that brand new Sony players are even having problems. Right now Sony is sticking to its guns which forces manufacturers to create a firmware upgrade. I'm hoping if enough people spread the word about this we can get Sony to back down and stop punishing us LEGAL consumers.

Re: Rocky--3rd Straight Sony DVD that won't load on my player

I think what's causing the problem is some sort of new and/or improved copy protection that sony is using....try as they may there's always someone out there who can bypass it.

Re: Rocky--3rd Straight Sony DVD that won't load on my player

I am having the same problem. I didn't realize it was because of a new copy protection scheme. But I thought it strange that all my (very old) DVD players were failing at the same time. Sony is really starting to tick me off.

Re: Rocky--3rd Straight Sony DVD that won't load on my player

I think is the same "new and improved" copy protection system that Disney has been using for some time now.

It esentially comes down to deliberately writing bad sectors into the disc, that is, producing faulty discs on purpose. That comes to show you how much they care about us, their customers...
