The last couple of days I’ve been viewing The Last Man Standing – LIVE.
It’s pretty amazing.
I love this man’s music but I’m of the opinion that there is indispensable Killer music, and then there’s the rest.
#1 would be the Sun Collection. You can get the 8 CD box set of everything Jerry recorded at Sun, or you can just pretend that you give a shit about rock & roll and American music.
Of course, Mr. Lewis recorded gospel and country and rock and blues….and boogie woogie.
The best of his country output, in the late 60s and early 70s, ought to have earned him a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. To Nashville’s shame, it has not seen fit to recognize his contribution.
The Hawk is now 71 and has not been a model of healthy living. Recent appearances promoting the latest album have been, uneven.
The “Last Man Standing – LIVE” session, which was broadcast on PBS this week as part of “Great Performances” caught him on a very good day.
This is really worth seeing and I hope you’ll check it out.

I could mention the big name guest artists on this CD/DVD collection, but I'm reminded of Jerry Lee's comment many years ago when asked by an interviewer about various session people on his early recordings, "I played on 'em, what the hell else do you need to know?"
