HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here! - Page 7

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

If you're not familiar with the two major publications of the home video industry, Video Business and Home Media Retailing, each of them will be publishing show dailies at EMA. Other publications available to be picked up should include the Hollywood Reporter and Variety.

If you have home video industry related business cards be sure to bring them. You'll find that the exhibitors expect folks to drop them off if they want to be contacted later about their products. I generally go through about 30 cards, as it's a small show (and I've been around for awhile). But, I'll be bringing more to pass along to other HTF attendees.

Stop by the press room at least once or twice a day to get updates on the celebrities & autograph signings. Look over the press releases to see if there are any exhibitors you want to visit.

NOTE: It 's considered unprofessional and bad manners to eviscerate press kits just to get a photograph or a sell-sheet. Be considerate of the PR efforts of exhibitors in putting the press materials out. These kits can be a big budget item for the smaller labels.

I've done it as well. Twice.

It's overpriced (as are most things in Vegas these days), but still worth going if you're even a moderate Trek fan.

Fairly easy to get to now that the monorail is open. Walk to the Bally/Paris monorail stop (OK, not exactly a short walk). Get on, ride it to the Hilton. The Hilton Monorail stop lets out right into the Star Trek attraction. I'm sure that was no accident.

If you don't want to pay the bucks for the 2 rides & exhibits, you can still have fun for free walking through the world's biggest Trek store (watch out for the occasional Borg drone wandering around), and eating at Quark's. Yes, they have Romulan Ale, and Klingon Blood Wine as well. And there are Ferengi waiters who are always ready to discuss the Rules of Acquisition and trade insults with us Hu-mons.

Dumb question. What exactly is a sell-sheet, and why would we (consumer/press) even be interested in one? Sounds like something for the dealers.

I guess in general I'm looking for guidelines like Gord gave us about the 34th floor. What kind of stuff is dealer-only? I want to be a good EMA citizen and not waste the time of folks who are trying to conduct business.

There are no dumb questions. A sell-sheet is a sheet or flyer describing a release. It generally includes art work, technical data (running time, color or B&W, etc), stock #, street date & order date, bar codes, etc. Many labels don't send out a lot of screeners to retailers. They'll send out sell-sheets with the pertinent information about a release to solicit interest and orders. Sell-sheets can be easily modified to run as advertisements in local newspapers and turned into store flyers. There should be sell-sheets available at EMA announcing new product into the 4th quarter. If there's a title announced that you're interested in, take one.

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

The Trek experience is a little overpriced and I understand there is even more now than the last time I was there in 2005. I've been twice mostly due to the transporter and would probably go again. I don't want to reveal too much for anyone wanting to go for the first time.

Andrew - thanks for the info on what not to do. I too want to leave the Expo with a positive impression and hope that we are invited back next year. Any other "don'ts" we should be aware of?

Just be professional and courteous. If a sign is outside a suite door that says a meeting is taking place, don't enter. Try to come back later. If you enter a suite with an open door and there's a meeting taking place, don't interrupt. If it's not an important meeting, a member of the exhibitor's staff will come over to see what you want.

It's expensive to exhibit in a suite at the Venetian. The smallest suite goes for $3,600 for EMA members. The next in size goes for $8,500 for EMA members. That's just the exhibit space. These people are here to do serious business. If they have the time, they're glad to schmooze & kibbitz. But if someone who's going to buy product comes in, let them do what they came to EMA to do- try to make money.

If you run into EMA staff, don't brag about all the swag you're collecting. They can see your overstuffed shopping bag. Tell them how much you're learning about the industry and what you think you're contributing by being allowed to attend.

Try to do the pre-show planning I suggested earlier. But remember, there's nothing you can find at EMA that's "The Golden Snitch." It's only stuff and not even "the stuff that dreams are made of." But it is lots of fun and informative to attend and learn about the industry.

Actually there are two monorail stops considerably closer...the Harrah's/Imperial Palace stop and the Flamingo stop. As with all of the stops along the Strip, you're forced to walk through the casinos and a veritable labyrinth of walkways to get to the monorail stations. And then be prepared to fork over $5 a ride.

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

Oh man, forgot all about the Trek experience, definitly gonna have to find some time to bring the Parents over there. It's not a cheap cab ride if I remember right tho, its a good hike off the strip.

Hmmm Business cards, now THAT would be pretty cool =) Probably too late for this year tho =)

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

You can often find 2 for 1 Trek coupons in some of the tourist publications (and I'm not talking about the T&A magazines being handed out on the streets!) The free pocket sized 24/7 guides are great reference material and have such coupons inside.

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

....All of a sudden I remembered, and ran to my DVD collection....Humm....The Star Trek Enterprise had these coupons that read "Beam up the Showgirls, Scotty." and "What happens in the 24th century, stays in the 24th century".....Save up to $15. Present tis coupon at Star Trek: The Experience ticket window and save $3 off each adult attraction admission. Also " Free Borg Sipper Cup with Cocktails"..... then in the very smallest of fine print: Offer expires July 31, 2006!!!

BUMMER!

Thanks, sometimes I get confused where the casinos are in relation to one another.

I did say it wasn't exactly a short walk. But $5?? I don't remember paying that much a couple of years ago.

I guess they jacked up the rates because it wasn't drawing enough passengers to pay off the debt. Having the system shut down several times due to mechanical problems didn't help. Nevada residents get to ride for only a dollar. I'd like to see any other public transportation system in the country charging fares five times as much for tourists.

Holy Pink Flamingos Batman!

Mink Stole!?!!!!

Gosh, I can't wait to see her!!!

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

Whose booth is Mink at?

Something for anyone to be aware of if they're arriving before their roommate for a hotel reservation under the roomie's name and credit card: The Venetian will then require you to produce (another) credit card in order to check in. You won't be charged, but they will run an authorization for the balance of the stay plus the refundable $100/day security deposit.

If that's an issue, the person in whose name the reservation was made needs to contact the Venetian for a form that he'll need to sign and return, granting permission for the authorization to be run for the room charges for Tuesday through whenever, plus the deposit.

It's my understanding that these are the only two ways a roommate can check in if the reservation is not in their name.

You'll pass the Blue Man Group ticket booth on your way to the show. In the past they've given out free CD 4 song samplers to anyone walking by. Grab one.

I saw BMG about 4 years ago when they were still at the Luxor. Very fun show. I hear they've changed things up at the Venetian, so I might be up for another go (time permitting).

It's an escalator, if that helps.

Talking to Ron this PM at about 2:15 he was telling folks to meet by the escalators outside the hall where the HTF demo room is. That's a little bit farther down into the meeting area than the St. Mark's escalators on the map.

If you're confused, I would hang out just past the Blue Man theater/store where the entranceway to the expo/meeting rooms are. I'm sure you can find the group. Many of us have met previously and we can just look out for each other.

Have a GREAT time & be safe.

Not getting much sleep. 4-5 hours per night.

Great meeting all of you so far -- looking forward to meeting
the rest of you in a few hours.

Going to be a long day. Lots of parties tonight.

Those of you that are here are in for a few nice surprises tonight
and tomorrow.

Very pleased with the room. Requested the king and guess what was assigned to me??? Yep - the double. No big deal for me but just thinking about the trouble everyone has had with getting a double. They found a king for me and it's very nice. Has a view of the pool too.

Did that In -N- Out pilgrimage ever happen?

Ron, I assume it's now a done deal: both the gratis and upgrade Tosh lists were submitted last Friday after the BD list was turned in earlier in the week?

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

I made a mini pilgrimage on the way to the airport. Both Toshiba lists got turned in on Monday. By the end of the week, I should have the address where those who opted for the upgrade will need to send a check or money order, approximate ship dates for all the players, and hopefully a list of what the three free titles will be. Heroes won't ship until much closer to street (end of August).

Re: HTF/EMA Vegas 2007: Welcome! Post questions or say Hello here!

Adam, you da man--thank you.

Wow--I thought Heroes was in lieu of, not in addition to, the original three free.

Some of the complimetary BDs are so "hot," they're not showing up in DVD Profiler. Waiting, for instance. Anybody else notice this?

All my BD showed up in DVD Profiler, which ones for you didn't show up?
