The Black Sleep (Question re: holding rights)

I'm watching this movie right now on TCM and during a quick pause for snack break, I jumped online to check the availability of this title on DVD.

M.I.A. as I'd assumed.

This was a Bel-Air Productions and I'm wondering which company has ownership of the film property or distribution now?

Even for a budget picture, with such a stellar cast, is there any chance of seeing this released to home video in the near future?

Re: The Black Sleep (Question re: holding rights)

I recorded that off TCM when it was on in January, and no syndicator fanfare came up at the end. My guess is that Sony owns it. TCM began airing a slew of films this year that were licensed from Sony, and this likely would include post-1950 (I think that's the cut-off) United Artists-distributed films such as The Black Sleep. The Sony fanfare has come on at the end of several of these films TCM has premiered this year--not just Columbia titles but also the occasional British or post-1950 UA film.

Other Bel-Air films include Bop Girl Goes Calypso, which was on TCM a few weeks ago, and The Girl in Black Stockings, which will air March 22.

I'm pretty sure it is owned by MGM, and that it was once slated for one of their Midnite Movies releases, but never made it. Another Bel-Air film which made it to one of those double features was VOODOO ISLAND.

Re: The Black Sleep (Question re: holding rights)

I wonder if it went the UA/MGM-UA/Sony route? MGM might technically be the copyright holder on it, with Fox (now handling Sony's MGM-UA releases) as the DVD distributor.

I would have put it in the first wave of Midnite Movie releases, but that's just me!

Well I hope it eventually shows up in a MM set (if MGM continues with the line).

Basil Rathbone is great and it's a really fun b-movie to watch on a late night with friends. It sort of reminds me of an early Hammer Horror film, if it were done in black and white.
