Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

I tried to ask about Allied Artists' "Queen of Outer Space" but couldn't get in. Now that Zsa Zsa is (indirectly) in the news again, it would be a good time to release it, right, Warner?

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

All the upcoming titles sound great but I wish someone would have asked Warner to buy Fox and Paramount's vault titles.

I had the exact same thoughts and was going to jokingly suggest the same if I hadn't gotten a chance.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

I just came across this thread. Robert, how often do you have chats with Warner? I would love to know of any info about HD releases of the The Matrix and Pan's Labyrinth. Thanks.
post #124 of 208

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

I suspect that the answer we would get on Pan's Labyrinth would be the same as what we got on LOTR i.e. it is a Picturehouse title and Warner only handles the distribution, as Picturehouse is a joint venture b/w HBO and New Line.

I wish I'd been able to ask about How the West Was Won and The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, but my wife needed the computer last night. I guess it's a new monitor and networking equipment before I upgrade to HD.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

[quote=Charles Ellis]Well, I noticed that Warner did NOT address the issue as to whetrher the recently-discovered 'lost footage' from Night of Dark Shadows would be included in the DVD release. The fans (along with the DS actors) have been clamoring for the 129-minute pre-release cut on DVD for the past couple of years- why isn't Warners listening? You bet Paramount wouldn't diss the Star Trek fans!

Given that they have employed an outside consultant and undertaken full restoration on a film that currently has a rating of 4.8/10 on imdb (i've never heard of it or seen it outside the mention it gets every year at the chat) I'd say fan's are very, very lucky that this is a WB release!

I don't understand these comments--personally, I think Fox has done a better job (with what they've got!) than Warners or anyone else...

and that's not really a knock against Warners (except maybe on their stinginess with the commentary tracks on Signature sets)

Paramount + Columbia, on the other hand, deserve to be stripped of their holdings forthwith!

Actually, you're right about FOX. My bad!

Paramount is absurdly bad though. My comments would not have mentioned FOX if I had gotten through.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

I thought it was a terrific chat. I wish I'd had a chance to ask about an extended version of CREEPSHOW, but tons of exciting titles were mentioned including the cult faves DEVILS, CRUISING, the DS films etc. and HAMLET, TWILIGHT ZONE, POLTERGEIST in HD and on an on.

Plus unspecific ALLIED ARTISTS titles which is exciting in an of itself.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

Yes Fox is finally getting some of the Samuel Goldwin titles released through MGM. One of the biggest satisfactions on getting these released such as Ball of Fire is seeing those amazon sellers reduce there price on the HBO version of Ball of Fire from 114-250 dollars down to 99 cents for their used copies after Ball of Fire gets released on May 22nd. That is some serious satisfaction

If Warner no longer owns "Fanny" (1961), who does?

WOWSER!! I didn't know it was going for that much. I found a second copy in a clearance bin about three years ago (I paid $5), but only got about $50 for it. I should have waited.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

I agree about wishing for more audio commentaries, especially for historically fascinating pre-codes. I don't know how these things work, but maybe there are film critics out there who'd be willing to record commentaries for free... I think I read somewhere that FOX doesn't pay their commentators, is that right?

I wonder who owns the rights to ELECTRIC DREAMS now... too bad Warner's expired. There are lots of Amazon votes and requests online, so I hope whoever's got it, realizes how many people want it on DVD!

Oh, and I meant to say how glad I am that GOLD DIGGERS OF 1937 (my favorite in that series) and more Busby Berkeley's in the works! Hopefully the box will contain more than just the 4 mentioned, but in any case, I can't wait. Ditto for Judy/Mickey and Andy Hardy.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

It was a shame to miss this years chat, thank you Robert for the recap, the only question I had was a follow-up to one of my questions last year, when, and they did say during last years chat that it was going to happen. I am still waiting on The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was said to being readied, with the Technicolor gleaming. Well the year has passed, and I thought that would have been a great candidate for Literary Classics Collection, but it was not with it. So we will just have to wait and see, and if Warner is reading this, I am on pins and needles for the Animation and TV Chat.
post #135 of 208

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

Dana - oh yeah, I want DORIAN GRAY too! Maybe in a Literary Classics Vol. 2?

I could never afford BALL OF FIRE before, so...much rejoicing over the upcoming release. And to those greedy second-hand sellers I say:

I looked it up on the IMDB and the original production company is listed as
"Mansfield Productions" with Warner Bros. being the Distributor - though "Fanny" was a Warner Bros. Picture. Maybe they only held the rights for a certain period of time (as with "My Fair Lady")

The question is who would be the company to release this execellent film?

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

Ball of fire, oh yes, thank god I didn’t get this yet, saw this as a kid and just fell in love with it. But if that is for the next Cooper set or is it in one post I read that it is coming from FOX (MGM) so I guess not.
I am kind of saddened, when are we going to get a full blown Stanwyck set from any of the studios. That and I wonder how many Busby Berkley set they plan on doing, and if in the end they will do an ultimate set like they did for Astaire and Rodgers? By the way thank you WB for saving Royal Wedding!
And what was the biggest thrill was reading that they are looking at the other P.I. series that they have, Charlie Chan. The only other question I would have asked, would have been for Lugosi’s Monogram 8 or a Lugosi Collection of some kind. To rescue some of his work from PD hell.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

Perhaps, the silence re: Jane Powell might be better than a flat out "no" at this point. I hope that it will become a reality, though.

Yes that is from MGM/FOX as another poster brought up Fox in another post. I did not get a chance to ask any question on WB owned Cooper titles such as The Hanging Tree, Bright Leaf, Task Force, One Sunday Afternoon, Today We Live and Operator 13, which are all that Warner Brothers owns on Cooper that are not released. I had thought that they also owned Saratoga Trunk but MGM has that title listed on their web site.

I was unable to participate, but the one title I really wanted to ask about was "Quo Vadis". Ultra Rez! Woo-hoo!

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

Collections for Eleanor Powell and Ann Sheridan, but no plans for Hedy Lamarr??? I would estimate their commercial potential at a rougly comparable level. OK Powell draws musical fans, but since when is Sheridan bigger than Lamarr?
I'm also rather unhappy about the vagueness about the silents. Warner holds a considerable amount of crown jewels of the silent era and the dropping of THE PRISONER OF ZENDA of 1922 is a bad omen.
Sorted by number of votes on the imdb they have GREED, THE CROWD, THE WIND, THE BIG PARADE, HE WHO GETS SLAPPED, SHOW PEOPLE, THE MERRY WIDOW, THE UNHOLY THREE, LA BOHEME, THE SCARLET LETTER, THE STUDENT PRINCE IN OLD HEIDELBERG. All high profile titles which are well known enough to sell in a few nice box sets, I imagine.

But i still want Hedy!!!!!!!!

MY QUESTIONS!!!!!

Here are some questions I would like definite answers to:

01) When are we going to see THE BOWERY BOYS films finally made available on DVD?! Possibly sometime in 2007? What's the hold up?

02) When is the (former) Allied Artist Pictures Corporation 1950s SF-Horror film catalogue going to be made available on DVD specifically pertaining to WORLD WITHOUT END (1956), THE CYCLOPS (1957), ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS (1957), NOT OF THIS EARTH (1957), FROM HELL IT CAME (1957), WAR OF THE SATELLITES (1958), ATTACK OF THE 50 FT. WOMAN (1958), QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE (1958), FRANKENSTEIN 1970 (1958), THE GIANT BEHEMOTH (1959) and THE WASP WOMAN (1959)?!

03) Does Warner Brothers have ownership of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET CAPTAIN KIDD (1952) and will it be made available on DVD...in fully restored and digitally remastered colour?

04) Will the eight THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. theatrically released film compilations (derived from episodes of the 1960s tv series) be made available on DVD?

05) Will the fifty MGM-produced OUR GANG comedy shorts be made available on DVD?

Thank you!

Jeff T.

Armin,WB didn't say there's gonna be a set devoted to Ann Sheridan this year. They simply told us, more of her films are coming out next year. It can be in collections devoted to other stars (Errol Flynn costared with her in Edge of Darkness and Silver River and Ronald Reagan in Juke Girl) or even themed collections, like film noir (Nora Prentiss, The Unfaithful), comedy (George Washington slept here).
And as far as I'm concerned, te Eleanor Powell set was the best news of the chat.
Can't wait!!

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

Anyone know what Warner's next Ultra-Resolution title will be? The last one was The Searchers I believe. I was disappointed by the response for a National Velvet reissue. Just because its selling well doesn't mean it can't look alot better!

Well, they did answer this. Warner said the films will not be released this year because they're still looking for better elements for some of them. They went on to say that they know they will sell well, and that they could put out a non-chronological set tomorrow, but they want to wait until they can put them all in order and find better elements.

Since WB reads these threads, I would like again to remind them that not everything they put out in all series sets (like their SUPERMAN TV Series or the Val Lewton Set) is always possible to be "100% sparkling", and so if 9 or 10 of the 48 Bowery Boys movies are not as perfect as the others, that's fine with me and understandable. Even though chronological order is always preferable to me, it's not really so necessary with the Bowery Boys movies. There's no difference between a film made in 1949 or 1951, really, and no continuous storyline or anything. Also important is that the core audience for those films - those who either saw them in the theaters in the 40s and 50s or on television in the 60s and 70s, aren't getting any younger, and they are, after all, going to be the main ones interested in these, sight-unseen.

I was going to ask, but couldn't get through. Still, some of the general information Warner gave leads me to believe these will happen.

Re: *** Official Warner Chat and Discussion Thread

Any guess about the 6 "new to dvd" movies on the John Wayne 100th Celebration?
I think they will be:
Allegheny Uprising (1939), with Claire Trevor;
Reunion in France (1942), with Joan Crawford;
Without Reservations (1946), with Claudette Colbert;
Tycoon (1947), with Laraine Day;
Big Jim McLain (1952), with Nancy Olson;
Trouble Along the Way (1953), with Donna Redd.

If that's the selection, I'll be very pleased, indeed!!

I hope not! That's a long wait for another beautiful ultra-resolution presentation. I am still hoping An American In Paris is coming. Nothing mentioned on that one.
