They said a tech had been dispatched and offered to let us keep it one more day and they will credit the additional day. So far I like it.

Yet another nail in Blockbuster's coffin...

So the plan is just to keep driving to the machine until you find one day that it is fixed? Blockbuster is sleeping easy. The only thing that could hurt Blockbuster at this point is if Netflix and Hollywood Video does what Blockbuster Online and Blockbuster does.

Their whole business is dependent on the operation of the machine, so I seriously doubt it would be down for a very extended period.

Is there another Redbox in your area, Patrick? You can return the discs to any location.

You can search for nearby locations on their website. www.redbox.com

Do you have to return the discs the next day in person? Sounds like the same thing as a video store but with a much smaller selection.

With Netflix around, why bother with this?

Because it's cheap.

Is there any way to get Netflix for $1 per movie?

Re: Redbox rentals? Seem to be a great deal.

Here's a follow-up - I returned the movie yesterday to the same machine (it was working this time). This morning I was greeted with an email receipt charging me for the extra day's rental. I somewhat expected this, and figured I would have to call the 1-800 number again to get my dollar back. Before I had a chance to do so, however, I received an email refund receipt crediting the dollar back. Good customer service!

Will_B - Blockbuster hasn't been "sleeping easy" for several years now. This is just another way that they have been beaten at their own game. The process is basically the same (go to the retail location, pick out your movie and return it the next day) but this method improved on two of the most important parts of the process - price and convenience. Its more convenient in that the machines are located in grocery stores, Wal-Marts, etc. where you can shop for food and other things at the same time. There's no need to drive to a second location to rent a movie. Price-wise, what can you say, its only a dollar. They've actually got NetFlix beat here too. NetFlix is a great value, but only if you take advantage of it. For the occasional renter that may only rent a couple of times a month, why spend $20 when you can spend $2 or $3?

If Netflix was to offer similar machines that offered a quick, non-mail, exchange for "subscribers" and $1 rentals for non-subscribers, they would have the perfect formula. That would really be something...

Re: Redbox rentals? Seem to be a great deal.

Patrick and Malcolm, re the $1 price you are aiming for, you can indeed beat that price if you are using Blockbuster Online's $18 a month plan. I averaged somewhere in the $1.40 range until recently when Blockbuster Online's Total Access program began (where instead of mailing back the envelope, you exchange it for an off-the-shelf rental at a physical Blockbuster store for free, effectively doubling your number of rentals).

I'd estimate my average rental price now is maybe 70 cents. But that's with me and two housemates having a quick turnaround. If we didn't rent so much, the price would creep back up to over a buck.

But as you say, occasional renters may indeed like the idea of vending machines.
