New Porcupine Tree album discussion

From www.porcupinetree.com.
Looks like the new porcupine tree will hit in April.

Quote:

Following two album playback events in New York and at Abbey Road in London, the cover design and track listing of the new Porcupine Tree album "Fear of a Blank Planet" have been revealed:

1. Fear of a Blank Planet (7.28)
2. My Ashes (5.07)
3. Anesthetize (17.42)
4. Sentimental (5.26)
5. Way Out of Here (7.37)
6. Sleep Together (7.28)

The album is set for April release through Roadrunner in Europe, Atlantic in the US, and WHD Entertainment in Japan. It's likely that both the stereo CD and 5.1 surround sound disc will be packaged together as standard.

I like the last line. Cd and dvd-audio in the same package. Awesome.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

I have only recently discovered PT. This band is insanely good and I can't believe that it took this long for me to notice that - thanks for the tip!!

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

Didn't know a new PT disc was so close. Excellent!

Is the dvd out yet?

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

On the last tour, PT played a lot of material from the new album. It is interesting and a bit different. I'm going to be interested to see how Alex Lifeson and Robert Fripp will fit in with the new material, since they both have guest spots on the new album.

The concert dvd from the "DeadWing" tour? Yes, "Live in Chicago" is out. If you're talking about the dvd that comes with the new album, I guess it will be out when the album is released in April.

On a side note, I wonder if the dvd will be a dvd-audio disc or a dvd-video disc. The band put out two separate dvd discs of "DeadWing", a dvd-audio disc and a music only dvd-video that came with a collectors book about the album.

If you mean the concert DVD "Arriving Somewhere"...yes it is out and it is awesome. Gavin Harrison is quickly becoming one of my favorite drummers.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

I really liked the new stuff (saw the show in SF). It is a bit heavier than previous stuff, but still recognizable as them for sure. I can't wait. My understanding was that the album would be like Stupid Dream which included a DVD-A and CD.

I'm not totally impressed with the mix on the Arriving Somewhere... Being mixed from a 2ch track it lacks a bit of overall separation, but it is a great disc none the less. Cymbal Song dts on the bonus DVD is worth the purchase alone

Got this from a friend:

Looking forward to this! I was blown away by this material when I saw them live over the summer. I can't believe the album's due so soon!

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

It's too bad they aren't hitting many places in the US. They are hardly hitting anywhere in the midwest. I live 3 hours from Dallas and I had hoped they might play there.

I was *really* hoping that since Alex Lifeson played on the album, that maybe PT might open for Rush on their tour this year. I guess it probably isn't going to happen, but that would be an amazing show.

Yoko Ono / Porcupine Tree collaboration
03-07-2007

The Porcupine Tree collaboration with Yoko Ono, a new version of her 1973 song "Death of Samantha", appears on her new album "Yes I'm a Witch" released on Astralwerks. Although credited to PT, Steven is actually the only member that appears on the track with Yoko - the piece was recorded as far back as 2001, and originally was issued on an EP in 2003. Other artists collaborating on new versions of Yoko songs include Flaming Lips, Antony and the Johnsons, Cat Power, Polyphonic Spree...etc.

" Cd and dvd-audio in the same package. Awesome. "

I fear the initial release will be like Deadwing . Cd and dts 5.1 only ( ???????????) with the Dvd-A following later with maybe some bonus stuff to make up

They did even fewer shows on the last round - only 6 dates in the US.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

Do they usually have an opening act, or do they just play for 3 or 4 hours non stop.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

They did have an opening act at the SF show, but couldn't tell you if they did at other shows. The opening act was quite entertaining also, but I can't recall their name; the main guy played/toured with Peter Gabriel and is also formerly of King Crimson. PTs set was fairly long also.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

I checked out the sampler but I really want to just wait and hear the whole record in one shot. I cannot wait to have this in my hands.

I didn't get to see them on the last tour, but I was at night 1 of the DVD shoot, and I actually appear at the very end of the show while they're bowing, so that's kind of cool in a nerdy way I guess.

Meanwhile, the new Blackfield is fantastic.

On the last tour ProjeKCt 5 opened the show, which was Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew playing V-Drums.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

I'm looking forward to the new album "Fear Of A Blank Planet" as well.

The tracklist is quite short though. I wish they had at least 8 songs in it.

PS: Nice shirt John.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

So today is release date. . .and NOBODY seems to have the 2-disc CD/DVD edition available.

Anyone been able to find it?

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

OK, I take that back. . .Amazon has two listings for it -- one says "unavailable," and the other says "ships in 4-6 weeks." Ugh.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

I pre-ordered the LE on Amazon and then saw the 4-6 week wait. I found it at Newbury Comics on the way home tonight and cancelled my Amazon order. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet but I'm looking forward to it.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

This is killing me...

I called the local BB this week to ask if they were going to receive any copies of the new PT CD. After I repeated the name several times, I was told that they were not, so I ordered it from Amazon. It shipped yesterday, but I went to the store today because...it's Tuesday and, lo and behold, there were two copies on the shelf. I wish people there knew what a "New Release" schedule was. Hopefully, it arrives soon. I want my CD.

In the meantime, I'll listen to Blackfield II.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

I ordered the cd from Amazon. The dvd-audio will be released in September (supposedly), so I'll wait for that if I like the cd. So far from the clips I've heard, I'm not nearly excited for this release like I was the last two.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

So the Limited Edition includes a regular DVD, and the DVD-A isn't out for a few months? I thought the LE had the DVD-A in it.

Anyone spot the LE at any of the electronics chains?

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

The limited edition is a dvd-video disc with a high resolution stereo track in the video area of the disc (I believe it will be 24/96). I think it also has a dts or dolby digital 5.1 mix, but is not a dvd-audio disc. It comes in a special box with a book and the cd version inside. The dvd-audio edition is scheduled for September from what I've heard. If you look at the band's online store, they did the same thing with "Deadwing". I waited and bought the dvd-audio when it came out. If you don't have a dvd-audio player, then I would go with the limited edition dvd-video, if you can find it.

Here is what the band's online store says about the "Deadwing" special edition

Quote:
The special edition comes in a 72 page hardback book package, and includes both the CD stereo version and DVD-V* 5.1 surround sound version (but without any of the bonus material or features included on the separately released DTS DVD-A edition).

* A DVD-V only contains the normal res 5.1 layer that can be played on any DVD player, not the higher res DVD-A layer that is for dedicated DVD-A players.

Re: New Porcupine Tree album discussion

I got my Ltd. Ed. from Amazon, but I ordered in on March 24th. I remember it showing as unavailble not too long after that.

On another note, I bought the regular edition before my LE showed up, and I found the level to be quite a bit lower than that of Deadwing or In Absentia. Anyone else notice this?

I'm having a hard time isolating the vocals in the FoaBP mix but that may be me and not the CD. I had a similar problem with the last Tool album. The vocals didn't stand out enough for my taste.

The place I ordered from cut off preorders for it last week, so it is definitely a limited edition. Just got my regular edition today, so I still need to listen to it.
