Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD? - Page 2

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

DVD-A and SACD are dead. I don't see the point in including those.

The internet offering is an oddball but not a deal breaker. Personally I like the idea of my movie player NOT BEING connected to the internet.

I would predict Marantz is going with them. They always follow Denon but usually a year later.

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

That doesn't make much sense to me. Hmm...if I decide I want to go to the trouble to see some web content, I first have to go to my PC, download the content to an SD card and then put it in the machine.

Find it strange Denon have sat in the wings this past year not even clearly confirming a preferred HD format and then come out with a $2k 1.1 ( as opposed to 2.0 ) profile non Dvd-A or Sacd or Internet offering (tho pretty good looking ) player like this

I agree and, especially after anxiously waiting to see what the company would do on the high def front for many months, am disappointed in Denon. In addition to being impractical and silly, the SD card issue is not competitive with what we're hoping to see from other BD player manufacturers this fall after the BD-J compliance deadline. Premium video processing is of course wonderful, but that should be in addition to, not in lieu of, more basic functionality offered by less expensive players.

DVD-A and SACD are dead. I don't see the point in including those.

Respectfully, Shane, not only do I disagree but I'm getting tired of seeing these kinds statements about high resolution audio that are factually not true. There are boutique jazz and classical labels--patronized by those who buy $2,000 DVD players--still releasing DVD-A and SACD. There is of course the Genesis catalog being released on SACD.

Even if both formats were "dead" (and what exactly does that mean--few/no new releases but a not insignificant installed base of players . . . kinda like vinyl?), there are still plenty of guys like me who have significant high rez libraries that they'd like to be able to play on the same machine they're playing their high def movies on. Denon has supported SACD and DVD-A with fine, recent players such as the 2910 and they should continue that support in their high def machines.

I found Stinziano's high def format bet hedging interesting:

"Denon remains committed to offering our customers the most options in ultimate-quality home entertainment products and to this end, our future plans do not preclude the introduction of high-definition products in other formats."

Certainly sounds like they're leaving the door open to support HD DVD.

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

It is VERY elegant looking for sure but 2K is quite a bit of change. Still, it's a Denon.

If it was $1000, hell yea, id bite. I will be happy with my $500 Sony 300 for now, even if it has some quirks.

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

Is it true that this player will only be profile 1.1?

I don't think I'd want to drop 2k on a player that wasn't fully up to 2.0 spec. Imho, if this player can't be updated to profile 2.0 via firmware upgrade, then Denon should push it back a few months. Also, where's the ethernet port?

I really was stoked when I heard Denon would be taking a dive in the HD arena, as I really expected this to be the best HD player (spec wise) on the market, but it seems kind of anti-climatic. Since Denon is known for their audiophile sensibilities, DVD-A/SACD support would've also been nice at this pricepoint.

The press release said that Denon would be open to other HD possibilities, I sure hope they make a Universal player with specs for both sides fully maximized. It will be interesting to see how the forthcoming Onkyo/Integra compares to the Denon spec-wise when it arrives this Fall.

I do agree with Tim though, it's gorgeous with it's brushed aluminum plate. It almost reminds me of my old 2900 - - -before the Toshiba HD-A2 and Oppo 970HD replaced it in my rig.

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

Hi,

We are looking for a blu ray player for our screening room. The Denon DVD-5000 Player we have been using stopped playing DVDs after 12 years of use. BTW it still plays CDs! So the boss wants to go Denon again. Has anyone heard if this player will output 24p? We use a JVC HD2K projector for now, but since we do 95% of our work in 24p, weather its film of Digital Cinematography, we want to stay as native as possible. So the JVC might get switched out at some point too. I think we'll wait for the next generation 24p JVC though.

Thanks for any info.

Regards,
Dave

I agree that HD DVD doesn't have something of the caliber of Pioneer or Denon in the near future, but for mass market appeal, that these formats will require if they are to survive, Denon and Pioneer Elite have little to offer.

I am a self proclaimed Pinoeer Elite elitist, by the way, and when the 3rd gen Elite gets released, I will upgrade my Panasonic BD player.

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

I am seriously looking at replacing my current Yamaha RX-V995 with a new Denon receiver. And am very tempted to save the money for a Denon Blu-ray player. The Denon would replace my current Sony BDP-S300 and I am very excited that Denon decided to go Blu-ray!

I would put Onkyo on the same level as Denon (as well as it's Integra brethren), but that's just my opinion.

LU: Why did Denon go with Blu-ray rather than HD DVD?

JT: We decided to go Blu-ray because we found a partner that we can work with at this point in time quicker than we could to do HD DVD. We're not picking one format over the other — we want to make that very clear. We happen to have a partner that we've worked with for years, and they wanted to work with us first, and so it just was like a nice marriage. [b]The door is wide open for HD DVD[b], and as many have said, the market's going to tell us where we need to go. In our particular instance, our goal is to have a true universal audio/video player. All audio formats, including SACD and DVD-Audio, as well as HD DVD and Blu-ray video.

LU: So you would consider doing a combo player with Blu-ray and HD DVD?

JT: That's probably our number one consideration at this point in time. They're just starting to come out from some of the major players — obviously, Samsung has introduced theirs. They'll be out this fall, while the LG player, you know, it's not a true HD DVD player — it's not a licensed HD DVD product. LG has to make their own logo, it doesn't display menus for movies, and all this other stuff. So Samsung's going to be the first true combo player. And hats off to them.

Thx for posting those Talmadge interview bits, Derek. Exactly what I was thinking of doing myself.

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

I can not wait to see the Denon DVD-2500BTCI Bluray/DVD player. I was going to get the Pioneer Elite BDP-95FD because of budget restrictions. But if i like what I see I will have to get the Denon DVD-2500BTCI to go with my future Denon AVR-3808ci receiver.

My home theater now:
Yamaha RX-V995 5.1 Receiver
Denon DVD-2200 DVD/DVD-A/SACD Player
Sony BDP-S300 Bluray/DVD Player
Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD/DVD Player
Denon DCD-1290 CD Player
Denon DTR-2000 DAT Recorder
Sony DVP-S9000ES CD/SACD/DVD Player
Sony KDF-F50A10 50" 720p HDTV

My home theater updated:
Denon AVR-3808ci 7.1 Receiver
Denon DVD-2200 DVD/DVD-A/SACD Player
Denon DVD-2500BTCI Bluray/DVD Transport
Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD/DVD Player
Denon DCD-1290 CD Player
Denon DTR-2000 DAT Recorder
Sony DVP-S9000ES CD/SACD/DVD Player
Sony KDS-R60XBR5 60" 1080p HDTV

And if Denon ends up making a HD-DVD player I might just have to get that as well.

I take it back.... provisionally. The new Onkyo player is looking more and more like a crippled rebadge of the Toshiba XA2, who IMO is most certainly not in the same league, or plane of reality for that matter, as Denon... Onkyo can still redeem themselves if their first player is completely bug-free. Me, I'm back in wait-and-see mode: We will see what is announced at CES. Phase I is to replace my A1 (can't wait for correct BM!), followed by Phase II: a BR player - the current Panny has no on-board decoding, which I need. Finally is a 5.1 analog switch to handle the audio...

To my knowledge Denon is coming out with two Blu-ray players. There is the Denon DVD-3800BDCI for $2k and the Denon DVD-2500BT which is supposed to be a transport for aprox. $1,200. Both models are said to have HDMI 1.3 and will decode and bitstream both Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. I am still considering a Pioneer Elite BPD-95FD but am leaning towards a Denon Bluray because I want it to match the Denon AVR-3808ci receiver I am also favoring at this time.

Re: Denon - Blu-Ray or HD DVD?

The way it's looking right now, I may end up waiting for the Universal player Talmadge is talking about.... I've waited this long and, like a true HT geek, my BR library is growing, player or not...

Strike the 'provisionally'. The Onkyo is literally nothing more than an XA2 with an Onkyo faceplate on it. To wit, the remote is of extremely poor quality, and does not even support all of the functionality the XA2 sports (like the Reon menu). And they charge more for it.... go figure. I used to think of Onkyo as a 2nd tier CE... but now they join Toshiba on the 3rd tier (I guess they have been in bed together for quite a while... some of Onkyo's earliest DVD players were also rebadged Toshibas). Bring on the Denon dual!
