360 as Media Extender?

Is anyone here using the 360 as a media extender from their networked PC? I was just hoping to get some real life, candid experiences with use from the users here. I can read online reviews all day, but opinions from forum users are often better.

I've set it up but haven't done anything with it yet. There's no cost to do it, so why not just set it up and see if you like it?

My 360/DLP is a mile away from my computer. I need to buy a wireless router before I can try it.

No prob, I use my 360 as a media extender. The best route would be to use a computer with windows media center, the only catch there is that you have to convert all your movies over to a format that it can work with (I believe wmv).

What I use is a program called tversity which supports realtime conversion, that is, it'll convert the movie on the fly into something that the xbox can read without prior hassle. It's free and it works well, it's not as convenient though since you won't have the nice front end that you'd get with media center.

Thanks Tekara. I didn't know that about the format requirement for video files. I'll check out that conversion program.

Re: 360 as Media Extender?

i actually just setup my xbox as an extender tonight. everything was pretty easy, but my network in completely wireless and the xbox is in the back of the house. so i'm going to have to buy a wireless-g booster. does anyone know of a good inexpensive booster? thanks.

I would first look into using a better antenna instead of a booster. Either on the router or on what your using to connect the 360. It'll be cheaper and helps keep things simpler.

Re: 360 as Media Extender?

fab-corp is still one of my preferred places, I would recommends looking into one of their mobile antennas. Make sure you double check the antenna connection of your devices to ensure that the antenna will work with it.
