I'm really looking forward to listening to this. I heard another radio interview with Brownstein and it was very interesting and fun to listen to.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

This is going to be a great interview, and for those of you planning on calling in.....Paul doesn't shy away from speaking his mind. The first time I met Paul was at the very first TV-DVD conference. Paul was sitting beside me on a panel, and someone from Sony was on the other side of me. Part way through the panel Paul started attacking the Sony guy for the poor treatment of classic TV shows, and I was caught in the middle. I would have loved to see the look on my face. The next year Paul attacked Paramount for their poor treatment of classic TV shows, and now he works on a ton of classic CBS shows distributed by Paramount. He's a wonderful guy, and I'll be tuning in to hear what he has to say later today.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

Brownstein says he's trying to find a home for CPO SHARKEY. I never thought that would come out. Good interview. Also working on putting together a Perry Mason 50th anniversary set with bonus features TBD.

Unfortunately it sounds like BILKO is dead as far as future releases go.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

It was an awsome interview! Sad to hear that the Bilko set bombed. At least I bought it.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

He answered my questions regarding the lack of classic TV releases from Fox (Warners is more-or-less blocking the Adam West series as not to interfere with the Batman films and TV shows they own, Dobie Gillis has rights issues with the Max Shulman estate, and yes, demographics are a big deciding factor in the release of certain shows on DVD), and I'm so happy that soon we will see The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour- but I do wonder if the Beatles' music clips will be included, provided that clearance from Apple is done. All in all a great conversation, and I'm looking forward to the Perry Mason 50th Anniversary set!

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

Brownstein also said that the hold-up on Dobie Gillis was due to the Max Schulman estate wanting big bucks. It's nice to know a release of Dobie at least is/was being discussed. Dwayne Hickman will probably discuss this when he's on the shokus radio show two weeks from today.

My dial-up was going in and out, did Brownstein mention any other new projects besides Best Of Tom Jones and 50th Anniversary of Perry Mason?
I wonder how a special anniversary edition of Mason effects the regular half season releases?

I sure hope it doesn't and that it is integrated in with the complete season releases. One positive sign is that the Wild Wild West collection was both a 40th anniversary collection and a complete S1 set. I wish the Mason mention could have happened before the last minute of the show; I would have called in and attempted to expand on this.

Regarding BILKO, I missed the first part of the show when he initially discussed it. Did any discussion about its failure revolve around its being a "best of" as opposed to being a complete season? Or was this simply a case of the current generation of buyers not having any clue who Phil Silvers was? Some of the show's discussion was devoted to the difficulty in marketing older properties that many buyers simply aren't familiar with or can't relate to. I find it sad that Paul feels many of Gleason's greatest characters aren't marketable anymore because society can't deal with the drinking/smoking aspects. He is probably right, but as a non drinker and a non smoker I find classic Gleason hilarious. Certainly much more so than some of the roles he was reduced to playing in later life.

Charles - your call was a highlight! You had great questions/comments and got some interesting and relevant information. As you said, he confirmed the rumors that DC/Warner essentially thinks the TV show is too lowbrow (my words, not his) compared to their other Batman properties.

That's too bad - someone should really ask about this in the upcoming Warner chat. (This is something they've flat out denied in the past.) I wonder how Warner would feel when season sets of the 60s Batman outsells every other Batman product on the shelves.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

Charles Ellis and Bob Gu, thank you for the update on "Dobie Gillis". I hope something can be worked out with the Max Schulman estate. I really would like to see this classic sitcom out on DVD.

Do they archive their shows? I'll have to remember to catch Dwayne Hickman when he's on.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

True, true, Sam: no matter how good the dramatic Warner Batmans are in various forms (live action and animated), in the hearts of millions Batman will always mean Adam West! Warners might as well give in and take their share of the huge profits season sets of the 1966-68 series will generate on DVD. Warner Bros. is being hypocritical as they put out all of the George Reeves TV show on disc while putting out a new feature film simultaneously! They're shooting themselves in the foot over Batman, and we're all the poorer for it.

I wish someone could do a study (as if the Reeves/Superman release wasn't a study in itself) to show Warners how releasing this would actually generate increased sales of all Batman merchandise. I know from the bottom of my heart that this series would drive up interest in all things Batman. Reason: It's not too dense for little kids (they get it) and yet it keeps adults interested. Further, huge nostalgia benefit here and all this brings more fans in to the fold.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

I thought Brownstein's Batman comment was that he had said Warners didn't want the Adam West Batman to dilute the earnings of Warner's Batman properties. I took that to mean Warner's does not want another company to make money from Batman. (Although they didn't or could not stop Sony/Columbia from releasing both Batman serials.) Warners bought back the Superman serials from Columbia. Why can't they just buy out Fox and Greenway, make a deal with Classic Media and but out both Batman and The Green Hornet? Easier said then done, I suppose.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

Brownstein did say "dilute" which I suppose is open to interpretation. As was pointed out in the show, they've already released the animation and theatrical versions so it doesn't make sense that they're worried about losing sales. I took it as meaning diluting the value of the franchise which essentially is a slam against the series.

In either case, the upcoming Warner chat is not the place to ask about this. The chat is with the theatrical division which is run by different people who appear to have an entirely different mindset when it comes to releasing classic material.

Back to CPO Sharkey, assuming Brownstein can pull this off he said he's already got agreement from Rickles to do commentaries. (Maybe he'll stick around for more than half an episode on this set.) It would be great if he could convince the Carson people to license out the full, unedited version of the classic Carson "invasion" of the CPO Sharkey set to confront Rickles about a broken cigarette case. A badly edited version is part of a Carson DVD compilation.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

I was just over at shokusradio.com looking at their schedule and it appears that the Paul Brownstein interview is being rebroadcast every night 7-9PM EST(except Sunday when it's rerun earlier 1-3PM EST) until next Wed. when Pat Harrington will be interviewed live.

Did anybody download that Live 365 Player? I used Real Player and it was breaking up. Or is it just because I am on dial-up? Would Live 365 help?

I hadn't realized the chat was not with the TV folks. I agree - not the place to ask about the Adam West Batman. Warner's theatrical division has been doing some of the best work out there for years now.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

While I am not a fan of Dobie Gillis. I find it ridiculous and greedy of the Schulman estate to be holding this up. Not that they aren't entitled to something. But, something is better than nothing. And its not like Dobie Gillis will be a monster seller. Where the studio will have tons of profit.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

I agree. I don't understand the mindset of the Max Shulman estate. There really shouldn't be any kind of hold-up for "Dobie". The most frustrating thing for me as a fan of this series is that this hasn't been airing regularly since Nick at Nite, besides that one airing on TV Land when they celebrated 20 years of Nick-at-Nite programming, this was the last time I saw this series.

I think it will sell pretty well especially with Bob Denver in this.

I picked up about 30 episodes of the show when it made the rounds on various small cable networks (AIN, WHT) in the late 90's. They were supplied by Pacific Family Entertainment (low-end 16mm transfers to 3/4" tape). I'm not sure what the copyright status was of these episodes, but I have a strong hunch that Fox didn't sub-license them to PFE.

That didn't hurt the release of The Best of Match Game. Paul can't seriously believe that's an issue. Society can no longer deal with smoking in public buildings or drinking alchoholic beverages in the workplace, but there are exceptions. There are sadly still a lot of people that do both. I never had any respect for drunks and I can't stand smokers -- it's a filthy and disgusting habit. Yet I don't mind watching them do either on TV. Modern television will surprise you sometimes. Saturday Night Live Weekend Update co-anchor Amy Poehler is usually seen lighting up a cigarette and taking a puff at the end of each fake newscast.

The first 9 Honeymooners-themed episodes of The Jackie Gleason Show were put out on DVD last year. The only issue with those is that the comedy is diluted with overproduced (and severely dated) musical numbers. How were sales on that set by the way? I'd really like to collect the remaining 3 years+ of that series.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

Well, I hate hearing there's a monkey wrench in the prospects of a "Dobie Gillis" dvd release. I know Fox seems rather loathe to venture into old b&w shows, but I always thought "Dobie" might be one they'd be willing to chance. It's been quite a while since I saw it on, and I've been tempted to dig out some old tapes I have, from its CBN airings (over 20 years ago! yipe!).

Just a reminder that Dwayne Hickman, as well as his wife, Joan Roberts Hickman, will be on Stu's Show next Wednesday.

For material/extras that came in too late for the dvd, or things that couldn't be cleared for dvd like the Don Adams for White Castle... could they be put online at a website (in dvd quality)? Is the Web considered a different medium for clearing?

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

If Warner has kept the Batman TV show off DVD, how come Fox was able to release the 1966 Movie?

What do you mean, Will? The Don Adams White Castle ad spots are on the Get Smart series set.

Re: Paul Browstein on Internet Radio tomorrow

I'll be listening to Dwayne Hickman's interview in a couple hours, but did anyone catch it live last night?

Dwayne said he hadn’t heard what was going on the hold-up on "Dobie Gillis" on DVD, lol.

Stu said that the series is ready to go (it was remastered and cleaned up) and all they have to do is digitally transfer it to DVD. As said above, the Max Shulman estate is asking huge amount of money, and sadly, both Fox and the estate can’t come to an agreement. Dwayne also said he's hoping to see "Dobie" on DVD.

Right now they're talking about the "Dobie Gillis" pilot... oh and great intro to Stu's show, the full "Dobie Gillis" theme! So far, I'm really enjoying this interview.

Well, it's been three years since the last post here.  I gather that Fox was never able to reach an understanding with the Max Schulman estate.  That's a tragedy, as DOBIE GILLIS is my all-time favorite comedy series.  I would love to purchase the entire series on commercial DVD.
